partnered with <a href="https://commonpurpose.org/">Common Purpose</a> and <a href="https://canie.org/">Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE)</a> to deliver a Greener Global Futures workshop to recent alumni from the U21 <a href="https://universitas21.com/globalcitizens">Global Citizens</a> and <a href="https://universitas21.com/node/1521">Sustainable Micro Internship</a> programmes. The two-hour Greener Global Futures workshop asked students to explore how to balance valuable international learning opportunities with a commitment to sustainability. Almost 100 students from across U21’s global network participated from more than 21 countries and 19 time zones.</p> <p>During these interactive online workshops, U21 and <a href="https://commonpurpose.org/">Common Purpose</a> were delighted to be joined by guest speaker <a href="https://canie.org/about-canie/emily-merson">Emily Merson</a>, Global Board Member of <a href="https://canie.org/">CANIE</a> and Executive Director AIFS Abroad.  CANIE is a grassroots movement formed by international education practitioners from around the world who see the need for the international education sector to step up and act on climate change.</p> <p>Emily outlined why sustainability is a challenge for global universities and the role students can play in shaping greener global education. Key sustainability barriers identified included a lack of low carbon options for student travel; the impact of study abroad programmes on carbon emissions; and low confidence among staff and students in respect of embedding greener global practices.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-style-text-long is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>International education is a force for good in the world, but it carries a carbon cost that neither we nor our students can ignore. We know that climate anxiety is increasing among staff and students<a href="https://www.universitas21.com/news-and-events/news/exploring-student-mobility-and-reducing-ecological-impact-u21-greener-global#_ftn1">[1]</a>. We also know we can mitigate this anxiety by taking action and contributing to collective climate action. U21’s Green Global Futures Workshops provide an opportunity for students to reduce their climate anxiety as they contribute their experience and ideas to develop innovative solutions to reducing the carbon emissions associated with learning abroad.</p> <cite><strong>Ainslie Moore, President of CANIE</strong></cite></blockquote> <p>Despite the identified challenges to greener global education and mobility, the overarching message that Emily shared was a hopeful one. Here, she encouraged students to use their collective voice to amplify actions that their universities could take forward to address climate change. Additionally, Emily encouraged students to ask their university to become a signatory of <a href="https://canie.org/the-canie-accord">the CANIE Accord</a>, a set of principles and commitments providing a roadmap for institutions seeking to embed climate action.</p> <p>Following the CANIE presentation, students were placed in breakout groups to discuss key questions such as ‘What would you like universities to do to drive greener global student mobility?’ The outcomes of these conversations were illuminating with students putting forward excellent ideas including travel solutions, recycling, education and improving campuses through reducing plastic, water, food, pollution and energy waste. Additionally, students raised key areas of improvement such as the need for universities to provide more sustainable menstruation sanitary care items.  </p> <p>A key stand out in discussions was the number of comments relating specifically to supporting greener global mobility at a local level within the university setting. Ideas included the use of electronic bikes, discounted student travel passes, carpooling, walking and using public transportation where available. Another idea frequently raised was the importance of universities offering online teaching provision and learning resources to reduce travel emissions and cut down on paper waste.</p> <p>Discussion highlighted universities’ role in the need to be transparent with students about the impacts of international travel and to provide more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Examples included encouraging train travel instead of flying, facilitating international online learning opportunities and creating local experiences for international students during semester breaks, thus avoiding travelling home and back in that period.</p> <p>Another thread that came up throughout the sessions was the civic duty of universities in educating and raising awareness on climate matters. Students argued that universities should lead by example through maintaining greener campuses, using sustainable fuels and providing energy efficient lighting, heating and student housing options. Likewise, it was suggested that universities could do more to promote environmentally friendly lifestyle choices for home and international students. Here, both international and exchange students considered that they would benefit, at the point of application for entry or from guidance on how to live sustainably while studying at university. This could include information on local vegan restaurants, clothes and furniture swaps, and local sustainable travel options to help make an informed decision about the most eco-friendly places in which to study.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-style-text-long is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>I would like the university to include a ‘sustainability rating’ for each global exchange program offered to help students make informed decisions.
