These structures have spectacular heights, from 54 meters (wooden Church of Surdesti), up to 71 meters (Church of Barsana), being the tallest wooden buildings in the world. The oak structures make themselves noticed through their planimetry, the joining techniques for the pieces of wood, as well as through the varied types of roofs and their ingenious vertical division (base building, framed roof and towers in which are installed the bells, whose domes are continued with an iron cross). The model for the estimation of the missing rings of Scots pine was used in Lithuania for the first time. We have assessed 18 timber cross-sections from nine churches, which were used for the constructions from the second half of the 17th to 19th c. The oldest wood samples were dated from St. Michael’s Church in Vilnius (1668±4) and St. George, the Martyr, (Bernardine) Church in Kaunas (1693±3). Given the high level of safety characterising Baroque roof structures, a relatively significant number of these survive in Transylvania, though there is no through inventory, yet. The lecture presents the typology of Transylvanian Baroque roof structures, the PhD research programme carried out in order to analyse these structures, and through two case studies the level of safety, durability and the unique character of these structures. Though professional interest has increased towards historic (roof) structures, Baroque roofs in Transylvania face a double threat. Based on the design of the brickwork feature and the significant amount of corrupted roof tiles found in and around it, the structure must have functioned as a roof tile kiln. The best analogies for these roof tiles are found primarily in France (e.g., in Pontigny, Vermenton and Auxerre) and in Egres (Igriș, present-day Romania).
