While there is some support in ancient sources for the withdrawal of soldiers from Britain in the late fourth and early fifth centuries, archaeological evidence also suggests activity at many Roman military sites in the fifth century. A review of the military history as suggested by Roman sources, as well as a consideration of the organisation of both the late Roman military and fourth-century Britain, promotes a regional approach to interpreting military archaeology and history in the final years of Roman Britain, with particular emphasis on the distinct military commands in the diocese.</p><div Bennett</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Anatolica, 2011</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Knowing the recruitment patterns and the areas of service for the auxilia, the auxiliary units of the Roman Imperial Army, helps us better understand overall developments in Roman strategic thinking. In this regard the establishment of auxiliary units from the provinces of Asia Minor is of interest in pointing to Roman military thought and practice with regard to the Eastern provinces as a whole. This paper examines the history of those auxiliary units raised from Asia Minor in the light of these matters.
