Among the new VP8 features is the ability to encode video at multiple resolutions at the same time and a 10.5 percent speed boost at decoding video, both of which enhance its use in streaming applications.</p> <p>Shankland notes that the MPEG consortium is not standing still either, development of h.265 aka <a href="http://hevc.info/">HEVC</a> is also well advanced, with spec deadlined for Jun 2012. He is also the author of the critically-acclaimed <a href="http://www.smallpieces.com/index.php">Small Pieces Loosely Joined: A Unified Theory of the Web and Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder</a>.</p> <p>David is currently a senior researcher at Harvard Law’s <a href="http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/">Berkman Center for the Internet & Society</a>, Co-Director of the <a href="http://librarylab.law.harvard.edu/">Harvard Library Innovation Lab</a> at Harvard Law School, and is a <a href="http://careers.state.gov/ff">Franklin Fellow</a> at the United States State Department. Paying a portion of their income in exchange for exclusion of future competition may be looked at as a good bargain, without negative P.R. normally associated with explicit attempts to cartelize.</p>
