However, the Tarot cards have changed in form and function since their first appearance during the early Renaissance. 1 For at least five centuries, the Tarot has tenaciously survived the condemnation of church, the persecution of state and the ridicule of academia. 2 Whereas, most contemporary literature on Tarot, aims to interpret the occult significance of each card placing exclusive emphasis on the divinatory meanings, this research does not follow the standard pattern, for it is fundamentally ethnographic in its assumption. 3 This dissertation aims to research the form, symbolic artistic imagery (iconography), and related meanings (iconology), of the Rider-Waite-Smith 4 deck of Tarot cards, which have remained relatively similar to previous decks with some alterations throughout five-hundred years, until the late-twentieth century with the proliferation of New-Age decks. Art historians focus on the artistic significance of the cards within the context of the specific period and cultural milieu they were created in, scholars of western esotericism focus on occult significances and historians of games focus on the decks&#39; multifaceted history. 5 The goal of this study, which is interdisciplinary in its essence, considering its association to Art History and Material Folk Culture, is to decipher the underlying meaning of the symbols, iconography and iconology according to Art History theories and the Jungian Psychological School of Thought utilized in Folklore. Therefore, the focus of this research is on the cards from the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck, considered one of the last classic Tarot decks, by deciphering its artistic and symbolic meanings, all the while relating to older classical Tarot decks, since they are founded on adaptations of and inspirations from, the decks that came before. 6 In the Confucian sense, Tarot provides the advantage of the thousand words each picture is worth, being easily adaptable because it is inherently neutral and doctrinally foundationless. It carries no particular allegiance to any system of belief, which postulates an exclusive claim on truth or reality. 7</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Deck A Study in Icon \u0026 Iconography \u0026 Iconology According to Art History Theories and Jungian Archetypes&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:69711725,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/52457330/The_Rider_Waite_Smith_Tarot_Deck_A_Study_in_Icon_and_Iconography_and_Iconology_According_to_Art_History_Theories_and_Jungian_Archetypes&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/52457330/The_Rider_Waite_Smith_Tarot_Deck_A_Study_in_Icon_and_Iconography_and_Iconology_According_to_Art_History_Theories_and_Jungian_Archetypes"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="36361347" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/36361347/The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot">The Pictorial Key to the Tarot</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="80343570" href="https://independent.academia.edu/AlejandraCajade">Alejandra Cajade</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Pictorial Key to the Tarot&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:56270531,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/36361347/The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/36361347/The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="36350518" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/36350518/An_Introduction_to_the_Study_of_the_Tarot">An Introduction to the Study of the Tarot</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="80243134" href="https://independent.academia.edu/MagicHand">Magic Hand</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;An Introduction to the Study of the Tarot&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:56259263,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/36350518/An_Introduction_to_the_Study_of_the_Tarot&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/36350518/An_Introduction_to_the_Study_of_the_Tarot"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="44668212" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/44668212/Arthur_Edward_Waite_The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot">Arthur Edward Waite - The present work is designed more especially--as I have intimated--to introduce a rectified set of the cards themselves and to tell the unadorned truth concerning them, so far as this is possible in the outer circles. As regards the sequence of greater symbols, their ultimate and highest meaning lies deeper than the common language of picture or hieroglyph. This will be understood by those who have received some part of the Secret Tradition. As regards the verbal meanings allocated here to the more important Trump Cards, they are designed to set aside the follies and impostures of past attributions, to put those who have the gift of insight on the right track, and to take care, within the limits of my possibilities, that they are the truth so far as they go.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Arthur Edward Waite - The Pictorial Key to the Tarot&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:65141230,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/44668212/Arthur_Edward_Waite_The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/44668212/Arthur_Edward_Waite_The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="4923488" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/4923488/The_visual_semiotics_of_Tarot_images_a_sociocultural_perspective">The visual semiotics of Tarot images: a sociocultural perspective</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="332238" href="https://columbia.academia.edu/InnaSemetsky">Inna Semetsky</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This chapter addresses the visual semiotics of a specific medium represented by Tarot images and investigates their communicative and signifying potential. The chapter argues that Tarot is not just a cultural game but a system of signs grounded in a complementary relation between word and image. Using such sources as Carl Jung&#39;s archetypal psychology, Charles Sanders Peirce&#39;s triadic semiotics and Yuri Lotman&#39;s approach to cultural memory, this chapter demonstrates that the meanings implicit in the Tarot pictures accord with the unorthodox grammar of the symbolic language of the collective unconscious. Importantly, the chapter considers the implications of Tarot pictorial semiotics at the level of present-day social reality and specifically focuses on three images of the Major Arcana, namely: the Devil, the Tower, and the Star. The chapter concludes by presenting an impending Fifth Age of Understanding wherein the integration of visual communication takes place leading to humankind&#39;s intelligent and ethical actions.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The visual semiotics of Tarot images: a sociocultural perspective&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:33785488,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/4923488/The_visual_semiotics_of_Tarot_images_a_sociocultural_perspective&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/4923488/The_visual_semiotics_of_Tarot_images_a_sociocultural_perspective"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="715515" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/715515/Stars_and_Cards_Time_Cycles_and_the_Tarot_Part_III">Stars and Cards: Time Cycles and the Tarot, Part III</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="392597" href="https://independent.academia.edu/ElizabethHazel">Elizabeth Hazel</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In Part III, the role of the Abstract Expressions and their mystical and psychological artistic philosophies and their influence on mid-twentieth century tarot developments are explored.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Stars and Cards: Time Cycles and the Tarot, Part III&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:4061982,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;doc&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/715515/Stars_and_Cards_Time_Cycles_and_the_Tarot_Part_III&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/715515/Stars_and_Cards_Time_Cycles_and_the_Tarot_Part_III"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="4331903" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/4331903/The_Phenomenology_of_Tarot_or_The_Further_Adventures_of_a_Postmodern_Fool">The Phenomenology of Tarot, or: The Further Adventures of a Postmodern Fool</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="332238" href="https://columbia.academia.edu/InnaSemetsky">Inna Semetsky</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The early draft of this paper has been orally presented at the Australasian Society for Continental Philosophy (ASCP) Annual Conference 2004 “Critique Today”, sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion, Division of SCMP, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, 8-10 December, 2004, session 17 “Phenomenology, Semiotics, Ethics”. Thanks are due to Melissa McMahon for her insightful comments and suggestions at the session. This paper is a sequel to my earlier Roberta Kevelson Memorial Award-winning essay entitled &quot; The adventures of a postmodern Fool, or the semiotics of learning&quot; (in C. W. Spinks (ed.). Trickster and Ambivalence: The Dance of Differentiation, Atwood Publishing, MA, 2001, pp. 57-70) which analysed the phenomenon of Tarot readings in terms of Deleuze&#39;s method of transcendental empiricism and traced the Fool’s adventures as an experiential learning process. The present paper will not only address the implications of this philosophical method, that Deleuze has called both wild and powerful, but will also track continental thinking back to its phenomenological origins and Husserl&#39;s concepts of noemata and noesis. I will suggest that a singular reading creates a semiotic bridge that connects these two seemingly disparate “realms”. The tentative conclusion of the paper is that the interpretation of Tarot images provides a practical means for determining the meaning and content of mental representations thus addressing (albeit not solving) one of the problems of primary significance (namely: the theory of content determination) in contemporary cognitive science.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Phenomenology of Tarot, or: The Further Adventures of a Postmodern Fool&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:31783799,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/4331903/The_Phenomenology_of_Tarot_or_The_Further_Adventures_of_a_Postmodern_Fool&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/4331903/The_Phenomenology_of_Tarot_or_The_Further_Adventures_of_a_Postmodern_Fool"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="2382005" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/2382005/The_Edusemiotics_of_Images_Essays_on_the_Art_Science_of_Tarot">The Edusemiotics of Images: Essays on the Art~Science of Tarot</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="332238" href="https://columbia.academia.edu/InnaSemetsky">Inna Semetsky</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">published in the series &quot;Educational future: Rethinking theory and practice&quot; by Sense Publishers, Rotterdam (now Brill Publishers)., 2013</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">&quot;Semetsky&#39;s new book offers a bracing account of Tarot semiotics in view of its deep significance for educational experience. Peirce and Spencer-Brown), 2001</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">From a semiotic viewpoint, Tarot has been described as a mere artifact with pictorial cards being signifiers in a symbolic sense. This paper reconceptualizes the process-structure of Tarot by placing it in a three-fold framework that merges semiotics with systems-theoretical and cybernetic perspectives. Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic logic embedded in the action of signs, or semiosis in mind and nature, serves as a point of departure. By addressing Tarot from the position of general systems theory it is possible to describe Tarot dynamics by means of a sort of indexical connection to its signified. The latter, albeit functioning in a symbolic sense as an archetypal field of Jungian collective unconscious, is nevertheless capable of producing real effects at the level of human emotions, cognitions and habitual behaviors. The interpretation of symbols as the Peircean category of Thirdness creates, by virtue of mediation, a feedback loop, that is it generates conditions of possibility for self-organization. The previously unconscious, that is as yet out of conscious awareness, contents of one’s mind become available to human knowing. The process of reading and interpretation contributes to, in a pragmatic sense, the creation of meanings for mental representations, the former inferred from the symbolism embedded in Tarot pictures. As such, Tarot as a self-organized system has the potential to provide epistemic access to the Peircean virtual Real, affirming, in a way, some contemporary debates of cognitive science.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Signs In Action: Tarot As a Self-Organized System&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:64106987,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/442954/Signs_In_Action_Tarot_As_a_Self_Organized_System&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/442954/Signs_In_Action_Tarot_As_a_Self_Organized_System"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:6765745,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:6765745,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_6765745" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
