tissues. The specific detection of the pyrethroid insecticide is currently obtained after extraction followed by chemical analysis by chromatography techniques. However visualizing the insecticide molecule within the wood structure requires specific probes together with microscopy techniques. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to apply a new methodology based on antibody-antigen recognition and electronic microscopy to visualize directly pyrethroids in the wood material. A polyclonal antibody directed against cypermethrin was developed and implement it on Pinus sylvestris wood samples coated with technical cypermethrin. The antibody was tested on impregnated wood and the specific recognition of the insecticide was visualized in transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The immunogold-TEM assay evidenced the capacity of the synthetic biocide to penetrate in the wood. The depth of penetration was measured on sections taken at increasing distances from the coated surface of the wood. Such results correlated with chemical analyzes carried out by GC-ECD after extraction. In addition, the immuno-TEM investigation allowed visualizing, for the first time at the ultrastructure scale of resolution, that cypermethrin was able to diffuse within the secondary wood cell walls. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cypermethrin" title="cypermethrin">cypermethrin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=insecticide" title=" insecticide"> insecticide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wood%20penetration" title=" wood penetration"> wood penetration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wood%20retention" title=" wood retention"> wood retention</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immuno-transmission%20electron%20microscopy" title=" immuno-transmission electron microscopy"> immuno-transmission electron microscopy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polyclonal%20antibody" title=" polyclonal antibody"> polyclonal antibody</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36690/development-of-a-new-characterization-method-to-analyse-cypermethrin-penetration-in-wood-material-by-immunolabelling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/36690.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">413</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Investigation of NiO/V₂O₅ Powder Composite as Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Ayouz-Chebout">Katia Ayouz-Chebout</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fatima%20Boudeffar"> Fatima Boudeffar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maha%20Ayat"> Maha Ayat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Malika%20Berouaken"> Malika Berouaken</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chafiaa%20Yaddaden"> Chafiaa Yaddaden</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saloua%20Merazga"> Saloua Merazga</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nouredine%20Gabouze"> Nouredine Gabouze</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Transition metal oxide composites have been widely reported in energy storage and conversion systems. There has not been an analysis of the tools available to SMG staff for just-in-time knowledge acquisition (knowledge management systems) and reporting ICT incidents with a focus on an aspect of professional identity, namely, gender. This study is conducted in the milieu of UK museums, galleries, arts, academic, charitable, and cultural heritage sectors. Numerous authors suggest that males and females experience ICT usage differently. Therefore, it is important for SMG to investigate the apparent disparities so that solutions can be derived to minimize this digital divide if one exists. It is acknowledged at SMG that there are challenges with keeping up with an ever-changing digital landscape. Subsequently, this entails the rapid upskilling of staff and developing an infrastructure that supports just-in-time technological knowledge acquisition and reporting technology-related issues. This problem was addressed by analyzing ServiceNow ICT incident reports and reports from knowledge articles from a six-month period from February to July. This study found a statistically significant relationship between gender and reporting an ICT incident. There is also a significant relationship between gender and the priority level of ICT incidents. Interestingly, there is no statistically significant relationship between gender and reading knowledge articles. Additionally, there is no statistically significant relationship between gender and reporting an ICT incident related to the knowledge article that was read by staff. The knowledge acquired from this study is useful to service desk management practice as it will help to inform the creation of future knowledge articles and ICT incident reporting processes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20divide" title="digital divide">digital divide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ICT%20service%20desk%20practice" title=" ICT service desk practice"> ICT service desk practice</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knowledge%20management%20systems" title=" knowledge management systems"> knowledge management systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=workplace%20learning" title=" workplace learning"> workplace learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138065/the-use-of-knowledge-management-systems-and-information-communication-technology-service-desk-management-to-minimize-the-digital-divide-experienced-in-the-museum-sector" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138065.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">125</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">15</span> Improvement of Direct Torque and Flux Control of Dual Stator Induction Motor Drive Using Intelligent Techniques</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kouzi%20Katia">Kouzi Katia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper proposes a Direct Torque Control (DTC) algorithm of dual Stator Induction Motor (DSIM) drive using two approach intelligent techniques: Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach replaces the switching table selector block of conventional DTC and Mamdani Fuzzy Logic controller (FLC) is used for stator resistance estimation. The fuzzy logic controller gives the future stator resistance increment at the output. The main advantage of suggested algorithm control is to reduce the hardware complexity of conventional selectors, to avoid the drive instability that may occur in certain situation and ensure the tracking of the actual of the stator resistance. This study is based on laboratory experiments to characterize the incorporation kinetics of the radiotracer 51Cr in two oxidation states (III and VI), under different salinities (7, 15, and 21 ‰). Samples of two benthonic species were collected on the margins of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), acclimated in the laboratory and subsequently subjected to experiments. In tests with 51Cr (III and IV), it was observed that accumulation of the metal in <em>Ulva</em> sp. has inverse relationship with salinity, while for <em>R. maritima</em>, the maximum accumulation occurs in salinity 21‰. In experiments with Cr(III), increases in the uptake of ion by both species were verified. The activity of Cr(III) was up to 19 times greater than the Cr(VI). As regards the potential for accumulation of metals, a better sensitivity of <em>Ulva</em> sp. for any chromium tri or hexavalent forms was verified, while for the Cr(VI) it will require low salinities and longer exposure (>24h). For <em>R. maritima</em>, the results showed the uptake of Cr(VI) increase along with time (>20h), because this species is more resistant for the hexavalent form and useful for any salinity as well. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chromium" title="chromium">chromium</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cr-51" title=" Cr-51"> Cr-51</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=macroalgae" title=" macroalgae"> macroalgae</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=macrophyte" title=" macrophyte"> macrophyte</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=uptake" title=" uptake"> uptake</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61608/studies-on-bioaccumulation-of-51cr-by-ulva-sp-and-ruppia-maritima" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61608.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">421</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Effects of Voltage Pulse Characteristics on Some Performance Parameters of LiₓCoO₂-based Resistive Switching Memory Devices</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Van%20Son%20Nguyen">Van Son Nguyen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Van%20Huy%20Mai"> Van Huy Mai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alec%20Moradpour"> Alec Moradpour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pascale%20Auban%20Senzier"> Pascale Auban Senzier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claude%20Pasquier"> Claude Pasquier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kang%20Wang"> Kang Wang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pierre-Antoine%20Albouy"> Pierre-Antoine Albouy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marcelo%20J.%20Rozenberg"> Marcelo J. To face the limitations of existing Flash memory cells (endurance, downscaling, rapidity…), new approaches are emerging, among them resistive switching memories (Re-RAM). In this work, we analysed the behaviour of LixCoO2 oxide thin films in electrode/film/electrode devices. Preliminary results have been obtained concerning the influence of bias pulses characteristics (duration, value) on some performance parameters, such as endurance and resistance ratio (ROFF/RON). Besides, Conducting Probe Atomic Force Microscopy (CP-AFM) characterizations of the devices have been carried out to better understand some causes of performance failure, and thus help optimizing the switching performance of such devices. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non%20volatile%20resistive%20memories" title="non volatile resistive memories">non volatile resistive memories</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resistive%20switching" title=" resistive switching"> resistive switching</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thin%20films" title=" thin films"> thin films</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=endurance" title=" endurance"> endurance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65064/effects-of-voltage-pulse-characteristics-on-some-performance-parameters-of-licoo2-based-resistive-switching-memory-devices" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65064.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">611</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> The Food and Nutrition Security in Brazilian Quilombo: The Account of Experiences in Two Titled Territories</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dyego%20Ramos%20Henrique">Dyego Ramos Henrique</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Viviane%20Pimentel"> Viviane Pimentel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Souto"> Katia Souto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Val%C3%A9ria%20Mendon%C3%A7a"> Ana Valéria Mendonça</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrea%20Gallassi"> Andrea Gallassi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Socioeconomic inequalities in Brazil have accentuated the aggravations of poverty among the most vulnerable populations, among which are the quilombola communities. The objective was to reflect on a situation of food and nutritional security in two Brazilian quilombola communities. The data were collected by means of reports of experience through the production of talk wheels in two quilombola communities (Itamatatiua and Mesquita), located in the cities of Alcântara and Cidade Ocidental. Access to health services and health promotion actions were still incipient in the quilombola communities visited. The perceptions of the participants of the quilombolas revealed that there are still repressed demands that have rendered the fulfillment of the principles of equity, universality and integrality, both for access to health and for access and availability of food. They recognize in governmental instances a socioeconomic-cultural valorization and nutritional qualities intrinsic to the foods produced by them. Although they have been used as communities of quilombolas live and their level of access to services and programs, dealing with quilombola communities does not mean dealing with 'isolated groups or a strictly homogeneous population.' It demands a great need of attention in relation to the access and availability of food, besides overcoming barriers that made it an unfeasible valuation of social, economic and cultural precepts, intrinsic to the thought about food and nutritional security in Brazilian quilombos. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=access%20to%20services" title="access to services">access to services</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=food%20and%20nutrition%20security" title=" food and nutrition security"> food and nutrition security</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=health%20promotion" title=" health promotion"> health promotion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quilombo%20population" title=" quilombo population"> quilombo population</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79166/the-food-and-nutrition-security-in-brazilian-quilombo-the-account-of-experiences-in-two-titled-territories" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79166.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">227</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Fluorescent Ph-Sensing Bandage for Point-of-Care Wound Diagnostics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cherifi%20Katia">Cherifi Katia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Al-Hawat%20Marie-Lynn"> Al-Hawat Marie-Lynn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tricou%20Leo-Paul"> Tricou Leo-Paul</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lamontagne%20Stephanie"> Lamontagne Stephanie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tran%20Minh"> Tran Minh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ngu%20Amy%20Ching%20Yie"> Ngu Amy Ching Yie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Manrique%20Gabriela"> Manrique Gabriela</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guirguis%20Natalie"> Guirguis Natalie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Machuca%20Parra%20Arturo%20Israel"> Machuca Parra Arturo Israel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Matoori%20Simon"> Matoori Simon</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious and prevalent complication of diabetes. Current diagnostic options are limited to macroscopic wound analysis such as wound size, depth, and infection. Molecular diagnostics promise to improve DFU diagnosis, staging, and assessment of treatment response. Here, we developed a rapid and easy-to-use fluorescent pH-sensing bandage for wound diagnostics. In a fluorescent dye screen, we identified pyranine as the lead compound due to its suitable pH-sensing properties in the clinically relevant pH range of 6 to 9. To minimize the release of this dye into the wound bed, we screened a library of ionic microparticles and found a strong adhesion of the anionic dye to a cationic polymeric microparticle. These dye-loaded microparticles showed a strong fluorescence response in the clinically relevant pH range of 6 to 9 and a dye release below 1% after one day in biological media. The dye-loaded microparticles were subsequently encapsulated in a calcium alginate hydrogel to minimize the interaction of the microparticles with the wound tissue. This pH-sensing diagnostic wound dressing was tested on full-thickness dorsal wounds of mice, and a linear fluorescence response (R2 = 0.9909) to clinically relevant pH values was observed. These findings encourage further development of this pH-sensing system for molecular diagnostics in DFUs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wound%20ph" title="wound ph">wound ph</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fluorescence" title=" fluorescence"> fluorescence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diagnostics" title=" diagnostics"> diagnostics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diabetic%20foot%20ulcer" title=" diabetic foot ulcer"> diabetic foot ulcer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wound%20healing" title=" wound healing"> wound healing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chronic%20wounds" title=" chronic wounds"> chronic wounds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diabetes" title=" diabetes"> diabetes</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177542/fluorescent-ph-sensing-bandage-for-point-of-care-wound-diagnostics" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177542.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">86</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Development of Tutorial Courseware on Selected Topics in Mathematics, Science and the English Language</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alice%20D.%20Dioquino">Alice D. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. Identify the appropriate Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model in the development of the courseware material; 2. Assess the courseware material according to its: a. Content Characteristics; b. Instructional Characteristics; and c. Technical Characteristics 3. Find out if there is a significant difference in the performance of students before and after using the tutorial CAI. This research is developmental as well as a one group pretest-posttest design. The study had two phases. Phase I includes the needs analysis, writing of lessons and storyboard by the respective experts in each field. Phase II includes the digitization or the actual development of the courseware by the faculty of the ICT department. In this phase it adapted an instructional systems design (ISD) model which is the ADDIE model. ADDIE stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. Formative evaluation was conducted simultaneously with the different phases to detect and remedy any bugs in the courseware along the areas of content, instructional and technical characteristics. The expected output are the digitized lessons in Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Communication Arts in English. Students and some IT experts validated the CAI material using the Evaluation Form by Wong & Wong. They validated the CAI materials as Highly Acceptable with an overall mean rating of 4.527and standard deviation of 0 which means that they were one in the ratings they have given the CAI materials. A mean gain was recorded and computing the t-test for dependent samples it showed that there were significant differences in the mean achievement of the students before and after the treatment (using CAI). The identified ISD model used in the development of the tutorial courseware was the ADDIE model. The quantitative analyses of data based on ratings given by the respondents’ shows that the tutorial courseware possess the characteristics and or qualities of a very good computer-based courseware. The ratings given by the different evaluators with regard to content, instructional, and technical aspects of the Tutorial Courseware are in conformity towards being excellent. Students performed better in mathematics, biology chemistry, physics and the English Communication Arts after they were exposed to the tutorial courseware. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CAI" title="CAI">CAI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tutorial%20courseware" title=" tutorial courseware"> tutorial courseware</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Instructional%20Systems%20Design%20%28ISD%29%20Model" title=" Instructional Systems Design (ISD) Model"> Instructional Systems Design (ISD) Model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education" title=" education"> education</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/8852/development-of-tutorial-courseware-on-selected-topics-in-mathematics-science-and-the-english-language" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/8852.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">346</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> MicroRNA-211 Regulates Oxidative Phosphorylation and Energy Metabolism in Human Vitiligoa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anupama%20Sahoo">Anupama Sahoo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bongyong%20Lee"> Bongyong Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Boniface"> Katia Boniface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julien%20Seneschal"> Julien Seneschal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sanjaya%20K.%20Sahoo"> Sanjaya K. Vitiligo has a complex immune, genetic, environmental, and biochemical etiology, but the exact molecular mechanisms of vitiligo development and progression, particularly those related to metabolic control, are poorly understood. Here we characterized the human vitiligo cell line PIG3V and the normal human melanocytes, HEM-l by RNA-sequencing, targeted metabolomics, and shotgun lipidomics. Melanocyte-enriched miR-211, a known metabolic switch in non-pigmented melanoma cells, was severely downregulated in vitiligo cell line PIG3V and skin biopsies from vitiligo patients, while its novel predicted targets transcriptional co-activator PGC1-α (PPARGC1A), ribonucleotide reductase regulatory subunit M2 (RRM2), and serine-threonine protein kinase TAO1 (TAOK1) were reciprocally upregulated. miR-211 binds to PGC1-α 3’UTR locus and represses it. Although mitochondrial numbers were constant, mitochondrial complexes I, II, and IV and respiratory responses were defective in vitiligo cells. Nanoparticle-coated miR-211 partially augmented the oxygen consumption rate in PIG3V cells. The lower oxygen consumption rate, changes in lipid and metabolite profiles, and increased reactive oxygen species production observed in vitiligo cells appear to be partly due to abnormal regulation of miR-211 and its target genes. These genes represent potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in human vitiligo. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolism" title="metabolism">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microRNA" title=" microRNA"> microRNA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mitochondria" title=" mitochondria"> mitochondria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vitiligo" title=" vitiligo"> vitiligo</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71990/microrna-211-regulates-oxidative-phosphorylation-and-energy-metabolism-in-human-vitiligoa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71990.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">367</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> PlayTrain: A Research and Intervention Project for Early Childhood Teacher Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dalila%20Lino">Dalila Lino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Joao%20Hortas"> Maria Joao Hortas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carla%20Rocha"> Carla Rocha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Clarisse%20Nunes"> Clarisse Nunes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natalia%20Vieira"> Natalia Vieira</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marina%20Fuertes"> Marina Fuertes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K%C3%A1tia%20Sa"> Kátia Sa</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The value of play is recognized worldwide and is considered a fundamental right of all children, as defined in Article 31 of the United Nations Children’s Rights. It is consensual among the scientific community that play, and toys are of vital importance for children’s learning and development. Play promotes the acquisition of language, enhances creativity and improves social, affective, emotional, cognitive and motor development of young children. Young children ages 0 to 6 who have had many opportunities to get involved in play show greater competence to adapt to new and unexpected situations and more easily overcome the pain and suffering caused by traumatic situations. The PlayTrain Project aims to understand the places/spaces of play in the education of children from 0 to 6 years and promoting the training of preschool teachers to become capable of developing practices that enhance children’s agency, experimentation in the physical and social world and the development of imagination and creativity. This project follows the Design-Based-Research (DBR) and has two dimensions: research and intervention. The participants are 120 students from the Master in Pre-school Education of the Higher School of Education, Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon enrolled in the academic year 2018/2019. The development of workshops focused on the role of play and toys for young children’s learning promotes the participants reflection and the development of skills and knowledge to construct developmentally appropriated practices in early childhood education. Data was collected through an online questionnaire and focal groups. Results show that the PlayTrain Project contribute to the development of a body of knowledge about the role of play for early childhood education. It was possible to identify the needs of preschool teacher education and to enhance the discussion among the scientific and academic community about the importance of deepening the role of play and toys in the study plans of the masters in pre-school education. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=children%27s%20learning" title="children's learning">children's learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20childhood%20education" title=" early childhood education"> early childhood education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=play" title=" play"> play</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teacher%20education" title=" teacher education"> teacher education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=toys" title=" toys"> toys</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106294/playtrain-a-research-and-intervention-project-for-early-childhood-teacher-education" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106294.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">144</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Development of a Nursing Care Program Based on Anthroposophic External Therapy for the Pediatric Hospital in Brazil and Germany</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karina%20Peron">Karina Peron</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ricardo%20Ghelman"> Ricardo Ghelman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monica%20Taminato"> Monica Taminato</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20R.%20Oliveira"> Katia R. The central components in the performance of anthroposophic nursing procedures are direct physical contact, promotion of proper rhythm, thermal regulation and the construction of a calm and empathic atmosphere, safe for patients and their caregivers. The procedures of anthroposophic external therapies (AET), basically composed of the application of compresses and the use of natural products, provide an opportunity to intensify the therapeutic results through an innovative, complementary and integrative model in the university hospital. The objective of this work is to report the implementation of a program of nursing techniques (AET) through a partnership between the Pediatric Oncology Sector of the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo and Charite University of Berlin, with lecturers from Berlin's Integrative Hospital Havelhöhe and Witten-Herdecke Integrative Hospital, both in Germany. Intensive training activities of the Hospital's nursing staff and a survey on AET needs were developed based on the most prevalent complaints in pediatric oncology patients in the three environments of the Hospital of Pediatric Oncology: Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Division of Internal Patients. We obtained the approval of the clinical protocol of external anthroposophic therapies for nursing care by the Ethics Committee and the Academic Council of the Hospital. With this project, we highlight the key AET needs that will be part of the standard program of pediatric oncology care with appropriate scientific support. The results of the prevalent symptoms were: vomiting, nausea, pain, difficulty in starting sleep, constipation, cold extremities, mood disorder and psychomotor agitation. This project was the pioneer within the Integrative Pediatrics Program, as an innovative concept of Medicine and Integrative Health presented at scientific meetings. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integrative%20health%20care" title="integrative health care">integrative health care</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integrative%20nursing" title=" integrative nursing"> integrative nursing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pediatric%20nursing" title=" pediatric nursing"> pediatric nursing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pediatric%20oncology" title=" pediatric oncology"> pediatric oncology</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83312/development-of-a-nursing-care-program-based-on-anthroposophic-external-therapy-for-the-pediatric-hospital-in-brazil-and-germany" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83312.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">266</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Online Delivery Approaches of Post Secondary Virtual Inclusive Media Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Margot%20Whitfield">Margot Whitfield</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrea%20Ducent"> Andrea Ducent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marie%20Catherine%20Rombaut"> Marie Catherine Rombaut</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Iassinovskaia"> Katia Iassinovskaia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Deborah%20Fels"> Deborah Fels</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Learning how to create inclusive media, such as closed captioning (CC) and audio description (AD), in North America is restricted to the private sector, proprietary company-based training. We are delivering (through synchronous and asynchronous online learning) the first Canadian post-secondary, practice-based continuing education course package in inclusive media for broadcast production and processes. Despite the prevalence of CC and AD taught within the field of translation studies in Europe, North America has no comparable field of study. This novel approach to audio visual translation (AVT) education develops evidence-based methodology innovations, stemming from user study research with blind/low vision and Deaf/hard of hearing audiences for television and theatre, undertaken at Ryerson University. Knowledge outcomes from the courses include a) Understanding how CC/AD fit within disability/regulatory frameworks in Canada. b) Knowledge of how CC/AD could be employed in the initial stages of production development within broadcasting. c) Writing and/or speaking techniques designed for media. d) Hands-on practice in captioning re-speaking techniques and open source technologies, or in AD techniques. e) Understanding of audio production technologies and editing techniques. The case study of the curriculum development and deployment, involving first-time online course delivery from academic and practitioner-based instructors in introductory Captioning and Audio Description courses (CDIM 101 and 102), will compare two different instructors' approaches to learning design, including the ratio of synchronous and asynchronous classroom time and technological engagement tools on meeting software platform such as breakout rooms and polling. Student reception of these two different approaches will be analysed using qualitative thematic and quantitative survey analysis. Thus far, anecdotal conversations with students suggests that they prefer synchronous compared with asynchronous learning within our hands-on online course delivery method. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclusive%20media%20theory" title="inclusive media theory">inclusive media theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=broadcasting%20practices" title=" broadcasting practices"> broadcasting practices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AVT%20post%20secondary%20education" title=" AVT post secondary education"> AVT post secondary education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=respeaking" title=" respeaking"> respeaking</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=audio%20description" title=" audio description"> audio description</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=learning%20design" title=" learning design"> learning design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virtual%20education" title=" virtual education"> virtual education</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/134562/online-delivery-approaches-of-post-secondary-virtual-inclusive-media-education" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/134562.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">183</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Spatial Analysis of the Socio-Environmental Vulnerability in Medium-Sized Cities: Case Study of Municipality of Caraguatatuba SP-Brazil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20C.%20Bortoletto">Katia C. The aim of this study is to analyze the socio-environmental vulnerability obtained through a Census survey, followed by both a statistical analysis (PCA/SPSS/IBM) and a spatial analysis by GIS (ArcGis/ESRI), taking as a case study the Municipality of Caraguatatuba-SP, Brazil. In the municipal development plan analysis the emphasis was given to the Special Zone of Social Interest (ZEIS), the Urban Expansion Zone (ZEU) and the Environmental Protection Zone (ZPA). For the mapping of the social and environmental vulnerabilities of the study area the exposure of people (criticality) and of the place (support capacity) facing disaster risk were obtained from the 2010 Census from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Considering the criticality, the variables of greater influence were related to literate persons responsible for the household and literate persons with 5 or more years of age; persons with 60 years or more of age and income of the person responsible for the household. In the Support Capacity analysis, the predominant influence was on the good household infrastructure in districts with low population density and also the presence of neighborhoods with little urban infrastructure and inadequate housing. The results of the comparative analysis show that the areas with high and very high vulnerability classes cover the classes of the ZEIS and the ZPA, whose zoning includes: Areas occupied by low-income population, presence of children and young people, irregular occupations and land suitable to urbanization but underutilized. The presence of zones of urban sprawl (ZEU) in areas of high to very high socio-environmental vulnerability reflects the inadequate use of the urban land in relation to the spatial distribution of the population and the territorial infrastructure, which favors the increase of disaster risk. It can be concluded that the study allowed observing the convergence between the vulnerability analysis and the classified areas in urban zoning. The occupation of areas unsuitable for housing due to its characteristics of risk was confirmed, thus concluding that the methodologies applied are agile instruments to subsidize actions to the reduction disasters risk. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=socio-environmental%20vulnerability" title="socio-environmental vulnerability">socio-environmental vulnerability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20zoning" title=" urban zoning"> urban zoning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reduction%20disasters%20risk" title=" reduction disasters risk"> reduction disasters risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=methodologies" title=" methodologies"> methodologies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25628/spatial-analysis-of-the-socio-environmental-vulnerability-in-medium-sized-cities-case-study-of-municipality-of-caraguatatuba-sp-brazil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25628.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">298</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Comparing Deep Architectures for Selecting Optimal Machine Translation </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Despoina%20Mouratidis">Despoina Mouratidis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Lida%20Kermanidis"> Katia Lida Kermanidis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Machine translation (MT) is a very important task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). MT evaluation is crucial in MT development, as it constitutes the means to assess the success of an MT system, and also helps improve its performance. Several methods have been proposed for the evaluation of (MT) systems. Some of the most popular ones in automatic MT evaluation are score-based, such as the BLEU score, and others are based on lexical similarity or syntactic similarity between the MT outputs and the reference involving higher-level information like part of speech tagging (POS). This paper presents a language-independent machine learning framework for classifying pairwise translations. This framework uses vector representations of two machine-produced translations, one from a statistical machine translation model (SMT) and one from a neural machine translation model (NMT). The vector representations consist of automatically extracted word embeddings and string-like language-independent features. These vector representations used as an input to a multi-layer neural network (NN) that models the similarity between each MT output and the reference, as well as between the two MT outputs. To evaluate the proposed approach, a professional translation and a "ground-truth" annotation are used. The parallel corpora used are English-Greek (EN-GR) and English-Italian (EN-IT), in the educational domain and of informal genres (video lecture subtitles, course forum text, etc.) that are difficult to be reliably translated. They have tested three basic deep learning (DL) architectures to this schema: (i) fully-connected dense, (ii) Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and (iii) Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Experiments show that all tested architectures achieved better results when compared against those of some of the well-known basic approaches, such as Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Better accuracy results are obtained when LSTM layers are used in our schema. In terms of a balance between the results, better accuracy results are obtained when dense layers are used. The reason for this is that the model correctly classifies more sentences of the minority class (SMT). For a more integrated analysis of the accuracy results, a qualitative linguistic analysis is carried out. In this context, problems have been identified about some figures of speech, as the metaphors, or about certain linguistic phenomena, such as per etymology: paronyms. It is quite interesting to find out why all the classifiers led to worse accuracy results in Italian as compared to Greek, taking into account that the linguistic features employed are language independent. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20learning" title="machine learning">machine learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20translation%20evaluation" title=" machine translation evaluation"> machine translation evaluation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neural%20network%20architecture" title=" neural network architecture"> neural network architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pairwise%20classification" title=" pairwise classification"> pairwise classification</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110607/comparing-deep-architectures-for-selecting-optimal-machine-translation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110607.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">132</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> A Longitudinal Study of Social Engagement in Classroom in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cecile%20Garry">Cecile Garry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Rovira"> Katia Rovira</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julie%20Brisson"> Julie Brisson</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is defined by a qualitative and quantitative impairment of social interaction. Indeed early intervention programs, such as the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), aimed at encouraging the development of social skills. In classroom, the children need to be socially engaged to learn. Early intervention programs can thus be implemented in kindergarten schools. In these schools, ASD children have more opportunities to interact with their peers or adults than in elementary schools. However, the preschool children with ASD are less socially engaged than their typically developing peers in the classroom. They initiate, respond and maintain less the social interactions. In addition, they produce more responses than initiations. When they interact, the non verbal communication is more used than verbal or symbolic communication forms and they are more engaged with adults than with peers. Nevertheless, communicative patterns may vary according to the clinical profiles of ASD children. Indeed, the ASD children with better cognitive skills interact more with their peers and use more symbolic communication than the ASD children with a low cognitive level. ASD children with the less severe symptoms use more the verbal communication than ASD children with the more severe symptoms. Small groups and structured activities encourage coordinated joint engagement episodes in ASD children. Our goal is to evaluate ASD children’s social engagement development in class, with their peers or adults, during dyadic or group activities. Participants were 19 preschool children with ASD aged from 3 to 6 years old that benefited of an early intervention in special kindergarten schools. Severity of ASD symptoms was measured with the CARS at the beginning of the follow-up. Classroom situations of interaction were recorded during 10 minutes (5 minutes of dyadic interaction and 5 minutes of a group activity), every 2 months, during 10 months. Social engagement behaviors of children, including initiations, responses and imitation, directed to a peer or an adult, were then coded. The Observer software (Noldus) that allows to annotate behaviors was the coding system used. A double coding was conducted and revealed a good inter judges fidelity. Results show that ASD children were more often and longer socially engaged in dyadic than in groups situations. They were also more engaged with adults than with peers. Children with the less severe symptoms of ASD were more socially engaged in groups situations than children with the more severe symptoms of ASD. Then, ASD children with the less severe symptoms of ASD were more engaged with their peers than ASD children with the more severe symptoms of ASD. However, the engagement frequency increased during the 10 month of follow-up but only for ASD children with the more severe symptoms at the beginning. To conclude, these results highlighted the necessity of individualizing early intervention programs according to the clinical profile of the child. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autism%20spectrum%20disorder" title="autism spectrum disorder">autism spectrum disorder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=preschool%20children" title=" preschool children"> preschool children</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=developmental%20psychology" title=" developmental psychology"> developmental psychology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=early%20interventions" title=" early interventions"> early interventions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20interactions" title=" social interactions"> social interactions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92091/a-longitudinal-study-of-social-engagement-in-classroom-in-children-with-autism-spectrum-disorder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92091.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">159</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> CSPG4 Molecular Target in Canine Melanoma, Osteosarcoma and Mammary Tumors for Novel Therapeutic Strategies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paola%20Modesto">Paola Modesto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Floriana%20Fruscione"> Floriana Fruscione</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Isabella%20Martini"> Isabella Martini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Simona%20Perga"> Simona Perga</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federica%20Riccardo"> Federica Riccardo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mariateresa%20Camerino"> Mariateresa Camerino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Davide%20Giacobino"> Davide Giacobino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cecilia%20Gola"> Cecilia Gola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luca%20Licenziato"> Luca Licenziato</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elisabetta%20Razzuoli"> Elisabetta Razzuoli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Varello"> Katia Varello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lorella%20Maniscalco"> Lorella Maniscalco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Bozzetta"> Elena Bozzetta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angelo%20Ferrari"> Angelo Ferrari</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Canine and human melanoma, osteosarcoma (OSA), and mammary carcinomas are aggressive tumors with common characteristics making dogs a good model for comparative oncology. Novel therapeutic strategies against these tumors could be useful to both species. In humans, chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4) is a marker involved in tumor progression and could be a candidate target for immunotherapy. The anti-CSPG4 DNA electrovaccination has shown to be an effective approach for canine malignant melanoma (CMM) [1]. An immunohistochemistry evaluation of CSPG4 expression in tumour tissue is generally performed prior to electrovaccination. To assess the possibility to perform a rapid molecular evaluation and in order to validate these spontaneous canine tumors as the model for human studies, we investigate the CSPG4 gene expression by RT qPCR in CMM, OSA, and canine mammary tumors (CMT). The total RNA was extracted from RNAlater stored tissue samples (CMM n=16; OSA n=13; CMT n=6; five paired normal tissues for CMM, five paired normal tissues for OSA and one paired normal tissue for CMT), retro-transcribed and then analyzed by duplex RT-qPCR using two different TaqMan assays for the target gene CSPG4 and the internal reference gene (RG) Ribosomal Protein S19 (RPS19). RPS19 was selected from a panel of 9 candidate RGs, according to NormFinder analysis following the protocol already described [2]. Relative expression was analyzed by CFX Maestro™ Software. Student t-test and ANOVA were performed (significance set at P<0.05). Results showed that gene expression of CSPG4 in OSA tissues is significantly increased by 3-4 folds when compared to controls. In CMT, gene expression of the target was increased from 1.5 to 19.9 folds. In melanoma, although an increasing trend was observed, no significant differences between the two groups were highlighted. Immunohistochemistry analysis of the two cancer types showed that the expression of CSPG4 within CMM is concentrated in isles of cells compared to OSA, where the distribution of positive cells is homogeneous. This evidence could explain the differences in gene expression results.CSPG4 immunohistochemistry evaluation in mammary carcinoma is in progress. The evidence of CSPG4 expression in a different type of canine tumors opens the way to the possibility of extending the CSPG4 immunotherapy marker in CMM, OSA, and CMT and may have an impact to translate this strategy modality to human oncology. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=canine%20melanoma" title="canine melanoma">canine melanoma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=canine%20mammary%20carcinomas" title=" canine mammary carcinomas"> canine mammary carcinomas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=canine%20osteosarcoma" title=" canine osteosarcoma"> canine osteosarcoma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CSPG4" title=" CSPG4"> CSPG4</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gene%20expression" title=" gene expression"> gene expression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immunotherapy" title=" immunotherapy"> immunotherapy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141925/cspg4-molecular-target-in-canine-melanoma-osteosarcoma-and-mammary-tumors-for-novel-therapeutic-strategies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141925.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">174</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes in Spontaneously Occurring Canine Melanoma</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Simona%20Perga">Simona Perga</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chiara%20Beltramo"> Chiara Beltramo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Floriana%20Fruscione"> Floriana Fruscione</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Isabella%20Martini"> Isabella Martini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federica%20Cavallo"> Federica Cavallo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federica%20Riccardo"> Federica Riccardo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paolo%20Buracco"> Paolo Buracco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Selina%20Iussich"> Selina Iussich</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elisabetta%20Razzuoli"> Elisabetta Razzuoli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katia%20Varello"> Katia Varello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lorella%20Maniscalco"> Lorella Maniscalco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Bozzetta"> Elena Bozzetta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angelo%20Ferrari"> Angelo Ferrari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paola%20Modesto"> Paola Modesto</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: Human and canine melanoma have common clinical, histologic characteristics making dogs a good model for comparative oncology. The identification of specific genes and a better understanding of the genetic landscape, signaling pathways, and tumor–microenvironmental interactions involved in the cancer onset and progression is essential for the development of therapeutic strategies against this tumor in both species. In the present study, the differential expression of genes in spontaneously occurring canine melanoma and in paired normal tissue was investigated by targeted RNAseq. Material and Methods: Total RNA was extracted from 17 canine malignant melanoma (CMM) samples and from five paired normal tissues stored in RNA-later. In order to capture the greater genetic variability, gene expression analysis was carried out using two panels (Qiagen): Human Immuno-Oncology (HIO) and Mouse-Immuno-Oncology (MIO) and the miSeq platform (Illumina). These kits allow the detection of the expression profile of 990 genes involved in the immune response against tumors in humans and mice. The data were analyzed through the CLCbio Genomics Workbench (Qiagen) software using the Canis lupus familiaris genome as a reference. Data analysis were carried out both comparing the biologic group (tumoral vs. healthy tissues) and comparing neoplastic tissue vs. paired healthy tissue; a Fold Change greater than two and a p-value less than 0.05 were set as the threshold to select interesting genes. Results and Discussion: Using HIO 63, down-regulated genes were detected; 13 of those were also down-regulated comparing neoplastic sample vs. paired healthy tissue. Eighteen genes were up-regulated, 14 of those were also down-regulated comparing neoplastic sample vs. paired healthy tissue. Using the MIO, 35 down regulated-genes were detected; only four of these were down-regulated, also comparing neoplastic sample vs. paired healthy tissue. Twelve genes were up-regulated in both types of analysis. Considering the two kits, the greatest variation in Fold Change was in up-regulated genes. Dogs displayed a greater genetic homology with humans than mice; moreover, the results have shown that the two kits are able to detect different genes. Most of these genes have specific cellular functions or belong to some enzymatic categories; some have already been described to be correlated to human melanoma and confirm the validity of the dog as a model for the study of molecular aspects of human melanoma. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=animal%20model" title="animal
