Then she put<MH7760> the child<MH3206> in it and set<MH7760> <i>it</i> among the reeds<MH5488> by the bank<MH8193> of the Nile<MH2975>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And his sister<MH269> stood<MH3320> at a distance<MH7350> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>find<MH3045> out what<MH4100> would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>happen<MH6213a> to him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now the daughter<MH1323> of Pharaoh<MH6547> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> to bathe<MH7364> at the Nile<MH2975>, with her female<MH5291> attendants<MH5291> walking<MH1980> alongside<MH5921, 3027> the Nile<MH2975>; and she saw<MH7200> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>basket<MH8392> among<MH8432> the reeds<MH5488> and sent<MH7971> her slave<MH519> woman<MH519>, and she brought<MH3947> it <i>to her.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When she opened<MH6605a> <i>it,</i> she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>saw<MH7200> the child<MH3206>, and behold<MH2009>, <i>the</i> boy<MH5288> was crying<MH1058>. And she had<MH2550> pity<MH2550> on him and said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH2088> is one<MH4480> of the Hebrews&#8217;<MH5680> children<MH3206>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then his sister<MH269> said<MH559> to Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> daughter<MH1323>, &#8220;Shall I go<MH1980> and call<MH7121> a woman<MH802> for you who is nursing<MH3243> from the Hebrew<MH5680> women<MH5680>, so that she may nurse<MH3243> the child<MH3206> for you?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> daughter<MH1323> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Go<MH1980> <i>ahead.</i>&#8221; So the girl<MH5959> went<MH1980> and called<MH7121> the child&#8217;s<MH3206> mother<MH517>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> daughter<MH1323> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Take<MH1980> this<MH2088> child<MH3206> away and nurse<MH3243> him for me, and I will give<MH5414> <i>you</i> your wages<MH7939>.&#8221; So the woman<MH802> took<MH3947> the child<MH3206> and nursed<MH5134> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the child<MH3206> grew<MH1431>, and she brought<MH935> him to Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> daughter<MH1323> and he became<MH1961> her son<MH1121>. And she named<MH7121, 8034> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Moses<MH4872>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;Because<MH3588> I drew<MH4871> him out<MH4871> of the water<MH4325>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117>, when Moses<MH4872> had grown<MH1431> up<MH1431>, that he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>fellow<MH251> Hebrews<MH251> and looked<MH7200> at their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>hard<MH5450> labors<MH5450>; and he saw<MH7200> an Egyptian<MH4713> beating<MH5221> a Hebrew<MH5680>, one<MH4480> of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>fellow<MH251> Hebrews<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>looked<MH6437> this<MH3541> way<MH3541> and that<MH3541>, and when he saw<MH7200> that there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH376> <i>around,</i> he struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> the Egyptian<MH4713>, and hid<MH2934> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>his body in the sand<MH2344>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> the next<MH8145> day<MH3117>, and behold<MH2009>, two<MH8147> Hebrews<MH5680> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>fighting<MH5327b> with each other; and he said<MH559> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>offender<MH7563>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> are you striking<MH5221> your companion<MH7453>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, &#8220;Who<MH4310> made<MH7760> you a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>ruler<MH8269> and a judge<MH8199> over<MH5921> us? Do you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>intend<MH559> to kill<MH2026> me as you killed<MH2026> the Egyptian<MH4713>?&#8221; Then Moses<MH4872> was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Surely<MH403> the matter<MH1697> has become known<MH3045>!&#8221; <p class="hdg">Moses Escapes to Midian</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When Pharaoh<MH6547> heard<MH8085> about this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>, he tried<MH1245> to kill<MH2026> Moses<MH4872>. But Moses<MH4872> fled<MH1272> from the presence<MH6440> of Pharaoh<MH6547> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>settled<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Midian<MH4080>, and he sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> by a well<MH875>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now the priest<MH3548> of Midian<MH4080> had seven<MH7651> daughters<MH1323>; and they came<MH935> to draw<MH1802a> water<MH1802a> and filled<MH4390> the troughs<MH7298a> to water<MH8248> their father&#8217;s<MH1> flock<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the shepherds<MH7462a> came<MH935> and drove<MH1644> them away<MH1644>, but Moses<MH4872> stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> and helped<MH3467> them and watered<MH8248> their flock<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When they came<MH935> to their father<MH1> Reuel<MH7467>, he said<MH559>, &#8220;Why<MH4069> have you come<MH935> <i>back</i> so soon<MH4116> today<MH3117>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They said<MH559>, &#8220;An Egyptian<MH4713> saved<MH5337> us from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>the shepherds<MH7462a>, and what<MH1571> is<MH1571> more<MH1571>, he even<MH1802a> drew<MH1802a> water<MH1802a> for us and watered<MH8248> the flock<MH6629>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to his daughters<MH1323>, &#8220;Where<MH335> is he then? Why<MH4100> is it that you have left<MH5800a> the man<MH376> behind<MH5800a>? Invite<MH7121> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>to have something<MH3899> to eat<MH398>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And Moses<MH4872> was<MH2974> willing<MH2974> to live<MH3427> with the man<MH376>. And he gave<MH5414> his daughter<MH1323> Zipporah<MH6855> to Moses<MH4872>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then she gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and he named<MH7121, 8034> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>Gershom<MH1647>, for he said<MH559>, &#8220;I have been<MH1961> a stranger<MH1616> in a foreign<MH5237> land<MH776>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> in <i>the course of</i> those<MH1992a> many<MH7227a> days<MH3117> that the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> died<MH4191>.
