The term is used both literally and metaphorically throughout Scripture, often signifying completion, fulfillment, or the culmination of God's purposes.

End of Life

The Bible frequently addresses the end of human life, emphasizing the transient nature of earthly existence. In Ecclesiastes 7:2, it is written, "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the end of every man, and the living should take this to heart." This verse underscores the inevitability of death and the wisdom in contemplating one's mortality. The brevity of life is further highlighted in James 4:14, which states, "You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."

End of an Era

The Bible also speaks of the end of specific periods or dispensations. The Old Testament prophets often foretold the end of certain kingdoms or the conclusion of particular epochs. For instance, in Daniel 12:13, the angel tells Daniel, "But as for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance." This passage points to the end of the age and the promise of resurrection and reward.

End of the World

The eschatological aspect of "end" is a significant theme in the New Testament, particularly concerning the end times and the return of Christ. Jesus speaks of the end of the age in Matthew 24:14, saying, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." This indicates that the end of the world is tied to the fulfillment of the Great Commission.

The Apostle Paul also addresses the end times in 1 Corinthians 15:24, where he writes, "Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power." This passage reflects the ultimate victory of Christ over all opposing forces and the establishment of God's eternal kingdom.

Fulfillment of God's Plan

The concept of "end" is not merely about cessation but also about the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan. In Revelation 21:6, God declares, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life." Here, the "end" signifies the completion of God's work of salvation and the ushering in of a new creation where believers will enjoy eternal life.

The Bible assures believers that the end is not to be feared but anticipated with hope and faith. As stated in Romans 6:22, "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life." The end, therefore, is the gateway to eternal communion with God for those who are in Christ.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
In Hebrews 13:7, is the rendering of the unusual Greek word ekbasin, meaning "outcome", i.e., death.
