2010<br /> Copyright © 2010 Funimag &#8211; Michel Azéma, Paris (France)</p> <p>In the mid-nineteenth century, the British regarded the Russian expansion in Central Asia as a major threat to their Indian empire. The Russians had reached the banks of the Amu Darya border of Afghanistan. In 1850, the British never stopped wanting to consolidate their western border between Baluchistan and Afghanistan.<br /> In 1878 the British invaded Afghanistan which was acting as a buffer. A focus of the invasion was the Bolan Pass, which allowed them to take  Quetta. This was the beginning of the second Anglo-Afghan war.<br /> In 1879, they began to build a railway line connecting Sibi, Quetta (Baluchistan) in Kandahar (Afghanistan) and thus be able to stop any Russian advance from Kandahar. However the war ended in a defeat of the English that had to evacuate Afghanistan on August 10, 1880 while keeping the Quetta area. The project to reach Kandahar was abandoned and reduced, its new target was to reach Chaman on the new border between India and Afghanistan. Chaman was the first stronghold of British India and its defense against a potential Russian invasion had become strategic.<br /> To reach Chaman, the new railway line would cross the mountain range of the Khwaja Amran and required the digging of the tunnel Khojak 4 miles long and 3 years of work.<br /> The defense and the supply of Chaman could not wait for these three years of digging Khojak tunnel. The Indian government decided to build a temporary line of communication, quick and inexpensive to cross the mountains until the end of the work in the Khojak tunnel (1889-1891).<br /> The temporary railway line was built in 1888 and crossed the summit chain Khwaja Amran mountains with the help of four inclined cable railways which allowed to move locomotives and carriages from one side to the other side of the mountain.<br /> This set of lines and ramps worked perfectly for three years by passing the mountain from 5 to 20 trains per day in both directions until the opening of the Khojak tunnel 1891.</p> <p>The constraints that were imposed on these temporary funiculars:<br /> &#8211; Lifespan of 3 years and be inexpensive<br /> &#8211; Broad gauge (5 feet 6 inches)<br /> &#8211; Able to carry the heaviest locomotives<br /> &#8211; To be built in India<br /> &#8211; Minimum capacity of 400 tons / day</p> <p>The inclined planes #1 and #2 were classic cable cars each composed of two counterbalanced platforms running on a single track with a passing loop. Each platform consisted of a horizontal plate with two parallel rails to transport a car or a locomotive. Atop each of these two cable cars, a steam engine was operating the large sheaves fixed charge of moving the cable.<br /> At the top of the ramp #1 at an altitude of 2212 meters, a 1 km single track followed the crest of the mountain and brought to the inclined plane #2 which allowed down on the west slope with a gradient of 40% and about 600 meters length. On the west side, in addition to the inclined plane #2, there were two other ramps (#3 and #4) less steep and each separated by a single track. On each of these sections allow the locomotives to pull trains. Finally, the last section was 16 km length with a 2.5% gradient lead to Chaman at the Afghanistan border.<br /> In fact the inclined plane #1 had the distinction of being composed of two distinct but overlapping separated from each other by 6 inches.</p> <p><em><strong>(PK) Plans inclinés au Pakistan &#8211; Le tunnel de Khojak</strong></em></p> <p><em>Au milieu du XIXème siècle, les britanniques considéraient l&#8217;expansion russe en Asie Centrale comme une menace importante pour leur empire des Indes. Les russes avaient atteint les rives de l&#8217;Amou Daria aux frontières de l&#8217;Afghanistan. Dès 1850, les britanniques ne cessèrent de vouloir consolider leur frontière ouest entre le Baluchistan et l&#8217;Afghanistan.</em></p> <p><em>En 1878, les britanniques envahirent l&#8217;Afghanistan qui servait alors d&#8217;état tampon. Un des axes de l&#8217;invasion fut la Passe de Bolan qui leur permit de prendre Quetta. Ce fut le début de la deuxième guerre Anglo-Afghane.<br /> En 1879, ils commencèrent à construire une ligne de chemin de fer pour relier Sibi, Quetta (Baluchistan) à Kandahar (Afghanistan) et ainsi pouvoir arrêter une éventuelle avancée russe depuis Kandahar. Cependant cette guerre se solda par une défaite des anglais qui durent évacuer l&#8217;Afghanistan le 10 août 1880 tout en gardant la région de Quetta. Le projet d&#8217;atteindre Kandahar fut abandonné et son objectif réduit fut d&#8217;atteindre Chaman sur la nouvelle frontière entre les Indes et l&#8217;Afghanistan. Chaman était la première place forte des Indes britanniques et sa défense contre une potentielle invasion russe était devenue stratégique.<br /> Pour atteindre Chaman, la nouvelle ligne de chemin de fer devait franchir la chaîne de montagnes du Khwaja Amran et nécessitait le percement du tunnel du Khojak de 4 kilomètres de long et 3 ans de travaux.<br /> La défense et l&#8217;approvisionnement de Chaman ne pouvait pas attendre ces 3 années de percement du tunnel du Khojak. Le gouvernement des Indes pris la décision de construire un moyen de communication temporaire, rapide et peu onéreux pour franchir quand même la montagne le temps de terminer le tunnel du Khojak (1889-1891). C&#8217;est ainsi qu&#8217;en 1891 fut construite une ligne de chemin de fer sommitale qui franchissait la chaîne de montagnes du Khwaja Amran avec l&#8217;aide de quatre plan inclinés funiculaires qui permettaient de faire passer locomotives et wagons d&#8217;un côté à l&#8217;autre de la montagne.<br /> Cet ensemble de voies et plans inclinés a fonctionné parfaitement pendant trois années en faisant passer la montagne à 5 à 20 trains par jour dans les deux sens jusqu&#8217;à l&#8217;ouverture du tunnel de Khojak en 1891.</em></p> <p><em>Les contraintes qui étaient imposées à ces funiculaires temporaires :<br /> &#8211;    Durée de vie de 3 ans et donc être peu coûteux<br /> &#8211;    Ecartement des voies 1676 mm (5 feet 6 inches)<br /> &#8211;    Pouvoir transporter les plus lourdes locomotives<br /> &#8211;    Etre construits en Indes<br /> &#8211;    Capacité minimum de 400 tonnes / jour<br /> Les plans inclinés 1 et 2 étaient des funiculaires classiques composés chacun de deux plates formes contrebalancées roulant sur une voie unique avec un évitement central. Chaque plate forme était composée d&#8217;un plateau horizontal avec deux rails parallèles pour transporter un wagon ou une locomotive. Au sommet de chacun de ces deux funiculaires, une machine à vapeur fixe actionnait les grandes poulies chargées de mouvoir le câble.<br /> Au sommet du plan incliné n°1, à une altitude de 2212 mètres, une voie unique de 1 kilomètre suivait la crête de la montagne et amenait au plan incliné n°2 qui permettait de redescendre sur le versant ouest avec une pente de 40% et sur environ 600 mètres. Sur le versant ouest, outre le plan incliné n°2, il y avait deux autres plans inclinés (n°3 et n°4) moins pentus et séparés chacun par une voie unique. Sur chacun de ces tronçons des locomotives permettaient de tirer les wagons. Enfin, le dernier tronçon de 16 kilomètres permettait d&#8217;atteindre Chaman sur une voie de 2,5 %.<br /> En fait le plan incliné n°1 avait la particularité d&#8217;être composé de deux voies distinctes mais imbriquées séparées l&#8217;une de l&#8217;autre par 15cm.</em></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <figure id="attachment_3013" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3013" style="width: 500px"
