procured in the public and private arenas. Multiplicity usually exacerbates a more interactive relationship between divergent faiths thereby bringing into sharp focus the strained association of local Muslims and Jews considering the escalating violence in Palestine/Israel. This study firstly attempts to examine the status of traditional Muslim and Jewish women autonomously in the sacred spaces of the mosque, synagogue and home to highlight the customary gendered issues in the related spaces. These gendered sacred spaces are managed via ritual activity detennined in traditional law, which is rooted in genderized cosmogonies and myths founded in theology consequently exhibiting the interplay between theology and law. The ethnography unpacks the complexity and diversity of Somali identity formation, their culturally distinct politics of aesthetics in performances of Muslim-ness, and how they form community. Further, the paper focuses on the mass celebration of Mawlid Al-Nabi (the celebration of Prophet Mohammad’s birthday) in Cape Town. This celebration reveals an emergent Muslim urbanity and public performances of Muslim-ness that signify the integration of the religious and the secular, and the various ways in which Muslims position themselves within the “multicultural” context of contemporary South Africa. The paper examines the sense of citizenship and multiple belongings that Muslims have to their respective cultural localities (such as Malays, Somali, Indian, African and White), to an imagined Muslim community in Cape Town, to the South African nation, but also to a Muslim transnational Ummah. The paper explains that performance of Muslim-ness is partially influenced by, and embodies, distinct cultural localities of Muslims. Conversely, it appears to draw on aesthetics of Islam, which embody a symbolic enactment of sensorial religious sacredness, which is common, shared and performed by the culturally diverse transnational Muslim Ummah.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Aesthetics of Muslim public and community formations in Cape Town: observations of an anthropologist","attachmentId":40180329,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/18648529/Aesthetics_of_Muslim_public_and_community_formations_in_Cape_Town_observations_of_an_anthropologist","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/18648529/Aesthetics_of_Muslim_public_and_community_formations_in_Cape_Town_observations_of_an_anthropologist"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="754108" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/754108/Islamism_in_South_Africa_Discourse_in_Identity_and_Politics">Islamism in South Africa: Discourse in Identity and Politics</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="241149" href="https://uct.academia.edu/AbdulkaderTayob">Abdulkader Tayob</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This is a paper on Islamism that I wrote for al Mesbar Centre for Studies and Research. Existing studies of Islamists often focus on leading voices within movements, while studies which focus on piety and self-cultivation obscure ambiguities encountered within the lives of Muslim women. There is an implied denial of their agency as ordinary but active participants within both the private and public space. This paper argues that women made choices based on their deepening understanding of Islam (in general) and Islamist discourse (in particular). Furthermore, their capacity as agents cannot be viewed outside of their social, political and cultural context. Taking seriously the multiple forces within which they exist, and which operate on them, allows a more nuanced image of the actions of Muslim women activists to emerge.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"On being South African Muslims, Islamists and women: Expressions of agency and religious construction through the lens of biographies 1","attachmentId":60484115,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/40250925/On_being_South_African_Muslims_Islamists_and_women_Expressions_of_agency_and_religious_construction_through_the_lens_of_biographies_1","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/40250925/On_being_South_African_Muslims_Islamists_and_women_Expressions_of_agency_and_religious_construction_through_the_lens_of_biographies_1"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="11458906" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/11458906/Muslim_women_s_identities_in_South_Africa_A_Zanzibari_perspective_in_KwaZulu_Natal">Muslim women’s identities in South Africa: A Zanzibari perspective in KwaZulu-Natal</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="24797878" href="https://ukzn.academia.edu/GVahed">Goolam Vahed</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2014</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Muslim women’s identities in South Africa: A Zanzibari perspective in KwaZulu-Natal","attachmentId":36992945,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/11458906/Muslim_women_s_identities_in_South_Africa_A_Zanzibari_perspective_in_KwaZulu_Natal","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/11458906/Muslim_women_s_identities_in_South_Africa_A_Zanzibari_perspective_in_KwaZulu_Natal"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="27872311" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/27872311/Framing_Feminine_Identity_Exploring_Ways_of_Being_a_Woman_through_the_Practice_of_Faith_and_Ideas_of_Equality_and_Justice_through_Narratives_of_South_African_Muslim_Women_Activists">Framing Feminine Identity: Exploring Ways of Being a Woman, through the Practice of Faith, and Ideas of Equality and Justice through Narratives of South African Muslim Women Activists</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="39417791" href="https://uoregon.academia.edu/RachelAnderson">Rachel Anderson</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">What began as an attempt to explore Islamic Feminism through the life narratives of Muslim women, actually enabled a journey into exploring ways of being a woman, through the practice of faith, and ideas of justice and equality. Through multiple in-depth interviews and conversations, a visit to the mosque for Friday prayer, and a night at a theatrical production in the Muslim community, I spent time with influential Muslim women activists in the Durban community of South Africa listening, learning and reflecting. What I found was less concrete than labeling these women as ‘Islamic Feminists’ but it was also more unifying. Through telling these women’s stories, I hope to take the reader on a journey through the complicated nature of identity in order to not only shed light on a group of women who are making strides in social justice but to allow the thoughtful words of these women to help you along your own faith or identity journey. In the end, I offer a look into how, contrary to feminist thought, rejecting labels of Islamic feminism and instead allowing for narrative discourse free of labeling can actually prove to be more unifying for women of all faith backgrounds.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Framing Feminine Identity: Exploring Ways of Being a Woman, through the Practice of Faith, and Ideas of Equality and Justice through Narratives of South African Muslim Women Activists","attachmentId":48156384,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/27872311/Framing_Feminine_Identity_Exploring_Ways_of_Being_a_Woman_through_the_Practice_of_Faith_and_Ideas_of_Equality_and_Justice_through_Narratives_of_South_African_Muslim_Women_Activists","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/27872311/Framing_Feminine_Identity_Exploring_Ways_of_Being_a_Woman_through_the_Practice_of_Faith_and_Ideas_of_Equality_and_Justice_through_Narratives_of_South_African_Muslim_Women_Activists"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="8611070" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/8611070/Feminism_and_Religion_and_the_Politics_of_Location_Situating_Islamic_Feminism_in_South_Africa">Feminism and Religion and the Politics of Location: Situating Islamic Feminism in South Africa</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="241167" href="https://uio.academia.edu/NinaHoel">Nina Hoel</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Journal of Gender and Religion in Africa Vol 19(2): 73-89, 2013</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Feminism and Religion and the Politics of Location: Situating Islamic Feminism in South Africa","attachmentId":34976169,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8611070/Feminism_and_Religion_and_the_Politics_of_Location_Situating_Islamic_Feminism_in_South_Africa","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/8611070/Feminism_and_Religion_and_the_Politics_of_Location_Situating_Islamic_Feminism_in_South_Africa"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="41104664" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/41104664/South_Africas_Ahmadiyyah_Community_A_Religious_Minority_with_a_Double_Identity">South Africa's Ahmadiyyah Community: A Religious Minority with a Double-Identity</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="682880" href="https://ub-bw.academia.edu/MuhammedHaron">Muhammed Haron</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Africa is the home of a variety of religious traditions and their offshoots. Like other continents, these traditions encountered internal and external challenges. In the case of Africa"s Muslims they have grown over the centuries and in certain parts are in the majority and in others they are in the minority. Since it is well-nigh beyond the focus of this paper to cover the whole continent to discuss its Muslim societies, it decided to concentrate on these by offering specific attention to the Ahmadiyyah Community; a community that emerged during the early part of the 20 th century and one that made its presence felt continently; particularly in what has been described as Sub-Saharan Africa. But anyone attempting to give a detailed and balanced understanding of this community across the continent in a paper such as this will not succeed it in providing a reasonable coverage. That being the case, it opted to restrict itself by reflecting on the Ahmadiyyah community in South Africa; a community that has evolved since the 1950s into a relatively active one but that has had legal run-ins with the national Muslim theological bodies. The purpose of this paper is to locate this community in its socio-historical contexts continentally and regionally. Thereafter it intends to zoom in on the conflict that develop in the 1960s and that spilled over into the 1980s when court cases were held. Alongside this, it refers to two texts that were published during those years; the one text will be briefly discussed to show how the Ahmadiyyah ideologue, Mr. Dawood Sydow championed its cause and advanced ideas in reply to a local controversial tract; and it then considers the anti-Ahmadiyyah publication that was used to undercut the emerging community theologically and sociologically. The paper hopes to illustrate to what extent the Ahmadiyyah managed to sustain itself and hold onto its double identity within a predominantly non-Muslim Christian environment in South Africa. It, however, conceptualizes the terms "movement" and "community" to frame the discussion.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"South Africa's Ahmadiyyah Community: A Religious Minority with a Double-Identity","attachmentId":61362142,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/41104664/South_Africas_Ahmadiyyah_Community_A_Religious_Minority_with_a_Double_Identity","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/41104664/South_Africas_Ahmadiyyah_Community_A_Religious_Minority_with_a_Double_Identity"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":91805498,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":91805498,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_91805498" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
