<span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of heaven<MH8064>, who<MH834> took<MH3947> me from my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> and from the land<MH776> of my birth<MH4138>, and who<MH834> spoke<MH1696> to me and who<MH834> swore<MH7650> to me, saying<MH559>, ‘To your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> I will give<MH5414> this<MH2088> land<MH776>’—He will send<MH7971> His angel<MH4397> ahead<MH6440> of you, and you will take<MH3947> a wife<MH802> for my son<MH1121> from there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But if<MH518> the woman<MH802> is<MH14> not willing<MH14> to follow<MH1980, 310> you, then you will be<MH5352> free<MH5352> of this<MH2088> oath<MH7621> of mine; only<MH7534b> do not take<MH7725> my son<MH1121> back<MH7725> there<MH8033>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So the servant<MH5650> placed<MH7760> his hand<MH3027> under<MH8478> the thigh<MH3409> of his master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>, and swore<MH7650> to him concerning<MH5921> this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the servant<MH5650> took<MH3947> ten<MH6235> camels<MH1581> from the camels<MH1581> of his master<MH113>, and went<MH1980> out with a variety<MH3605> of good<MH2898> things<MH2898> of his master’s<MH113> in his hand<MH3027>; so he set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Mesopotamia<MH763>, to the city<MH5892b> of Nahor<MH5152>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He made the camels<MH1581> kneel<MH1288> down<MH1288> outside<MH4480, 2351> the city<MH5892b> by the well<MH875> of water<MH4325> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>when it was evening<MH6153>, the time<MH6256> when women go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to draw<MH7579> water<MH7579>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of my master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>, please<MH4994> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>grant<MH7136a> me success<MH7136a> today<MH3117>, and show<MH6213a> kindness<MH2617a> to my master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, I am standing<MH5324> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>spring<MH5871a>, and the daughters<MH1323> of the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> are coming<MH3318> out<MH3318> to draw<MH7579> water<MH4325>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>now may it be that the young<MH5291> woman<MH5291> to whom<MH834> I say<MH559>, ‘Please<MH4994> let<MH5186> down<MH5186> your jar<MH3537> so that I may drink<MH8354>,’ and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>who answers<MH559>, ‘Drink<MH8354>, and I will water<MH8248> your camels<MH1581> also<MH1571>’—<i>may</i> she <i>be the one</i> whom You have appointed<MH3198> for Your servant<MH5650> Isaac<MH3327>; and by this I will know<MH3045> that You have shown<MH6213a> kindness<MH2617a> to my master<MH113>.” <p class="hdg">Rebekah Is Chosen</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And it came about, before<MH2962> he had finished<MH3615> speaking<MH1696>, that behold<MH2009>, Rebekah<MH7259>, who<MH834> was born<MH3205> to Bethuel<MH1328a> the son<MH1121> of Milcah<MH4435>, the wife<MH802> of Abraham’s<MH85> brother<MH251> Nahor<MH5152>, came<MH3318> out<MH3318> with her jar<MH3537> on her shoulder<MH7926>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The young<MH5291> woman<MH5291> was very<MH3966> beautiful<MH2896a>, a virgin<MH1330>; no<MH3808> man<MH376> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>had<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with her. She went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the spring<MH5871a>, filled<MH4390> her jar<MH3537>, and came<MH5927> up<MH5927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the servant<MH5650> ran<MH7323> to meet<MH7122> her, and said<MH559>, “Please<MH4994> let me drink<MH1572> a little<MH4592> water<MH4325> from your jar<MH3537>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And she said<MH559>, “Drink<MH8354>, my lord<MH113>”; then she quickly<MH4116> lowered<MH3381> her jar<MH3537> to her hand<MH3027>, and gave<MH8248> him a<MH8248> drink<MH8248>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now when she had finished<MH3615> giving<MH8248> him a<MH8248> drink<MH8248>, she said<MH559>, “I will also<MH1571> draw<MH7579> <i>water</i> for your camels<MH1581> until<MH5704, 518> they have finished<MH3615> drinking<MH8354>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So she quickly<MH4116> emptied<MH6168> her jar<MH3537> into the trough<MH8268>, and ran<MH7323> back<MH5750> to the well<MH875> to draw<MH7579>, and she drew<MH7579> for all<MH3605> his camels<MH1581>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Meanwhile, the man<MH376> was taking<MH7583> a<MH7583> close<MH7583> look<MH7583> at her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>in<MH2790b> silence<MH2790b>, to find<MH3045> out<MH3045> whether the LORD<MH3068> had made<MH6743b> his journey<MH1870> successful<MH6743b> or<MH518> not. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> the camels<MH1581> had finished<MH3615> drinking<MH8354>, the man<MH376> took<MH3947> a gold<MH2091> ring<MH5141> weighing<MH4948> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>half-shekel<MH1235>, and two<MH8147> bracelets<MH6781a> for her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>wrists<MH3027> weighing<MH4948> ten<MH6235> shekels in gold<MH2091>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and he said<MH559>, “Whose<MH4310> daughter<MH1323> are you? Please<MH4994> tell<MH5046> me, is<MH3426> there<MH3426> room<MH4725> for us to stay<MH3885a> overnight<MH3885a> at your father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>She said<MH559> to him, “I am the daughter<MH1323> of Bethuel<MH1328a>, Milcah’s<MH4435> son<MH1121>, whom<MH834> she bore<MH3205> to Nahor<MH5152>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Again she said<MH559> to him, “We have plenty<MH7227a> of both<MH1571> straw<MH8401> and feed<MH4554>, and room<MH4725> to stay<MH3885a> overnight<MH3885a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then the man<MH376> bowed<MH6915> low<MH6915> and worshiped<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of my master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>, who<MH834> has not abandoned<MH5800a> His kindness<MH2617a> and His trustworthiness<MH571> toward<MH4480, 5973> my master<MH113>; as for me, the LORD<MH3068> has guided<MH5148> me in the way<MH1870> to the house<MH1004> of my master’s<MH113> brothers<MH251>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then the young<MH5291> woman<MH5291> ran<MH7323> and told<MH5046> her mother’s<MH517> household<MH1004> about these<MH428> things<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now Rebekah<MH7259> had a brother<MH251> whose name<MH8034> was Laban<MH3837a>; and Laban<MH3837a> ran<MH7323> outside<MH2351> to the man<MH376> at the spring<MH5871a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>When he saw<MH7200> the ring<MH5141> and the bracelets<MH6781a> on his sister’s<MH269> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>wrists<MH3027>, and when he heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of his sister<MH269> Rebekah<MH7259>, saying<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the man<MH376> said<MH1696> to me,” he went<MH935> to the man<MH376>; and behold<MH2009>, he was standing<MH5975> by the camels<MH1581> at the spring<MH5871a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “Come<MH935> in<MH935>, blessed<MH1288> of the LORD<MH3068>! Why<MH4100> do you stand<MH5975> outside<MH2351>, since I have prepared<MH6437> the house<MH1004>, and a place<MH4725> for the camels<MH1581>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So the man<MH376> entered<MH935> the house<MH1004>. Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Laban unloaded<MH6605a> the camels<MH1581>, and he gave<MH5414> straw<MH8401> and feed<MH4554> to the camels<MH1581>, and water<MH4325> to wash<MH7364> his feet<MH7272> and the feet<MH7272> of the men<MH376> who<MH834> were with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But when <i>food</i> was set<MH7760> before<MH6440> him to eat<MH398>, he said<MH559>, “I will not eat<MH398> until<MH5704, 518> I have stated<MH1696> my business<MH1697>.” And he said<MH559>, “Speak<MH1696> on.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>So he said<MH559>, “I am Abraham’s<MH85> servant<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> has greatly<MH3966> blessed<MH1288> my master<MH113>, so that he has become<MH1431> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>rich<MH1431>; and He has given<MH5414> him flocks<MH6629> and herds<MH1241>, and silver<MH3701> and gold<MH2091>, and servants<MH5650> and slave<MH8198> women<MH8198>, and camels<MH1581> and donkeys<MH2543>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Now my master’s<MH113> wife<MH802> Sarah<MH8283> bore<MH3205> a son<MH1121> to my master<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>in her old<MH2209> age<MH2209>, and he has given<MH5414> him all<MH3605> that he has. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>My master<MH113> made me swear<MH7650>, saying<MH559>, ‘You shall not take<MH3947> a wife<MH802> for my son<MH1121> from the daughters<MH1323> of the Canaanites<MH3669a>, in whose<MH834> land<MH776> I live<MH3427>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>but you shall go<MH1980> to my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> and to my relatives<MH4940>, and take<MH3947> a wife<MH802> for my son<MH1121>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Then I said<MH559> to my master<MH113>, ‘Suppose<MH194> the woman<MH802> does not follow<MH1980, 310> me.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to me, ‘The LORD<MH3068>, before<MH6440> whom<MH834> I have walked<MH1980>, will send<MH7971> His angel<MH4397> with you to make<MH6743b> your journey<MH1870> successful<MH6743b>, and you will take<MH3947> a wife<MH802> for my son<MH1121> from my relatives<MH4940> and from my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>then<MH227> you will be<MH5352> free<MH5352> from my oath<MH423>, when<MH3588> you come<MH935> to my relatives<MH4940>; and if<MH518> they do not give<MH5414> her to you, you will be free<MH5355a> from my oath<MH423>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>“So I came<MH935> today<MH3117> to the spring<MH5871a>, and said<MH559>, ‘LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of my master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>, if<MH518> now<MH4994> You will make<MH6743b> my journey<MH1870> on which<MH834> I have been going<MH1980> successful<MH6743b>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>behold<MH2009>, I am standing<MH5324> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>spring<MH5871a>, and may it be that the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>young<MH5959> unmarried<MH5959> woman<MH5959> who comes<MH3318> out<MH3318> to draw<MH7579> <i>water,</i> and to whom I say<MH559>, “Please<MH4994> let<MH8248> me drink<MH8248> a little<MH4592> water<MH4325> from your jar<MH3537>”; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>and she says<MH559> to me, “You drink<MH8354>, and I will draw<MH7579> for your camels<MH1581> also<MH1571>”—let her be the woman<MH802> whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has appointed<MH3198> for my master’s<MH113> son<MH1121>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>“Before<MH2962> I had finished<MH3615> speaking<MH1696> in my heart<MH3820>, behold<MH2009>, Rebekah<MH7259> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> with her jar<MH3537> on her shoulder<MH7926>, and went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the spring<MH5871a> and drew<MH7579> <i>water,</i> and I said<MH559> to her, ‘Please<MH4994> let<MH8248> me drink<MH8248>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>She quickly<MH4116> lowered<MH3381> her jar<MH3537> from her <i>shoulder,</i> and said<MH559>, ‘Drink<MH8354>, and I will water<MH8248> your camels<MH1581> also<MH1571>’; so I drank<MH8354>, and she watered<MH8248> the camels<MH1581> also<MH1571>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Then I asked<MH7592> her, and said<MH559>, ‘Whose<MH4310> daughter<MH1323> are you?’ And she said<MH559>, ‘The daughter<MH1323> of Bethuel<MH1328a>, Nahor’s<MH5152> son<MH1121>, whom<MH834> Milcah<MH4435> bore<MH3205> to him’; and I put<MH7760> the ring<MH5141> on her nose<MH639>, and the bracelets<MH6781a> on her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>wrists<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And I bowed<MH6915> low<MH6915> and worshiped<MH2331c> the LORD<MH3068>, and blessed<MH1288> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of my master<MH113> Abraham<MH85>, who<MH834> had guided<MH5148> me in the right<MH571> way<MH1870> to take<MH3947> the daughter<MH1323> of my master’s<MH113> brother<MH251> for his son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> if<MH518> you are<MH3426> going<MH3426> to<MH3426> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>deal<MH6213a> kindly<MH2617a> and truthfully<MH571> with my master<MH113>, tell<MH5046> me; and if<MH518> not, tell<MH5046> me now<MH5046>, so that I may turn<MH6437> to the right<MH3225> or<MH176> the left<MH8040>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>Then Laban<MH3837a> and Bethuel<MH1328a> replied<MH6030a>, “The matter<MH1697> has come<MH3318> from the LORD<MH3068>; <i>so</i> we cannot<MH3201, 3808> speak<MH1696> to you bad<MH7451a> or<MH176> good<MH2896a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>Here<MH2009> is Rebekah<MH7259> before<MH6440> you, take<MH3947> <i>her</i> and go<MH1980>, and let her be the wife<MH802> of your master’s<MH113> son<MH1121>, as the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> Abraham’s<MH85> servant<MH5650> heard<MH8085> their words<MH1697>, he bowed<MH2331c> himself to the ground<MH776> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>before the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/24-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>And the servant<MH5650> brought<MH3318> out<MH3318> articles<MH3627> of silver<MH3701> and articles<MH3627> of gold<MH2091>, and garments<MH899b>, and gave<MH5414> them to Rebekah<MH7259>;
