If You wish, I will make here three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>While yet he was speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud saying, “This is My Son, the beloved, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the disciples having heard <i>it</i>, fell upon their face and were greatly terrified. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Jesus having come to <i>them</i> and having touched them, said, <span class="red">“Rise up, and do not be afraid.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And <i>as</i> they were descending from the mountain, Jesus instructed them, saying, <span class="red">“Tell to no one the vision, until the Son of Man is risen out from <i>the</i> dead.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that it behooves Elijah to come first?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And answering He said, <span class="red">“Elijah indeed comes and will restore all things. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But I say to you that Elijah already is come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they desired. Thus also, the Son of Man is about to suffer from them.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them concerning John the Baptist. </p><p class="hdg">The Boy with a Demon<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 9:14-29; Luke 9:37-42; Luke 17:5-10)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they having come to the crowd, a man came to Him kneeling down to Him <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic and suffers miserably; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And I brought him Your to disciples, and they were not able to heal him.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus answering said, <span class="red">“O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out from him, and the boy was healed from that hour. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the disciples, having come to Jesus in private, said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And He said to them, <span class="red">“Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. And nothing will be impossible for you.”</span><span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="See Mark 9:29. BYZ and TR include ‘21 But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.’">a</a></span> </p><p class="hdg">The Second Prediction of the Passion<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 9:30-32; Luke 9:43-45)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And <i>while</i> they were abiding in Galilee, Jesus said to them, <span class="red">“The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into <i>the</i> hands of men, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and they will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.”</span> And they were deeply grieved. </p><p class="hdg">The Temple Tax</p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And they having come to Capernaum, those collecting the didrachmas came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher pay the didrachmas?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>He says, “Yes.”</p><p class="reg"> And he having entered into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, <span class="red">“What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive custom or tribute? From their sons, or from strangers?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And he having said, “From the strangers,” Jesus said to him, <span class="red">“Then the sons are free. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/17-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But that we might not offend them, having gone to the sea, cast a hook and take the first fish having come up, and having opened its mouth, you will find a stater.<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="A silver coin worth four drachmas or approximately one shekel">b</a></span> Having taken that, give <i>it</i> to them for Me and yourself.”</span><A name="fn"><br /><br /></p><A name="fna"></a><span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <span class="fnverse">20</span> <span class="footnote">See Mark 9:29.
