Because of the short muon lifetime, only a small fraction of stored beam particles will contribute to the physics output, while most of the muons will decay in the collider ring. The resulting power carried by decay electrons and positrons can amount to hundreds of Watt per meter. Dedicated shielding configurations are needed for protecting the superconducting magnets against the decay-induced heat and radiation damage. In this paper, we present generic shielding studies for two different collider options (3 TeV and 10 TeV), which are presently being explored by the International Muon Collider Collaboration. We show that the key parameter for the shielding design is the heat deposition in the magnet cold mass, which will be an important cost factor for facility operation due to the associated power consumption.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Nuclear elastic scattering of protons below 250 MeV in FLUKA v4-4.0 and its role in single-event-upset production in electronics

FLUKA is among the general-purpose codes for the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport that are routinely employed to estimate the production of single-event-upsets (SEUs) in commercial static random access memories (SRAMs) exposed to radiation. Earlier studies concerning the production of SEUs in commercial SRAMs under proton irradiation revealed very good agreement between experimental measurements and FLUKA estimates of the SEU production cross section for proton energies above 20-30 MeV. However, at lower proton energies, where the cross section for SEU production in such low-critical-charge components increases drastically, a FLUKA underestimation of up to two orders of magnitude was observed. Preliminary analyses indicated that this underestimation was in great measure due to the lack of nuclear elastic scattering of protons below 10 MeV in FLUKA up to version 4-3.4. To overcome this limitation, a new model for the nuclear elastic scattering of protons has been developed, combining partial-wave analyses and experimental angular distributions. This newly developed model has been included in FLUKA v4-4.0, and leads to an order-of-magnitude improvement in the agreement between FLUKA and experimental cross sections for the production of SEUs in SRAMs under proton irradiation in the 1-10 MeV energy domain.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2312.12300</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:2312.12300']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2312.12300</dc:hasVersion>

Simulation framework and measurements of crystal collimation of proton beams at the Large Hadron Collider

Thanks to its versatility in deploying large kicks with high efficiency, crystal channeling is being integrated more and more into modern particle accelerators. For example, at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, crystals are used, or planned to be used for collimation and fixed-target opportunities for the Physics Beyond Colliders studies. In order to predict and optimize the performance in present and future applications, it is very important to have reliable simulation tools that integrate the crystal effects on the beam with multi-turn tracking. This work shows the setup of a simulation including magnetic tracking, detailed aperture models, particle-matter interactions as well as coherent physics processes in the crystals, using the coupling between SixTrack and FLUKA. A series of simulation tool benchmarks for collimation of multi-TeV protons has been carried out with LHC data.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Fragmented High-Energy Heavy-Ion Beams for Electronics Testing

Fragmented heavy-ion beams obtained from the interaction of highly energetic ions with thick targets relative to the ion ranges are proposed to mimic the high-penetration linear energy transfer (LET) spectrum present in space and for electronics testing. Recent experimental results have shown that new important radionuclide beams could be produced such as Pb-nat(p,x)Hg-208 in thick lead targets. We introduce in this note calculations of the production yield of isotopes generated from the creation and re-interaction of 伪 particles in thick lead, bismuth, thorium and uranium targets irradiated by the 1.4 GeV proton beam delivered from the CERN PS Booster at ISOLDE. It gives the production yields of several isotopes that are not directly predicted with FLUKA and its RESNUCLEI production card while keeping a reasonable CPU time. These isotopes are particularly produced from (伪, xp) and (3H, yp) reactions, with x = 4, 5, 6 and y = 3, 4, 5. The production yields have been calculated for Pb-208, Bi-209, Th-232 and U-238 target nuclei. The TENDL-2019 library has been used to recover the production cross-sections together with the afore-mentioned version of FLUKA to score the 伪 and 3H fluences. The calculation method was verified with the FLUKA predictions for the Bi-209(伪,2n) reaction and the At-211 production yield, an isotope of high interest in nuclear medicine, as well as with the radionuclides which are produced via (3H,3p) and (伪,2p) reactions. The computation and experimental data are in good agreement, providing an alternative method to evaluate the inventories of radionuclides of potential interest for target waste management, and for the physics and medical programs at ISOLDE and MEDICIS.

CERN.
