The main goal of this research is to examine the impact of using the social media on the academic performance. The new social networks, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., can affect the behavior and academic performance of the universities' students; therefore the selected universities were Ahlia University, Applied Science University and University of Bahrain. The sample was (150) students distributed equally among the three universities. The research questions will answer (1) what is the evolution of ICTs and the Internet in the World; (2) what is the impact caused by ICT in education; (3) what are the effects of social media on the academic performance of students at Bahrain Universities; (4) what are the social networking sites that are more popular among students at Bahrain Universities. The results show that the social media has a positive impact on academic performance and 57% of students prefer the mobile application WhatsApp as a social media for their academic purpose.

Socio-demographic Factors of The Child Injuries in an Urban Slum

Appears in:

sis 17(13): e3

Author:

Noor Riffat Ara

Abstract:

A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted among the children aged 16years and below at Tejgaon slum in Dhaka city during January’2015 to December’2015. Aiming to ascertain the factors associated with child injuries. Data were collected using random sampling technique. The total number of the injured children under study were 234. Nearly halves of participants were between 1-4 years and 13-16 years of age and 33% were in 5-8 years of age. The mean age was 8.39 ± 4.64 years and Male – female ratio was 1:1.5. The highest injury rate was observed between 5-8 years in male (53.8%) and the lowest in 9-12 years (20%) which did not vary with respect to sex. And 75% injured children, 71% mothers and 90% fathers were illiterate and 46% mothers were housewife. Female children were more prone to injury,53%. Halves of them occurred at their own house. More than 50% were with low-income within 2000TK-3000TK. Adequate intervention is needed for prevention of injury to children.

Proposing a streaming Big Data analytics (SBDA) platform for condition based maintenance (CBM) and monitoring transportation systems

Appears in:

sis 17(13): e4

Author:

Jamal Maktoubian

Abstract:

Statistics demonstrate that public transportation plays a significant role in people’s movement in metropolises. However, transit systems are aging and are facing rising maintenance costs. Technologies such as Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) could be used in order to monitor performance conditions of transportation and industrial assets in real-time to detect when and what maintenance is required. CBMs could help to identify risk scenarios in real-time, enhance reliability, reduce call out costs, increase productivity, and better asset functioning visibility. Since the high volume of maintenance data is generated from the different source, managing assets conditions with traditional inspection system such as planned maintenance (PM) is impossible. Therefore, providing a comprehensive performance management program is essential. My research is motivated by interesting challenges increasing from the growing size, variety, and complexity of maintenance data in CBM systems. This paper presents a knowledge-based approach of CBM using streaming big data analysis (SBDA) in order to solve real-time big data management, storage and computation challenges and predictive data analytics in CBM systems. This platform could detect changes in asset’s behavior before they stop.

A Scalable Architecture for Secured Access to Distributed Services

Appears in:

sis 17(13): e5

Author:

Telesphore Tiendrebeogo

Abstract:

Web services which are an implementation of Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), are emergent technologies and promising the development, the deployment and the integration of Internet applications. They are initially based on three main layers that are SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), WSDL (Web Service Description Language) and UDDI(Universal Description, Discovery and Integration). The used language which underlies these protocols is XML (eXtensible Markup Language), what returns Web Services independent from platforms and from programming languages. Web service discovery is a procedure which consists to obtain descriptions of Web services based on the requirements functional or not functional. In this context, we propose, new architecture which replaces SOAP and UDDI to o er a secured discovery and access to the Web services. The unified protocol allowing the secured discovery and access to the Web services is called: Secured Access Protocol for Distributed Services (SAPDS). It is based on a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) defined in the hyperbolic space from the Poincaré disk model. However, users keep obtaining beforehand a WSDL file associated with a key of access to the service. This paper presents SAPDS as an intermediary third to store and discover Web services by using a Service of Storage and Discovery Tree (SSDT).

Lifetime measure of dense and sparse topology sensor network in structural health monitoring

Appears in:

sis 17(13): e6

Authors:

M. The monitoring system consists of a large number of sensor nodes for collecting structural health information. Out of many topologies, the sparse topology was extensively used in sensor network applications. The lifetime of the wireless sensor network is a fundamental issue because it determines the whole system aliveness. The objective of this article is to investigate the network lifetime and compare the computational results of different kinds of topology construction protocols to find optimum lifetime protocol for extending the monitoring system lifetime. The proposed dense network is capable of turnoff unnecessary node and provides the maximum sensing region, which prolong the network lifetime with minimum cost compare to sparse. In the proposed approach, each sensor node dynamically adjust transmission rage with keeping maximum connectivity and minimum consumption. The result shows that the dense topology would be a good choice for monitoring building structural health damage.

Scope

As the data volumes continue to increase and the ways of information dispersion across the globe continue to diversify, new scalable methods and structures are needed for efficiently processing those distributed and autonomous data.
