great diversity in the composition of people in organizations. Diversity management is therefore key to create growth in today’s competitive global marketplace. This work develops a literature review related to the existing models for managing diversity covering the period from 1980 until 2014. Furthermore, it identifies limitations in previous models. More specifically, the literature review reveals that there is a lack of information about how these models can be adapted from the headquarters to the subsidiaries. Therefore, the contribution of this paper is to suggest how the models should be adapted when they are directed to host countries. Our aim is to highlight the limitations of the developed models with regards to the translation of the diversity management practices to the subsidiaries. Accordingly, a model that will enable MNCs to ensure a global strategy is suggested. Taking advantage of the potential incorporated in a culturally diverse work team should be at the top of every international company’s aims. Executives from headquarters need to use different attitudes when transferring diversity practices towards their subsidiaries. Further studies should reassess local practices of diversity management to find out how this universal management model is translated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture%20diversity" title="culture diversity">culture diversity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diversity%20management" title=" diversity management"> diversity management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resources%20management" title=" human resources management"> human resources management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MNCs" title=" MNCs"> MNCs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=subsidiaries" title=" subsidiaries"> subsidiaries</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=workforce%20diversity" title=" workforce diversity"> workforce diversity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42557/managing-diversity-in-mncs-a-literature-review-of-existing-strategic-models-for-managing-diversity-and-a-roadmap-to-transfer-them-to-the-subsidiaries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42557.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">255</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26</span> Historic Urban Landscape Approach, a Methodology to Elaborate Sustainable Development Plans through Culture and Heritage: The Case Study of Valverde de Burguillos (Spain)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julia%20Rey%20Perez">Julia Rey Perez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Victoria%20Dominguez%20Ruiz"> Victoria Dominguez Ruiz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The phenomenon of depopulation puts the authorities at risk of abandoning a number of rural-urban areas of significant cultural value, affecting their architecture and intangible cultural heritage. The purpose of this research is to present a methodology created according to the UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), which through the identification of cultural values and attributes, leads to ´Strategic Plans´ build upon the culture and heritage. This methodology is based on the analysis of the town from three perspectives: 1) from the public administration, 2) from the discipline of architecture, and 3) from citizen perception. In order to be able to work on the development of a diagnosis from three very different approaches, collaborative cartographies have been used as working tools. The methodology discussed was applied in Valverde de Burguillos, in Spain, leading to the construction of an inclusive ‘Strategic Plan’ that integrates the management of the town within the overall territorial development plan. The importance of incorporating culture and heritage as a conductor for sustainable urban development through the HUL approach has allowed the local authorities to assume these new tools for heritage conservation, acknowledging community participation as the main element for the ´Strategic Plan” elaboration. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rural%20heritage" title="rural heritage">rural heritage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=citizen%20participation" title=" citizen participation"> citizen participation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclusiveness" title=" inclusiveness"> inclusiveness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20governance" title=" urban governance"> urban governance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UNESCO" title=" UNESCO"> UNESCO</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/130832/historic-urban-landscape-approach-a-methodology-to-elaborate-sustainable-development-plans-through-culture-and-heritage-the-case-study-of-valverde-de-burguillos-spain" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/130832.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">139</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">25</span> The Role of Group Size, Public Employees’ Wages and Control Corruption Institutions in a Game-Theoretical Model of Public Corruption</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pablo%20J.%20Valverde">Pablo J. The theoretical model includes variables such as the public employee wage (w), a control corruption parameter (c), and the group size of interactions (GS) between clusters of public officers and contractors. The system behavior is analyzed using phase diagrams based on combinations of such parameters (c, w, GS). Numerical simulations are implemented in order to contrast analytic results based on Nash equilibria of the theoretical model. Major findings include the functional relationship between wages and network topology, which attempts to reduce the emergence of corrupt behavior. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=public%20corruption" title="public corruption">public corruption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=game%20theory" title=" game theory"> game theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=complex%20systems" title=" complex systems"> complex systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nash%20equilibrium." title=" Nash equilibrium."> Nash equilibrium.</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100402/the-role-of-group-size-public-employees-wages-and-control-corruption-institutions-in-a-game-theoretical-model-of-public-corruption" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100402.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">242</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">24</span> Different Levels of Mixed Reality: Mixed Reality as a Tool to Change the Visitor&#039;s Experience in the Museum</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hector%20Valverde%20Mart%C3%ADnez">Hector Valverde Martínez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this text, the application possibilities of developments in MR are explored as an element within the museographic space that affects the visitor-museum relationship to satisfy the needs of knowledge and recreation that visitors have to improve the experience. The research develops a public corruption model in a game theory framework. Theoretical results suggest a series of 'optimal settings' of model's exogenous parameters that boost the emergence of corruption. The paper contrasts these outcomes with probabilistic inference results based on BNs adjusted over simulated microdata. Principal findings indicate that probabilistic reasoning based on BNs significantly improves parameter specification and causal analysis in a public corruption game. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bayesian%20networks" title="Bayesian networks">Bayesian networks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=probabilistic%20reasoning" title=" probabilistic reasoning"> probabilistic reasoning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=public%20corruption" title=" public corruption"> public corruption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=theoretical%20games" title=" theoretical games"> theoretical games</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100412/probabilistic-approach-to-contrast-theoretical-predictions-from-a-public-corruption-game-using-bayesian-networks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/100412.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">210</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> Pueblos Mágicos in Mexico: The Loss of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Cultural Tourism</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudia%20Rodriguez-Espinosa">Claudia Rodriguez-Espinosa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erika%20Elizabeth%20P%C3%A9rez%20M%C3%BAzquiz"> Erika Elizabeth Pérez Múzquiz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Since the creation of the “Pueblos Mágicos” program in 2001, a series of social and cultural events had directly affected the heritage conservation of the 121 registered localities until 2018, when the federal government terminated the program. Many studies have been carried out that seek to analyze from different perspectives and disciplines the consequences that these appointments have generated in the “Pueblos Mágicos.” Multidisciplinary groups such as the one headed by Carmen Valverde and Liliana López Levi, have brought together specialists from all over the Mexican Republic to create a set of diagnoses of most of these settlements, and although each one has unique specificities, there is a constant in most of them that has to do with the loss of cultural heritage and that is related to transculturality. There are several factors identified that have fostered a cultural loss, as a direct reflection of the economic crisis that prevails in Mexico. It is important to remember that the origin of this program had as its main objective to promote the growth and development of local economies since one of the conditions for entering the program is that they have less than 20,000 inhabitants. With this goal in mind, one of the first actions that many “Pueblos Mágicos” carried out was to improve or create an infrastructure to receive both national and foreign tourists since this was practically non-existent. Creating hotels, restaurants, cafes, training certified tour guides, among other actions, have led to one of the great problems they face: globalization. Although by itself it is not bad, its impact in many cases has been negative for heritage conservation. The entry into and contact with new cultures has led to the undervaluation of cultural traditions, their transformation and even their total loss. This work seeks to present specific cases of transformation and loss of cultural heritage, as well as to reflect on the problem and propose scenarios in which the negative effects can be reversed. For this text, 36 “Pueblos Mágicos” have been selected for study, based on those settlements that are cited in volumes I and IV (the first and last of the collection) of the series produced by the multidisciplinary group led by Carmen Valverde and Liliana López Levi (researchers from UNAM and UAM Xochimilco respectively) in the project supported by CONACyT entitled “Pueblos Mágicos. An interdisciplinary vision”, of which we are part. This sample is considered representative since it forms 30% of the total of 121 “Pueblos Mágicos” existing at that moment. With this information, the elements of its intangible heritage loss or transformation have been identified in every chapter based on the texts written by the participants of that project. Finally, this text shows an analysis of the effects that this federal program, as a public policy applied to 132 populations, has had on the conservation or transformation of the intangible cultural heritage of the “Pueblos Mágicos.” Transculturality, globalization, the creation of identities and the desire to increase the flow of tourists have impacted the changes that traditions (main intangible cultural heritage) have had in the 18 years that the federal program lasted. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=public%20policies" title="public policies">public policies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20tourism" title=" cultural tourism"> cultural tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heritage%20preservation" title=" heritage preservation"> heritage preservation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pueblos%20m%C3%A1gicos%20program" title=" pueblos mágicos program"> pueblos mágicos program</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141805/pueblos-magicos-in-mexico-the-loss-of-intangible-cultural-heritage-and-cultural-tourism" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141805.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">190</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">21</span> Sustainability Adoption Barriers in Small and Mid-size Enterprises (SEMs)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=L.Vaz">L.Vaz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=L.%20Ferreira"> L. The articles were analyzed, and four main clusters emerged in the literature: 1) sustainability and small and medium-sized companies; 2) sustainable business models; 3) sustainability practices adoption procedures, and 4) adoption difficulties on sustainability practices. Utilizing interviews as a methodology, the article seeks to strengthen knowledge regarding sustainability practices, their barriers and the sustainable procedures adopted by SMEs in a Portuguese context. The results demonstrate that the literature agrees with this case study, where there are numerous sustainable practices, yet, due to financial, political, cultural, and technological factors, barriers emerge in the adoption process. By comparing the literature findings with the conducted interviews of interior Portuguese SMEs, this article develops a contribution to the scientific community through a captivating, intuitive and motivating way. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=barriers" title="barriers">barriers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=practices" title=" practices"> practices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=business%20model" title=" business model"> business model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green" title=" green"> green</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141711/sustainability-adoption-barriers-in-small-and-mid-size-enterprises-sems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141711.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">183</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">20</span> Ex Vivo Permeation Comparison Study of Flurbiprofen from Nanoparticles through Human Skin</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sheimah%20El%20Bejjaji">Sheimah El Bejjaji</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lara%20Gorsek"> Lara Gorsek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chandler%20Quilchez"> Chandler Quilchez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joaquim%20Su%C3%B1er"> Joaquim Suñer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mireia%20Mallandrich"> Mireia Mallandrich</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Flurbiprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug used in several treatments. The purpose of this study was to compare the permeation of two different formulations of flurbiprofen through the human skin. The first formulation was a solution of flurbiprofen dissolved with polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350). The second formulation was flurbiprofen encapsulated in poly-ɛ-caprolactone (PɛCL) nanoparticles (NPs), stabilized with poloxamer 188, submitted individually for freeze-drying with PEG 3350 as a cryoprotectant and sterilized by gamma-irradiation. Human skin was obtained from the abdominal region of a healthy patient. The experimental protocol was approved by the Bioethics Committee of Barcelona SCIAS Hospital (Spain), and they obtained the written informed consent forms. After being frozen to -20ºC, the skin samples were cut with a dermatome at 400 µm. The ex vivo permeation study was performed in Franz diffusion cells with a diffusion area of 2.54 cm². Skin samples were placed between two compartment sites, the dermal side in contact with the receptor medium and the epidermis side in contact with the donor chamber to which the formulation was applied. The permeation study was conducted for 24 hours at 32 ± 0.5 °C in accordance with sink conditions. The results were analyzed with an unpaired t-test, and the p-values indicate the formulation with nanoparticles had a higher permeability coefficient, flux, partition parameter, diffusion parameter, and lag time. The applicability of this formulation topically can benefit articulations and ligament inflammation as an alternative to oral drugs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anti-inflammatory%20drug" title="anti-inflammatory drug">anti-inflammatory drug</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flurbiprofen" title=" flurbiprofen"> flurbiprofen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20skin" title=" human skin"> human skin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoparticles" title=" nanoparticles"> nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skin%20permeation" title=" skin permeation"> skin permeation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166410/ex-vivo-permeation-comparison-study-of-flurbiprofen-from-nanoparticles-through-human-skin" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166410.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">90</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">19</span> Brain Computer Interface Implementation for Affective Computing Sensing: Classifiers Comparison</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ram%C3%B3n%20Aparicio-Garc%C3%ADa">Ramón Aparicio-García</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gustavo%20Ju%C3%A1rez%20Gracia"> Gustavo Juárez Gracia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jes%C3%BAs%20%C3%81lvarez%20Cedillo"> Jesús Álvarez Cedillo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A research line of the computer science that involve the study of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which search to recognize and interpret the user intent by the storage and the subsequent analysis of the electrical signals of the brain, for using them in the control of electronic devices. We used images of meteors entering the atmosphere at night between 8:00 p.m.-5: 00 a.m. The objective of this project is to classify meteor and star images (with stars as the image background). The monitoring of the sky and the classification of meteors are made for future applications by scientists. The image database was collected from different websites. We worked with RGB-type images with dimensions of 220x220 pixels stored in the BitMap Protocol (BMP) format. Subsequent window scanning and processing were carried out for each image. The scan window where the characteristics were extracted had the size of 20x20 pixels with a scanning step size of 10 pixels. Brightness, contrast and contour orientation histograms were used as inputs for the RSC. The RSC worked with two classes and classified into: 1) with meteors and 2) without meteors. Different tests were carried out by varying the number of training cycles and the number of images for training and recognition. The percentage error for the neural classifier was calculated. The results show a good RSC classifier response with 89% correct recognition. The results of these experiments are presented and discussed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=contour%20orientation%20histogram" title="contour orientation histogram">contour orientation histogram</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=meteors" title=" meteors"> meteors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=night%20sky" title=" night sky"> night sky</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RSC%20neural%20classifier" title=" RSC neural classifier"> RSC neural classifier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stars" title=" stars "> stars </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136153/random-subspace-neural-classifier-for-meteor-recognition-in-the-night-sky" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136153.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">139</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Preparation and Characterization of Iron/Titanium-Pillared Clays</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rezala%20Houria">Rezala Houria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Valverde%20Jose%20Luis"> Valverde Jose Luis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Romero%20Amaya"> Romero Amaya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Molinari%20Alessandra"> Molinari Alessandra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maldotti%20Andrea"> Maldotti Andrea</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The escalation of oil prices in 1973 confronted the oil industry with the problem of how to maximize the processing of crude oil, especially the heavy fractions, to give gasoline components. Strong impetus was thus given to the development of catalysts with relatively large pore sizes, which were able to deal with larger molecules than the existing molecular sieves, and with good thermal and hydrothermal stability. The oil embargo in 1973 therefore acted as a stimulus for the investigation and development of pillared clays. Iron doped titania-pillared montmorillonite clays was prepared using bentonite from deposits of Maghnia in western-Algeria. The preparation method consists of differents steps (purification of the raw bentonite, preparation of a pillaring agent solution and exchange of the cations located between the clay layers with the previously formed iron/titanium solution). The characterization of this material was carried out by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, textural measures by BET method, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV visible spectroscopy, temperature- programmed desorption of ammonia and atomic absorption.This new material was investigated as photocatalyst for selective oxygenation of the liquid alkylaromatics such as: toluene, paraxylene and orthoxylene and the photocatalytic properties of it were compared with those of the titanium-pillared clays. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=iron%20doping" title="iron doping">iron doping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=montmorillonite%20clays" title=" montmorillonite clays"> montmorillonite clays</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pillared%20clays" title=" pillared clays"> pillared clays</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oil%20industry" title=" oil industry"> oil industry</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18243/preparation-and-characterization-of-irontitanium-pillared-clays" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18243.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">302</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> Distribution of Current Emerging Contaminants in South Africa Surface and Groundwater </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jou-An%20Chen">Jou-An Chen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julio%20%20Castillo"> Julio Castillo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Errol%20Duncan%20Cason"> Errol Duncan Cason</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gabre%20Kemp"> Gabre Kemp</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Leana%20Esterhuizen"> Leana Esterhuizen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angel%20Valverde%20Portal"> Angel Valverde Portal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Esta%20Van%20Heerden"> Esta Van Heerden</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Emerging contaminants (EC) such as pharmaceutical and personal care products have been accumulating for years in water bodies all over the world. However, very little is known about the occurrences, levels, and effects of ECs in South African water resources. This study provides an initial assessment of the distribution of eight ECs (Acetaminophen, Atrazine, Terbuthlyazine, Carbamazepine, Phenyton, Sulfmethoxazole, Nevirapine and Fluconozole) in fifteen water sources from the Free State and Easter Cape provinces of South Africa. Overall, the physiochemical conditions were different in surface and groundwater samples, with concentrations of several elements such as B, Ca, Mg, Na, NO3, and TDS been statistically higher in groundwater. In contrast, ECs levels, quantified at ng/mL using the LC/MS/ESI, were much lower in groundwater samples. The ECs with higher contamination levels were Carbamazepine, Sulfmethoxazole, Nevirapine, and Terbuthlyazine, while the most widespread were Sulfmethoxazole and Fluconozole, detected in all surface and groundwater samples. Fecal and E. coli tests indicated that surface water was more contaminated than groundwater. Microbial communities, assessed using NGS, were dominated by the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, in both surface and groundwater. Actinobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Cyanobacteria, were more dominant in surface water, while Verrucomicrobia were overrepresented in groundwater. In conclusion, ECs contamination is closely associated with human activities (human wastes). The microbial diversity identified can suggest possible biodegradation processes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emerging%20contaminants" title="emerging contaminants">emerging contaminants</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EC" title=" EC"> EC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personal%20care%20products" title=" personal care products"> personal care products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pharmaceuticals" title=" pharmaceuticals"> pharmaceuticals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20attenuation%20process" title=" natural attenuation process"> natural attenuation process</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79504/distribution-of-current-emerging-contaminants-in-south-africa-surface-and-groundwater" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79504.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">219</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">15</span> Evaluation of Corrosion Behaviour of Austenitic Steel 08Cr18Ni10Ti Exposed to Supercritical Water</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monika%20%C5%A0%C3%ADpov%C3%A1">Monika Šípová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniela%20Maru%C5%A1%C3%A1kov%C3%A1"> Daniela Marušáková</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudia%20Aparicio"> Claudia Aparicio</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> New sources and ways of producing energy are still seeking, and one of the sustainable ways is Generation IV nuclear reactors. The supercritical water-cooled reactor is one of the six nuclear reactors of Generation IV, and as a consequence of the development of light water, reactors seem to be the most perspective. Thus, materials usually used in light water reactors are also tested under the expected operating conditions of the supercritical water-cooled reactor. Austenitic stainless steel 08Cr18Ni10Ti is widely used in the eastern types of light water nuclear power plants. Therefore, specimens of 08Cr18Ni10Ti were exposed to conditions close to the pseudo-critical point of water and high-temperature supercritical water. The description and evaluation of the corrosion behaviour of austenitic stainless steel have been done based on the results of X-ray diffraction in combination with energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. Thus, significant differences have been found in the structure and composition of oxides formed depending on the temperature of exposure. The high temperature of supercritical water resulted in localised form of corrosion in contrast to the thin oxide layer of 1 µm present on the surface of specimens exposed close to the pseudo-critical point of water. The obtained results are important for further research as the supercritical water can be successfully used as a coolant for small modular reactors, which are currently of interest. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=localised%20corrosion" title="localised corrosion">localised corrosion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supercritical%20water" title=" supercritical water"> supercritical water</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stainless%20steel" title=" stainless steel"> stainless steel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electron%20backscatter%20diffraction" title=" electron backscatter diffraction"> electron backscatter diffraction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160178/evaluation-of-corrosion-behaviour-of-austenitic-steel-08cr18ni10ti-exposed-to-supercritical-water" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160178.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">78</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">14</span> Avoiding Gas Hydrate Problems in Qatar Oil and Gas Industry: Environmentally Friendly Solvents for Gas Hydrate Inhibition</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nabila%20Mohamed">Nabila Mohamed</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Santiago%20Aparicio"> Santiago Aparicio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bahman%20Tohidi"> Bahman Tohidi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mert%20Atilhan"> Mert Atilhan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Qatar's one of the biggest problem in processing its natural resource, which is natural gas, is the often occurring blockage in the pipelines caused due to uncontrolled gas hydrate formation in the pipelines. Several millions of dollars are being spent at the process site to dehydrate the blockage safely by using chemical inhibitors. We aim to establish national database, which addresses the physical conditions that promotes Qatari natural gas to form gas hydrates in the pipelines. Moreover, we aim to design and test novel hydrate inhibitors that are suitable for Qatari natural gas and its processing facilities. From these perspectives we are aiming to provide more effective and sustainable reservoir utilization and processing of Qatari natural gas. In this work, we present the initial findings of a QNRF funded project, which deals with the natural gas hydrate formation characteristics of Qatari type gas in both experimental (PVTx) and computational (molecular simulations) methods. We present the data from the two fully automated apparatus: a gas hydrate autoclave and a rocking cell. Hydrate equilibrium curves including growth/dissociation conditions for multi-component systems for several gas mixtures that represent Qatari type natural gas with and without the presence of well known kinetic and thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors. Ionic liquids were designed and used for testing their inhibition performance and their DFT and molecular modeling simulation results were also obtained and compared with the experimental results. Results showed significant performance of ionic liquids with up to 0.5 % in volume with up to 2 to 4 0C inhibition at high pressures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20hydrates" title="gas hydrates">gas hydrates</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20gas" title=" natural gas"> natural gas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ionic%20liquids" title=" ionic liquids"> ionic liquids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inhibition" title=" inhibition"> inhibition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermodynamic%20inhibitors" title=" thermodynamic inhibitors"> thermodynamic inhibitors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=kinetic%20inhibitors" title=" kinetic inhibitors"> kinetic inhibitors</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/15615/avoiding-gas-hydrate-problems-in-qatar-oil-and-gas-industry-environmentally-friendly-solvents-for-gas-hydrate-inhibition" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/15615.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">1320</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Photocatalysis with Fe/Ti-Pillared Clays for the Oxofunctionalization of Alkylaromatics by O2</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Houria%20Rezala">Houria Rezala</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose%20Luis%20Valverde"> Jose Luis Valverde</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amaya%20Romero"> Amaya Romero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandra%20Molinari"> Alessandra Molinari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrea%20Maldotti"> Andrea Maldotti</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A pillared montmorillonite containing iron doped titania (Fe/Ti-PILC) has been prepared from a natural clay. This material has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, temperature programmed desorption of ammonia, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption, and diffuse reflectance UV-VIS spectroscopy. The layer structure of Fe/Ti-PILC resulted to be ordered with an insertion of pillars, which caused a slight increase in the basal spacing of the clay. Its specific surface area was about three times larger than that of the parent Na-montmorillonite due principally to the creation of a remarkable microporous network. The doped material was a robust photocatalyst able to oxidize liquid alkyl aromatics to the corresponding carbonylic derivatives, using O2 as the oxidizing species, at mild pressure and temperature conditions. Accumulation of valuable carbonylic derivatives was possible since their over-oxidation to carbon dioxide was negligible. Fe/Ti-PILC was able to discriminate between toluene and cyclohexane in favor of the aromatic compound with an efficiency that is about three times higher than that of titanium pillared clays (Ti-PILC). It is likely that the addition of iron favored the formation of new acid sites able to interact with the aromatic substrate. Iron doping caused a significant TiO2 visible light-induced activity (wavelength > 400 nm) with only minor negative effects on its performance under UV-light irradiation (wavelength > 290 nm). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alkyl%20aromatics%20oxidation" title="alkyl aromatics oxidation">alkyl aromatics oxidation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heterogeneous%20photocatalysis" title=" heterogeneous photocatalysis"> heterogeneous photocatalysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=iron%20doping" title=" iron doping"> iron doping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pillared%20clays" title=" pillared clays "> pillared clays </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28984/photocatalysis-with-feti-pillared-clays-for-the-oxofunctionalization-of-alkylaromatics-by-o2" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28984.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">450</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Assessment of Airtightness Through a Standardized Procedure in a Nearly-Zero Energy Demand House</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mar%20Ca%C3%B1ada%20Soriano">Mar Cañada Soriano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Royo-Pastor"> Rafael Royo-Pastor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolina%20Aparicio-Fern%C3%A1ndez"> Carolina Aparicio-Fernández</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose-Luis%20Vivancos"> Jose-Luis Vivancos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The lack of insulation, along with the existence of air leakages, constitute a meaningful impact on the energy performance of buildings. Both of them lead to increases in the energy demand through additional heating and/or cooling loads. Additionally, they cause thermal discomfort. In order to quantify these uncontrolled air currents, pressurization and depressurization tests can be performed. Among them, the Blower Door test is a standardized procedure to determine the airtightness of a space which characterizes the rate of air leakages through the envelope surface, calculating to this purpose an air flow rate indicator. In this sense, the low-energy buildings complying with the Passive House design criteria are required to achieve high levels of airtightness. Due to the invisible nature of air leakages, additional tools are often considered to identify where the infiltrations take place. Among them, the infrared thermography entails a valuable technique to this purpose since it enables their detection. The aim of this study is to assess the airtightness of a typical Mediterranean dwelling house located in the Valencian orchad (Spain) restored under the Passive House standard using to this purpose the blower-door test. Moreover, the building energy performance modelling tools TRNSYS (TRaNsient System Simulation program) and TRNFlow (TRaNsient Flow) have been used to determine its energy performance, and the infiltrations’ identification was carried out by means of infrared thermography. The low levels of infiltrations obtained suggest that this house may comply with the Passive House standard. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=airtightness" title="airtightness">airtightness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blower%20door" title=" blower door"> blower door</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trnflow" title=" trnflow"> trnflow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infrared%20thermography" title=" infrared thermography"> infrared thermography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146714/assessment-of-airtightness-through-a-standardized-procedure-in-a-nearly-zero-energy-demand-house" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146714.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">123</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Comparing Energy Labelling of Buildings in Spain</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolina%20Aparicio-Fern%C3%A1ndez">Carolina Aparicio-Fernández</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alejandro%20Vilar%20Abad"> Alejandro Vilar Abad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mar%20Ca%C3%B1ada%20Soriano"> Mar Cañada Soriano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose-Luis%20Vivancos"> Jose-Luis Vivancos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The building sector is responsible for 40% of the total energy consumption in the European Union (EU). Thus, implementation of strategies for quantifying and reducing buildings energy consumption is indispensable for reaching the EU’s carbon neutrality and energy efficiency goals. Each Member State has transposed the European Directives according to its own peculiarities: existing technical legislation, constructive solutions, climatic zones, etc. Therefore, in accordance with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, Member States have developed different Energy Performance Certificate schemes, using proposed energy simulation software-tool for each national or regional area. Energy Performance Certificates provide a powerful and comprehensive information to predict, analyze and improve the energy demand of new and existing buildings. Energy simulation software and databases allow a better understanding of the current constructive reality of the European building stock. However, Energy Performance Certificates still have to face several issues to consider them as a reliable and global source of information since different calculation tools are used that do not allow the connection between them. In this document, TRNSYS (TRaNsient System Simulation program) software is used to calculate the energy demand of a building, and it is compared with the energy labeling obtained with Spanish Official software-tools. We demonstrate the possibility of using not official software-tools to calculate the Energy Performance Certificate. Thus, this approach could be used throughout the EU and compare the results in all possible cases proposed by the EU Member States. To implement the simulations, an isolated single-family house with different construction solutions is considered. The results are obtained for every climatic zone of the Spanish Technical Building Code. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20demand" title="energy demand">energy demand</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20performance%20certificate%20EPBD" title=" energy performance certificate EPBD"> energy performance certificate EPBD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trnsys" title=" trnsys"> trnsys</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=buildings" title=" buildings"> buildings</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146655/comparing-energy-labelling-of-buildings-in-spain" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146655.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">127</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> A Preparatory Method for Building Construction Implemented in a Case Study in Brazil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aline%20Valverde%20Arroteia">Aline Valverde Arroteia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tatiana%20Gondim%20do%20Amaral"> Tatiana Gondim do Amaral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvio%20Burrattino%20Melhado"> Silvio Burrattino Melhado</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> During the last twenty years, the construction field in Brazil has evolved significantly in response to its market growing and competitiveness. However, this evolving path has faced many obstacles such as cultural barriers and the lack of efforts to achieve quality at the construction site. At the same time, the greatest amount of information generated on the designing or construction phases is lost due to the lack of an effective coordination of these activities. Face this problem, the aim of this research was to implement a French method named PEO which means preparation for building construction (in Portuguese) seeking to understand the design management process and its interface with the building construction phase. The research method applied was qualitative, and it was carried out through two case studies in the city of Goiania, in Goias, Brazil. The research was divided into two stages called pilot study at Company A and implementation of PEO at Company B. After the implementation; the results demonstrated the PEO method's effectiveness and feasibility while a booster on the quality improvement of design management. The analysis showed that the method has a purpose to improve the design and allow the reduction of failures, errors and rework commonly found in the production of buildings. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PEO is feasible to be applied to real estate and building companies. But, companies need to believe in the contribution they can make to the discovery of design failures in conjunction with other stakeholders forming a construction team. The result of PEO can be maximized when adopting the principles of simultaneous engineering and insertion of new computer technologies, which use a three-dimensional model of the building with BIM process. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication" title="communication">communication</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20and%20construction%20interface%20management" title=" design and construction interface management"> design and construction interface management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=preparation%20for%20building%20construction%20%28PEO%29" title=" preparation for building construction (PEO)"> preparation for building construction (PEO)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=proactive%20coordination%20%28CPA%29" title=" proactive coordination (CPA)"> proactive coordination (CPA)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83285/a-preparatory-method-for-building-construction-implemented-in-a-case-study-in-brazil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83285.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">162</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> Programmatic Actions of Social Welfare State in Service to Justice: Law, Society and the Third Sector</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bruno%20Valverde%20Chahaira">Bruno Valverde Chahaira</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Matheus%20Jeronimo%20Low%20Lopes"> Matheus Jeronimo Low Lopes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marta%20Beatriz%20Tanaka%20Ferdinandi"> Marta Beatriz Tanaka Ferdinandi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper proposes to dissect the meanings and / or directions of the State, in order, to present the State models to elaborate a conceptual framework about its function in the legal scope. To do so, it points out the possible contracts established between the State and the Society, since the general principles immanent in them can guide the models of society in force. From this orientation arise the contracts, whose purpose is by the effect to modify the status (the being and / or the opinion) of each of the subjects in presence - State and Society. In this logic, this paper announces the fiduciary contracts and “veredicção”(portuguese word) contracts, from the perspective of semiotics discourse (or greimasian). Therefore, studies focus on the issue of manifest language in unilateral and bilateral or reciprocal relations between the State and Society. Thus, under the biases of the model of the communicative situation and discourse, the guidelines of these contractual relations will be analyzed in order to see if there is a pragmatic sanction: positive when the contract is signed between the subjects (reward), or negative when the contract between they are broken (punishment). In this way, a third path emerges which, in this specific case, passes through the subject-third sector. In other words, the proposal, which is systemic in nature, is to analyze whether, since the contract of the welfare state is not carried out in the constitutional program on fundamental rights: education, health, housing, an others. Therefore, in the structure of the exchange demanded by the society according to its contractual obligations (others), the third way (Third Sector) advances in the empty space left by the State. In this line, it presents the modalities of action of the third sector in the social scope. Finally, the normative communication organization of these three subjects is sought in the pragmatic model of discourse, namely: State, Society and Third Sector, in an attempt to understand the constant dynamics in the Law and in the language of the relations established between them. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=access%20to%20justice" title="access to justice">access to justice</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=state" title=" state"> state</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20rights" title=" social rights"> social rights</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=third%20sector" title=" third sector"> third sector</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83008/programmatic-actions-of-social-welfare-state-in-service-to-justice-law-society-and-the-third-sector" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83008.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">145</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> Dual Electrochemical Immunosensor for IL-13Rα2 and E-Cadherin Determination in Cell, Serum and Tissues from Cancer Patients</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amira%20ben%20Hassine">Amira ben Hassine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Valverde"> A. The proposed methodology is based on the use of sandwich immunosensing approaches (involving horseradish peroxidase-labeled detector antibodies) implemented onto magnetic microbeads (MBs) and amperometric transduction at screen-printed dual carbon electrodes (SPdCEs). The magnetic bioconjugates were captured onto SPdCEs and the amperometric transduction was performed using the H2O2/hydroquinone (HQ) system. Under optimal experimental conditions, the developed bio platform demonstrates linear concentration ranges of 1.0–25 and 5.0-100 ng mL-1, detection limits of 0.28 and 1.04 ng mL-1 for E-cad and IL-13Rα2, respectively, and excellent selectivity against other non-target proteins. The developed immuno-platform also offers a good reproducibility among amperometric responses provided by nine different sensors constructed in the same manner (Relative Standard Deviation values of 3.1% for E-cad and 4.3% for IL-13Rα2). Moreover, obtained results confirm the practical applicability of this bio-platform for the accurate determination of the endogenous levels of both extracellular receptors in colon cancer cells (both intact and lysed) with different metastatic potential and serum and tissues from patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer at different grades. Interesting features in terms of, simplicity, speed, portability and sample amount required to provide quantitative results, make this immuno-platform more compatible than conventional methodologies with the clinical diagnosis and prognosis at the point of care. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrochemistry" title="electrochemistry">electrochemistry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mmunosensors" title=" mmunosensors"> mmunosensors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biosensors" title=" biosensors"> biosensors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=E-cadherin" title=" E-cadherin"> E-cadherin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IL-13%20receptor%20%CE%B12" title=" IL-13 receptor α2"> IL-13 receptor α2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cancer%20colorectal" title=" cancer colorectal"> cancer colorectal</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108226/dual-electrochemical-immunosensor-for-il-13ra2-and-e-cadherin-determination-in-cell-serum-and-tissues-from-cancer-patients" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108226.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Galvanized Steel by Sintering Zinc Nanopowder</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Javier%20Montes%20Ruiz-Cabello">Francisco Javier Montes Ruiz-Cabello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Guerrero-Vacas"> Guillermo Guerrero-Vacas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Bermudez-Romero"> Sara Bermudez-Romero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Miguel%20Cabrerizo%20Vilchez"> Miguel Cabrerizo Vilchez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Miguel%20Angel%20Rodriguez-Valverde"> Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Valverde</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Galvanized steel is one of the widespread metallic materials used in industry. It consists on a iron-based alloy (steel) coated with a layer of zinc with variable thickness. The zinc is aimed to prevent the inner steel from corrosion and staining. Its production is cheaper than the stainless steel and this is the reason why it is employed in the construction of materials with large dimensions in aeronautics, urban/ industrial edification or ski-resorts. In all these applications, turning the natural hydrophilicity of the metal surface into superhydrophobicity is particularly interesting and would open a wide variety of additional functionalities. However, producing a superhydrophobic surface on galvanized steel may be a very difficult task. Superhydrophobic surfaces are characterized by a specific surface texture which is reached either by coating the surface with a material that incorporates such texture, or by conducting several roughening methods. Since galvanized steel is already a coated material, the incorporation of a second coating may be undesired. On the other hand, the methods that are recurrently used to incorporate the surface texture leading to superhydrophobicity in metals are aggressive and may damage their surface. In this work, we used a novel strategy which goal is to produce superhydrophobic galvanized steel by a two-step non-aggressive process. The first process is aimed to create a hierarchical structure by incorporating zinc nanoparticles sintered on the surface at a temperature slightly lower than the zinc’s melting point. The second one is a hydrophobization by a thick fluoropolymer layer deposition. The wettability of the samples is characterized in terms of tilting plate and bouncing drop experiments, while the roughness is analyzed by confocal microscopy. The durability of the produced surfaces was also explored. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=galvanaized%20steel" title="galvanaized steel">galvanaized steel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=superhydrophobic%20surfaces" title=" superhydrophobic surfaces"> superhydrophobic surfaces</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sintering%20nanoparticles" title=" sintering nanoparticles"> sintering nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zinc%20nanopowder" title=" zinc nanopowder"> zinc nanopowder</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124318/fabrication-of-superhydrophobic-galvanized-steel-by-sintering-zinc-nanopowder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124318.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">150</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Compression-Extrusion Test to Assess Texture of Thickened Liquids for Dysphagia </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jesus%20Salmeron">Jesus Salmeron</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carmen%20De%20Vega"> Carmen De Vega</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Soledad%20Vicente"> Maria Soledad Vicente</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mireia%20Olabarria"> Mireia Olabarria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olaia%20Martinez"> Olaia Martinez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing affects mostly elder people: 56-78% of the institutionalized and 44% of the hospitalized. Liquid food thickening is a necessary measure in this situation because it reduces the risk of penetration-aspiration. Until now, and as proposed by the American Dietetic Association in 2002, possible consistencies have been categorized in three groups attending to their viscosity: nectar (50-350 mPa•s), honey (350-1750 mPa•s) and pudding (>1750 mPa•s). The adequate viscosity level should be identified for every patient, according to her/his impairment. Nevertheless, a systematic review on dysphagia diet performed recently indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that there is any transition of clinical relevance between the three levels proposed. It was also stated that other physical properties of the bolus (slipperiness, density or cohesiveness, among others) could influence swallowing in affected patients and could contribute to the amount of remaining residue. Texture parameters need to be evaluated as possible alternative to viscosity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the instrumental extrusion-compression test as a possible tool to characterize changes along time in water thickened with various products and in the three theoretical consistencies. Six commercial thickeners were used: NM® (NM), Multi-thick® (M), Nutilis Powder® (Nut), Resource® (R), Thick&Easy® (TE) and Vegenat® (V). All of them with a modified starch base. Only one of them, Nut, also had a 6,4% of gum (guar, tara and xanthan). They were prepared as indicated in the instructions of each product and dispensing the correspondent amount for nectar, honey and pudding consistencies in 300 mL of tap water at 18ºC-20ºC. The mixture was stirred for about 30 s. Once it was homogeneously spread, it was dispensed in 30 mL plastic glasses; always to the same height. Each of these glasses was used as a measuring point. Viscosity was measured using a rotational viscometer (ST-2001, Selecta, Barcelona). Extrusion-compression test was performed using a TA.XT2i texture analyzer (Stable Micro Systems, UK) with a 25 mm diameter cylindrical probe (SMSP/25). Penetration distance was set at 10 mm and a speed of 3 mm/s. Measurements were made at 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes from the moment samples were mixed. From the force (g)–time (s) curves obtained in the instrumental assays, maximum force peak (F) was chosen a reference parameter. Viscosity (mPa•s) and F (g) showed to be highly correlated and had similar development along time, following time-dependent quadratic models. It was possible to predict viscosity using F as an independent variable, as they were linearly correlated. In conclusion, compression-extrusion test could be an alternative and a useful tool to assess physical characteristics of thickened liquids. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression-extrusion%20test" title="compression-extrusion test">compression-extrusion test</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dysphagia" title=" dysphagia"> dysphagia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=texture%20analyzer" title=" texture analyzer"> texture analyzer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thickener" title=" thickener"> thickener</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64615/compression-extrusion-test-to-assess-texture-of-thickened-liquids-for-dysphagia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64615.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">368</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Insight2OSC: Using Electroencephalography (EEG) Rhythms from the Emotiv Insight for Musical Composition via Open Sound Control (OSC) </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Constanza%20Levic%C3%A1n">Constanza Levicán</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andr%C3%A9s%20Aparicio"> Andrés Aparicio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rodrigo%20F.%20C%C3%A1diz"> Rodrigo F. One interesting question that arises from this practice is whether it is possible to compose or perform music by using only the brain as a musical instrument. In order to approach this question, we propose a BCI for musical composition, based on the representation of some mental states as the musician thinks about sounds. We developed software, called Insight2OSC, that allows the usage of the Emotiv Insight device as a musical instrument, by sending the EEG data to audio processing software such as MaxMSP through the OSC protocol. We provide two compositional applications bundled with the software, which we call Mapping your Mental State and Thinking On. The signals produced by the brain have different frequencies (or rhythms) depending on the level of activity, and they are classified as one of the following waves: delta (0.5-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz), gamma (30-50 Hz). These rhythms have been found to be related to some recognizable mental states. For example, the delta rhythm is predominant in a deep sleep, while beta and gamma rhythms have higher amplitudes when the person is awake and very concentrated. Our first application (Mapping your Mental State) produces different sounds representing the mental state of the person: focused, active, relaxed or in a state similar to a deep sleep by the selection of the dominants rhythms provided by the EEG device. The second application relies on the physiology of the brain, which is divided into several lobes: frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital. The frontal lobe is related to abstract thinking and high-level functions, the parietal lobe conveys the stimulus of the body senses, the occipital lobe contains the primary visual cortex and processes visual stimulus, the temporal lobe processes auditory information and it is important for memory tasks. In consequence, our second application (Thinking On) processes the audio output depending on the users’ brain activity as it activates a specific area of the brain that can be measured using the Insight device. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=BCI" title="BCI">BCI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=music%20composition" title=" music composition"> music composition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emotiv%20insight" title=" emotiv insight"> emotiv insight</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=OSC" title=" OSC"> OSC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64805/insight2osc-using-electroencephalography-eeg-rhythms-from-the-emotiv-insight-for-musical-composition-via-open-sound-control-osc" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64805.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">322</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Standardizing and Achieving Protocol Objectives for ChestWall Radiotherapy Treatment Planning Process using an O-ring Linac in High-, Low- and Middle-income Countries</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Milton%20Ixquiac">Milton Ixquiac</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erick%20Montenegro"> Erick Montenegro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Reynoso"> Francisco Reynoso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Matthew%20Schmidt"> Matthew Schmidt</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Mazur"> Thomas Mazur</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tianyu%20Zhao"> Tianyu Zhao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hiram%20Gay"> Hiram Gay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Geoffrey%20Hugo"> Geoffrey Hugo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lauren%20Henke"> Lauren Henke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jeff%20Michael%20Michalski"> Jeff Michael Michalski</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angel%20Velarde"> Angel Velarde</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vicky%20de%20Falla"> Vicky de Falla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Franky%20Reyes"> Franky Reyes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Osmar%20Hernandez"> Osmar Hernandez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Edgar%20Aparicio%20Ruiz"> Edgar Aparicio Ruiz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Baozhou%20Sun"> Baozhou Sun</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Purpose: Radiotherapy departments in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Guatemala have recently introduced intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). IMRT has become the standard of care in high-income countries (HIC) due to reduced toxicity and improved outcomes in some cancers. The purpose of this work is to show the agreement between the dosimetric results shown in the Dose Volume Histograms (DVH) to the objectives proposed in the adopted protocol. This is the initial experience with an O-ring Linac. Methods and Materials: An O-Linac Linac was installed at our clinic in Guatemala in 2019 and has been used to treat approximately 90 patients daily with IMRT. This Linac is a completely Image Guided Device since to deliver each radiotherapy session must take a Mega Voltage Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (MVCBCT). In each MVCBCT, the Linac deliver 9 UM, and they are taken into account while performing the planning. To start the standardization, the TG263 was employed in the nomenclature and adopted a hypofractionated protocol to treat ChestWall, including supraclavicular nodes achieving 40.05Gy in 15 fractions. The planning was developed using 4 semiarcs from 179-305 degrees. The planner must create optimization volumes for targets and Organs at Risk (OARs); the difficulty for the planner was the dose base due to the MVCBCT. To evaluate the planning modality, we used 30 chestwall cases. Results: The plans created manually achieve the protocol objectives. The protocol objectives are the same as the RTOG1005, and the DHV curves look clinically acceptable. Conclusions: Despite the O-ring Linac doesn´t have the capacity to obtain kv images, the cone beam CT was created using MV energy, the dose delivered by the daily image setup process still without affect the dosimetric quality of the plans, and the dose distribution is acceptable achieving the protocol objectives. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hypofrationation" title="hypofrationation">hypofrationation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=VMAT" title=" VMAT"> VMAT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chestwall" title=" chestwall"> chestwall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radiotherapy%20planning" title=" radiotherapy planning"> radiotherapy planning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163550/standardizing-and-achieving-protocol-objectives-for-chestwall-radiotherapy-treatment-planning-process-using-an-o-ring-linac-in-high-low-and-middle-income-countries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163550.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">118</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Optimized Deep Learning-Based Facial Emotion Recognition System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erick%20C.%20Valverde">Erick C. The ability to identify human emotions would enable smart healthcare facility to diagnose mental health illnesses (e.g., depression and stress) as well as better human social interactions with smart technologies. The FER system involves two steps: 1) face detection task and 2) facial emotion recognition task. It classifies the human expression in various categories such as angry, disgust, fear, happy, sad, surprise, and neutral. This system requires intensive research to address issues with human diversity, various unique human expressions, and variety of human facial features due to age differences. These issues generally affect the ability of the FER system to detect human emotions with high accuracy. Early stage of FER systems used simple supervised classification task algorithms like K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and artificial neural networks (ANN). These conventional FER systems have issues with low accuracy due to its inefficiency to extract significant features of several human emotions. To increase the accuracy of FER systems, deep learning (DL)-based methods, like convolutional neural networks (CNN), are proposed. These methods can find more complex features in the human face by means of the deeper connections within its architectures. However, the inference speed and computational costs of a DL-based FER system is often disregarded in exchange for higher accuracy results. To cope with this drawback, an optimized DL-based FER system is proposed in this study.An extreme version of Inception V3, known as Xception model, is leveraged by applying different network optimization methods. Specifically, network pruning and quantization are used to enable lower computational costs and reduce memory usage, respectively. To support low resource requirements, a 68-landmark face detector from Dlib is used in the early step of the FER system.Furthermore, a DL compiler is utilized to incorporate advanced optimization techniques to the Xception model to improve the inference speed of the FER system. In comparison to VGG-Net and ResNet50, the proposed optimized DL-based FER system experimentally demonstrates the objectives of the network optimization methods used. As a result, the proposed approach can be used to create an efficient and real-time FER system. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20learning" title="deep learning">deep learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=face%20detection" title=" face detection"> face detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=facial%20emotion%20recognition" title=" facial emotion recognition"> facial emotion recognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=network%20optimization%20methods" title=" network optimization methods"> network optimization methods</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147341/optimized-deep-learning-based-facial-emotion-recognition-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147341.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">118</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Cancer Stem Cell-Associated Serum Proteins Obtained by Maldi TOF/TOF Mass Spectrometry in Women with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javier%20Enciso-Benavides">Javier Enciso-Benavides</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fredy%20Fabian"> Fredy Fabian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carlos%20Castaneda"> Carlos Castaneda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luis%20Alfaro"> Luis Alfaro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alex%20Choque"> Alex Choque</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aparicio%20Aguilar"> Aparicio Aguilar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javier%20Enciso"> Javier Enciso</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: The use of biomarkers in breast cancer diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis has gained increasing interest. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subpopulation of tumor cells that can drive tumor initiation and may cause relapse. Therefore, due to the importance of diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis, several biomarkers that characterize CSCs have been identified; however, in treatment-naïve triple-negative breast tumors, there is an urgent need to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets. According to this, the aim of this study was to identify serum proteins associated with cancer stem cells and pluripotency in women with triple-negative breast tumors in order to subsequently identify a biomarker for this type of breast tumor. Material and Methods: Whole blood samples from 12 women with histopathologically diagnosed triple-negative breast tumors were used after obtaining informed consent from the patient. Blood serum was obtained by conventional procedure and frozen at -80ºC. Identification of cancer stem cell-associated proteins was performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), protein analysis was obtained using the AB Sciex TOF/TOF™ 5800 system (AB Sciex, USA). Sequences not aligned by ProteinPilot™ software were analyzed by Protein BLAST. Results: The following proteins related to pluripotency and cancer stem cells were identified by MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometry: A-chain, Serpin A12 [Homo sapiens], AIEBP [Homo sapiens], Alpha-one antitrypsin, AT {internal fragment} [human, partial peptide, 20 aa] [Homo sapiens], collagen alpha 1 chain precursor variant [Homo sapiens], retinoblastoma-associated protein variant [Homo sapiens], insulin receptor, CRA_c isoform [Homo sapiens], Hydroxyisourate hydrolase [Streptomyces scopuliridis], MUCIN-6 [Macaca mulatta], Alpha-actinin-3 [Chrysochloris asiatica], Polyprotein M, CRA_d isoform, partial [Homo sapiens], Transcription factor SOX-12 [Homo sapiens]. Recommendations: The serum proteins identified in this study should be investigated in the exosome of triple-negative breast cancer stem cells and in the blood serum of women without breast cancer. Subsequently, proteins found only in the blood serum of women with triple-negative breast cancer should be identified in situ in triple-negative breast cancer tissue in order to identify a biomarker to study the evolution of this type of cancer, or that could be a therapeutic target. Conclusions: Eleven cancer stem cell-related serum proteins were identified in 12 women with triple-negative breast cancer, of which MUCIN-6, retinoblastoma-associated protein variant, transcription factor SOX-12, and collagen alpha 1 chain are the most representative and have not been studied so far in this type of breast tumor. The region faces challenges such as dysfunctional problems, physical rehabilitation needs, and a high prevalence of hearing diseases, leading to neglect and substandard health services. Limited access to healthcare due to communication barriers and transportation difficulties exacerbates these issues. To address these challenges, a research initiative was undertaken to leverage information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve healthcare quality and accessibility for this vulnerable population. The primary objective was to develop a tele-rehabilitation system to provide asynchronous online therapies and teleconsultation services for patient follow-up during the recovery process. The project comprises two components: Communication systems and human development. A technological component involving the establishment of a wireless network connecting rural centers and the development of a mobile application for video-based therapy delivery. Communications systems will be provided by a radio link that utilizes internet provided by the Colombian government, located in the municipality of San Vicente del Caguán to connect two rural centers (Pozos and Tres Esquinas) and a mobile application for managing videos for asynchronous broadcasting in sidewalks and patients' homes. This component constitutes an operational model integrating information and telecommunications technologies. The second component involves pedagogical and human development. The primary focus is on the patient, where performance indicators and the efficiency of therapy support were evaluated for the assessment and monitoring of telerehabilitation results in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. They wanted to implement a wireless network to ensure audiovisual content transmission for tele-rehabilitation, design audiovisual content for tele-rehabilitation based on services provided by the ESE Hospital San Rafael in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, develop a software application for fixed and mobile devices enabling access to tele-rehabilitation audiovisual content for healthcare personnel and patients and finally to evaluate the technological solution's contribution to the ESE Hospital San Rafael community. The research comprised four phases: wireless network implementation, audiovisual content design, software application development, and evaluation of the technological solution's impact. Key findings include the successful implementation of virtual teletherapy, both synchronously and asynchronously, and the assessment of technological performance indicators, patient evolution, timeliness, acceptance, and service quality of tele-rehabilitation therapies. The study demonstrated improved service coverage, increased care supply, enhanced access to timely therapies for patients, and positive acceptance of teletherapy modalities. Additionally, the project generated new knowledge for potential replication in other regions and proposed strategies for short- and medium-term improvement of service quality and care indicators <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-health" title="e-health">e-health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20informatics" title=" medical informatics"> medical informatics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=telemedicine" title=" telemedicine"> telemedicine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=telerehabilitation" title=" telerehabilitation"> telerehabilitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virtual%20therapy" title=" virtual therapy"> virtual therapy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185817/telemedicine-for-telerehabilitation-in-areas-affected-by-social-conflicts-in-colombia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185817.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">55</span> </span> </div> </div> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
