so he remade<MH7725, 6213a> it into another<MH312> vessel<MH3627>, as it pleased<MH5869, 3474> the potter<MH3335> to make<MH6213a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to me, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“Am<MH3201> I not able<MH3201>, house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>, to deal<MH6213a> with you as this<MH2088> potter<MH3335> <i>does?</i>” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. “Behold<MH2009>, like the clay<MH2563a> in the potter’s<MH3335> hand<MH3027>, so<MH3651> are you in My hand<MH3027>, house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>At one moment<MH7281> I might speak<MH1696> concerning<MH5921> a nation<MH1471> or concerning<MH5921> a kingdom<MH4467> to uproot<MH5428> <i>it,</i> to tear<MH5422> <i>it</i> down<MH5422>, or to destroy<MH6> <i>it;</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>if that nation<MH1471> against<MH5921> which<MH834> I have spoken<MH1696> turns<MH7725> from its evil<MH7463a>, I will relent<MH5162> of the disaster<MH7463a> that I planned<MH2803> to bring<MH6213a> on it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Or at <i>another</i> moment<MH7281> I might speak<MH1696> concerning<MH5921> a nation<MH1471> or concerning<MH5921> a kingdom<MH4467> to build<MH1129> up<MH1129> or to plant<MH5193> <i>it;</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>if it does<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in My sight<MH5869> by not obeying<MH8085> My voice<MH6963>, then I will relent<MH5162> of the good<MH2899b> with which<MH834> I said<MH559> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>that I would bless<MH3190> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So now<MH6258>, speak<MH559> to the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> and against<MH5921> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, saying<MH559>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, I am forming<MH3335> a disaster<MH7463a> against<MH5921> you and devising<MH2803> a plan<MH4284> against<MH5921> you. Now<MH4994> turn<MH7725> back<MH7725>, each<MH376> of you from his evil<MH7451a> way<MH1870>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>correct<MH3190> your ways<MH1870> and your deeds<MH4611>!”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But they will say<MH559>, ‘It’s hopeless<MH2976>! For we are going<MH1980> to follow<MH310, 1980> our own plans<MH4284>, and each<MH376> of us will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>persist<MH6213a> in the stubbornness<MH8307> of his evil<MH7451a> heart<MH3820>.’ <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“Therefore<MH3651> this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: <p class="indent1stline">‘Just<MH4994> ask<MH7592> among the nations<MH1471>, <t><p class="indent1">Who<MH4310> <i>ever</i> heard<MH8085> <i>anything</i> like <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>this<MH428>? <t><p class="indent1">The virgin<MH1330> of Israel<MH3478> <t><p class="indent1">Has done<MH6213a> a most<MH3966> appalling<MH8186b> thing<MH8186b>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>‘Does the snow<MH7950> of Lebanon<MH3844> leave<MH5800a> the rock<MH6697> of the open country<MH7706a> alone<MH5800a>? <t><p class="indent1">Or<MH518> is the cold<MH7119> flowing<MH5140> water<MH4325> <i>from</i> a foreign<MH2114a> <i>land</i> ever dried<MH5405> up<MH5405>? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>‘For My people<MH5971a> have forgotten<MH7911> Me, <t><p class="indent1">They burn<MH6999> incense<MH6999> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to worthless<MH7723> <i>gods.</i> <t><p class="indent1">And they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>have stumbled<MH3782> in their ways<MH1870>, <t><p class="indent1">In the ancient<MH5769> roads<MH7635>, <t><p class="indent1">To walk<MH1980> on paths<MH5410b>, <t><p class="indent1">Not on a highway<MH1870, 5549>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>To make<MH7760> their land<MH776> a desolation<MH8047>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>An object of</i> perpetual<MH5769> hissing<MH8292>; <t><p class="indent1">Everyone<MH3605> who passes<MH5674a> by it will be astonished<MH8074> <t><p class="indent1">And shake<MH5110> his head<MH7218>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>‘Like an east<MH6921> wind<MH7307> I will scatter<MH6327a> them <t><p class="indent1">Before<MH6440> the enemy<MH340>; <t><p class="indent1">I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>show<MH7200> them My back<MH6203> and not <i>My</i> face<MH6440> <t><p class="indent1">In the day<MH3117> of their disaster<MH343>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559>, “Come<MH1980> and let’s devise<MH2803> plans<MH4284> against<MH5921> Jeremiah<MH3414>. Certainly<MH3588> the Law<MH8451> is not going to be lost<MH6> by the priest<MH3548>, nor<MH3808> advice<MH6098> by the wise<MH2450>, nor<MH3808> <i>the divine</i> word<MH1697> by the prophet<MH5030>!
