A person’s<MH120> wisdom<MH2451> illuminates<MH215> his face<MH6440> and makes his stern<MH5797> face<MH6440> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>brighten<MH8132> up<MH8132>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>I say, “Keep<MH8104> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the king<MH4428> because<MH5921, 1697> of the oath<MH7621> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>before God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Do not be<MH926> in<MH926> a<MH926> hurry<MH926> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to leave<MH1980, 4480> him. Do not join<MH5975> in an evil<MH7451a> matter<MH1697>, for he will do<MH6213a> whatever<MH3605, 834> he pleases<MH2654a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Since<MH834> the word<MH1697> of the king<MH4428> is authoritative<MH7983>, who<MH4310> will say<MH559> to him, “What<MH4100> are you doing<MH6213a>?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>One who keeps<MH8104> a <i>royal</i> command<MH4687> experiences<MH3045> no<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>trouble<MH1697, 7451a>, for a wise<MH2450> heart<MH3820> knows<MH3045> the proper time<MH6256> and procedure<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For there<MH3426> is<MH3426> a proper time<MH6256> and procedure<MH4941> for every<MH3605> delight<MH2656>, though<MH3588> a person’s<MH120> trouble<MH7463a> is heavy<MH7227a> upon him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>If<MH3588> no<MH369> one<MH369> knows<MH3045> what<MH4100> will happen<MH1961>, who<MH4310> can tell<MH5046> him when<MH3588, 3512c> it will happen<MH1961>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>No<MH369> one<MH120> has<MH7989> authority<MH7989> over the wind<MH7307> to restrain<MH3607> the wind<MH7307>, nor<MH369> authority<MH7983> over the day<MH3117> of death<MH4194>; and there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> <i>military</i> discharge<MH4917> in the time<MH4421> of<MH4421> war<MH4421>, and evil<MH7562> will not save<MH4422> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>those<MH1167> who<MH1167> practice<MH1167> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>All<MH3605> this<MH2088> I have seen<MH7200>, and have applied<MH5414> my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>mind<MH3820> to every<MH3605> deed<MH4639> that has been done<MH6213a> under<MH8478> the sun<MH8121> at a time<MH6256> when<MH834> one person<MH120> has exercised<MH7980> authority<MH7980> over <i>another</i> person<MH120> to his detriment<MH7451b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So<MH3651> then, I have seen<MH7200> the wicked<MH7563> buried<MH6912>, those who used to go<MH935> in<MH935> and out of the holy<MH6918> place<MH4725>, and they are <i>soon</i> forgotten<MH7911> in the city<MH5892b> where<MH834> they did<MH6213a> such<MH3651> things<MH3651>. This<MH2088> too<MH1571> is futility<MH1892>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Because<MH834> the sentence<MH6599> against an evil<MH7451a> deed<MH4639> is not executed<MH6213a> quickly<MH4120>, therefore<MH5921, 3651> the hearts<MH3820> of the sons<MH1121> of mankind<MH120> among them are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>fully<MH4390> given<MH4390> to do<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Although<MH834> a sinner<MH2398> does<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> a hundred<MH3967> <i>times</i> and may lengthen<MH748> his <i>life,</i> still<MH3588, 1571> I know<MH3045> that it will go<MH1961> well<MH2896a> for those who fear<MH3372a> God<MH430>, who<MH834> fear<MH3372a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Him openly<MH4480, 6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But it will not go<MH1961> well<MH2896a> for the evil<MH7563> person<MH7563> and he will not lengthen<MH748> his days<MH3117> like a shadow<MH6738>, because<MH834> he does not fear<MH3372a> God<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>There<MH3426> is<MH3426> futility<MH1892> which<MH834> is done<MH6213a> on the earth<MH776>, that is, there<MH3426> are<MH3426> righteous<MH6662> people<MH6662> to whom<MH834> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>happens<MH5060> according to the deeds<MH4639> of the wicked<MH7563>. On the other hand, there<MH3426> are<MH3426> evil<MH7563> people<MH7563> to whom<MH7945> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>happens<MH5060> according to the deeds<MH4639> of the righteous<MH6662>. I say<MH559> that this<MH2088> too<MH1571> is futility<MH1892>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So I commended<MH7623b> pleasure<MH8057>, for there<MH369> is<MH369> nothing<MH369> good<MH2896a> for a person<MH120> under<MH8478> the sun<MH8121> except<MH3588, 518> to eat<MH398>, drink<MH8354>, and be<MH8055> joyful<MH8055>, and this<MH1931> will stand<MH3867a> by him in his labor<MH5999> <i>throughout</i> the days<MH3117> of his life<MH2425b> which<MH834> God<MH430> has given<MH5414> him under<MH8478> the sun<MH8121>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> I devoted<MH5414> my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>mind<MH3820> to know<MH3045> wisdom<MH2451> and to see<MH7200> the business<MH6045> which<MH834> has been done<MH6213a> on the earth<MH776> (even<MH1571> though<MH3588> one<MH369> should <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>never<MH369> sleep<MH7200, 8142, 5869> day<MH3117> or night<MH3915>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/ecclesiastes/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>and I saw<MH7200> every<MH3605> work<MH4639> of God<MH430>, <i>I concluded</i> that one<MH120> cannot<MH3201, 3808> discover<MH4672> the work<MH4639> which<MH834> has been done<MH6213a> under<MH8478> the sun<MH8121>.
