República Checa fue llamada a convertirse en revelación y con Karel Poborsky, como su máxima estrella de aquel seleccionado que terminó en segundo lugar.</p> <p>Poborsky fue un mediocampista que ocupaba la banda derecha y llegó al Manchester United después de la Euro ´96, pero lamentablemente no pudo brillar como se esperaba, producto que un tal David Beckham se apoderó del mismo puesto, relegándolo a un segundo plano.</p> <p>Nació el 30 de marzo de 1972 en Trebon, Checoslovaquia. Debutó como profesional en 1991 en el Ceske Budejovice para retirarse en el mismo club el 2007. De él se escribieron libros y canciones; se hicieron películas y videojuegos. Recibió la Orden del Imperio Británico y le construyeron tres estatuas. Sólo claudicó ante un rival: el alcohol.</strong></p> <p>Ya en 1991 Brian Clough era un superhéroe de dos ciudades y de dos equipos con una gran rivalidad futbolística: el Derby County y el Nottingham Forest. En esos dos clubes que no pertenecían a la elite del fútbol inglés había construido los mejores momentos de la historia de cada uno. Un año antes, la Universidad de Nottingham lo había nombrado doctor honoris causa como Master of Arts. En breve, recibió la Orden del Imperio Británico con el rango de oficial. Esto le permitía que le trataran oficialmente añadiendo las iniciales OBE (Officer of the British Empire) tras su nombre. Entonces, al momento de las solemnidades, el inmenso Clough respondió con su habitual irreverencia y lucidez. Dijo que las iniciales debían ser de su apodo Old Big ‘Ead («viejo creído»).</p> <p>Nunca se sabía bien si hablaba en serio o en broma. Parecía invariablemente a mitad de camino entre la arrogancia y la simpatía. Salvo cuando se dedicaba a lo suyo: el fútbol. Había sido delantero del Middlesbrough (la ciudad de su nacimiento; el club del que se hizo hincha en los días de la niñez) y del Sunderland. Sus estadísticas lo cuentan como un goleador tremendo: hizo 267 goles en 296 partidos, entre 1955 y 1965. También jugó, pero sin tanto éxitos, en el seleccionado inglés. Una lesión ligamentaria en una de sus rodillas lo obligó a retirarse a los 29 años. Curiosamente, lo mejor estaba por venir. Comenzó su recorrido como entrenador con una aceptable campaña con el Hartlepool. Ese paso marcó uno de los rasgos de su carrera: pelearse con las autoridades, en este caso, con el presidente Ernie Ord. En consecuencia, junto a su inseparable ayudante y amigo Peter Taylor, partieron rumbo al Derby County, que llevaba diez años en la Segunda División. Y consiguió lo que parecía imposible: en cuatro años llevó al equipo a ganar el título en la Liga inglesa (hoy Premier League) y luego a las semifinales de la Copa de Europa, en la que fue eliminado en unas semifinales de escándalo por la Juventus. Volvió a pelearse con las autoridades del club, que lo consideraban inmanejable. Y decidieron echarlo. Al día siguiente recibieron dos mensajes: el primero, una carta del plantel solicitando que regrese el entrenador; el segundo, fue multitudinario: los hinchas organizaron la campaña Bring Back Clough («traigan de vuelta a Clough»). No hubo caso: Clough prefirió irse a dirigir al Brighton, de la Tercera División, y luego al Leeds United. No le fue bien.</p> <p>Pero no fue el final, se trató apenas de un impulso: en enero de 1975, asumió en el Nottingham Forest. Uno de los milagros más grandes de la historia del fútbol estaba por suceder. Entre 1977 y 1980 el equipo pasó de la Segunda División a ganar siete títulos (una Liga, dos Copas de la Liga, una Community Shield, dos Copas de Campeones de Europa y una Supercopa de Europa). Tenía una varita mágica: convertía a jugadores desconocidos en figuras. Un caso emblemático fue el de John Robertson, quien cuando llegó al Forest iba a ser vendido a un equipo de Tercera División. Luego fue clave en ese ciclo impresionante. Decía Clough sobre él: «Era un joven realmente muy poco atractivo. Si un día me estaba encontrando un poco mal, me sentaba al lado suyo. Yo parecía Errol Flynn comparado con él. Pero le dabas un metro de césped y era un artista. El Picasso de nuestro equipo».</p> <p>Su ciclo en el Forest continuó hasta 1993 y ganó otras dos Copas de la Liga (en 1989 y 1990). Esos dos trofeos fueron los últimos en la historia del club. Con la partida de Clough el Nottingham fue perdiendo terreno. Y su mayor motivo de orgullo, ahora, parece ser evocar al increíble Clough.</p> <p>Nunca lo eligieron para dirigir al seleccionado inglés. Una rareza. O no tanto. Lo explicó él mismo, en alguna oportunidad: «Estoy seguro de que los encargados de decidir al seleccionador inglés pensaron que si me daban el cargo, hubiera querido manejar todo. Fueron astutos: es exactamente lo que habría hecho». Era políticamente incorrecto.</p> <p>Clough siempre se manifestó socialista y le ofrecieron en varias oportunidades un puesto en el Partido Laborista para ser candidato al parlamento inglés. Nunca aceptó. También militaba: era habitual que participara de las marchas de apoyo a las huelgas de los mineros, incluso formando parte de los piquetes. Y firmó el manifiesto de fundación apoyando a la Anti-Nazi League, una organización de izquierda que tuvo su apogeo a finales de los años 70.</p> <p>Cuando dejó su cargo de entrenador, ya conocía algún infierno del alcohol. En 2002 publicó una autobiografía titulada «Cloughie: Walking on water» en la que además de repasar toda su carrera cuenta en detalle sus problemas con la bebida. Pero tenía humor incluso para eso: en la presentación del libro se refirió al título elegido y dijo «¿caminar sobre el agua? Supongo que mucha gente estará diciendo que en vez de caminar sobre ella, debería haberla tomado más en mis bebidas. Tienen toda la razón».</p> <p>Murió el 20 de septiembre de 2004 debido a un cáncer de estómago. Tuvieron que habilitar un estadio, el Pride Park de Derby, para que lo fuera a despedir tanta gente que lo quería. No se recuerdan en la ciudad de Derby tantas ofrendas florales juntas.</p> <p>Antes y después de su adiós, recibió todos los tributos: le escribieron libros y canciones; hicieron videojuegos y películas; una de las tribunas The City Ground, el estadio del Forest, fue reedificada en 1980 con su nombre; en julio de 2004, el tranvía #215 de Nottingham fue renombrado «Brian Clough»; en agosto de 2005, se comenzó a llamar «Clough Way» el tramo de la carretera A52 que une Derby con Nottingham; en ambas ciudades, hay una estatua que lo recuerda; lo mismo sucede cerca de la casa en la que se crió, en Middlesbrough.</p> <p>Una vez, ya consagrado, le preguntaron cuál había sido el día más feliz de su vida. Y el dueño de tantos éxitos, El Rey de Copas, respondió: «Cuando me casé con mi esposa Barbara». Lo dijo serio, convencido. La <a href="https://pepelotas.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/la-copa-fifa-y-su-verdadero-dueno/">Copa del Mundo FIFA</a> que es propiedad del ente rector del fútbol, fue creada para la Copa Mundial de Alemania ´74 y en su zócalo caben los nombres de 17 selecciones, es decir, el último nombre que podrá registrarse será para el Mundial de 2038.</p> <p>Como dato anecdótico, el trofeo de oro de 18 quilates mide 36,8 cms de altura y pesa 6.175 kg. inglesa (Elsie Oliver) a Gran Bretaña. Ambos se hicieron futbolistas y se transformaron en los primeros chilenos en jugar en la liga inglesa y en titularse campeones defendiendo los colores del Newclastle (1948-53).</p> <p><a href="https://pepelotas.wordpress.com/2009/01/30/la-era-robledo/" target="_blank">Jorge Robledo</a> fue el más conocido de los dos hermanos, delantero potente, goleador. Dejó una huella única en el fútbol chileno (incluso se llegó hablar de la “Era Robledo”). Eduardo o más conocido como Ted jugaba con la 6. Tenía un físico destacado y junto a su hermano construyeron una destacada carrera: Barnesley FC (1946-48), Colo – Colo (1953-56), seleccionados chilenos.</p> <p>Ted se retira en 1958 jugando sus dos últimos años en el Notts County. Regresó a Chile y ejerció como técnico electrónico en la plante de rastreo satelital que la NASA instaló en aquellos años en Chile. Pero en 1965 el fútbol retornó a su vida y se aventuró como DT en el Once Municipal de El Salvador. Duró poco como técnico. A los pocos años comenzó a trabajar para la petrolera estadounidense Internacional Drilling Co.</p> <p>En Brasil instaló torres, después el trabajo lo llevó a África y el Golfo Pérsico donde encontró la muerte en 1971. Desde Dibbah, Omán, la noticia de France Presse golpeó duro a su hermano Jorge. “Asesinado Ted Robledo. Se abre investigación en el sultanato de Omán”.</p> <p>Ted Robledo fue un tipo muy reservado. Podía pasar horas en silencio, pese que además del español, dominaba el inglés y el alemán.</p> <p>La causa se cerró 3 meses después del juicio. El único acusado, el capitán del barco “Assahm” Heinz Bessenich fue absuelto por falta de pruebas. Tenía 42 años, era un “patiperro” y una historia ligada al fútbol eclipsada por el enorme brillo de su hermano Jorge.
