And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how, having taken Him by stealth, they might kill <i>Him</i>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>For they were saying, “Not during the feast, lest there will be an uproar of the people.” </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Anointed at Bethany<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:6-13; John 12:1-8)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And of Him being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases. See Leviticus 13.">a</a></span> of Him having reclined, a woman came having an alabaster flask of fragrant oil of pure nard, of great price. Having broken the alabaster flask, she poured <i>it</i> on His head. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And some were indignant within themselves: “Why has this the waste of the fragrant oil been made? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For this fragrant oil could have been sold for above three hundred denarii,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="A denarius was customarily a day's wage for a laborer (see Matthew 20:2)">b</a></span> and have been given to the poor.” And they were grumbling at her. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <span class="red">“Leave her alone; why do you cause trouble to her? She did a good work toward Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>For the poor you always have with you,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="See Deuteronomy 15:11">c</a></span> and you are able to do them good whenever you desire; but not always do you have Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>She did what she could. She came beforehand to anoint My body for the burial. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And truly I say to you, wherever the gospel shall be proclaimed in the whole world, what this <i>woman</i> has done also will be spoken of, for a memorial of her.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Zechariah 11:10-17; Matthew 26:14-16; Matthew 27:3-10)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might betray Him to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And having heard, they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he was seeking how he might deliver Him up conveniently. </p><p class="hdg">Preparing the Passover<br /><span class="cross">(Psalm 41:1-13; Matthew 26:17-25; Luke 22:7-13; John 13:18-30)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And on the first day of unleavened <i>bread</i>, when they were to sacrifice the Passover lamb, His disciples say to Him, “Where do You desire <i>that</i>, having gone, we should prepare that You may eat the Passover?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And He sends forth two of His disciples and says to them, <span class="red">“Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And wherever he might enter, say to the master of the house that the Teacher says, ‘Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And he will show you a large upper room, having been furnished <i>and</i> ready. And prepare for us there.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And his disciples went away, and came into the city, and found as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And evening having arrived, He comes with the Twelve. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And <i>as</i> they were reclining and were eating, Jesus said, <span class="red">“Truly I say to you that one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And He said to them, <span class="red">“<i>It is</i> one of the Twelve, the <i>one</i> dipping in the bowl with Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>For indeed the Son of Man goes as it has been written concerning Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed; <i>it were</i> better for him if that man had not been born.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">The Last Supper<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:26-30; Luke 22:14-23; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And as they were eating, having taken bread, having spoken a blessing, He broke <i>it</i> and gave <i>it</i> to them and said, <span class="red">“Take <i>it</i>; this is My body.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And having taken the cup, having given thanks, He gave <i>it</i> to them, and they all drank of it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And He said to them, <span class="red">“This is My blood of the covenant,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnd" title="BYZ and TR ‘new covenant’">d</a></span> which is being poured out for many. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Truly I say to you that never will I drink of the fruit of the vine <i>again</i>, until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:31-35; Luke 22:31-38; John 13:36-38)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And Jesus says to them, <span class="red">“You will all fall away,<span class="fn"><a href="#fne" title="BYZ and TR include ‘because of me this night’">e</a></span> for it has been written:</span></p><p class="indent1stlinered">‘I will strike the shepherd,</p><p class="indentred2"> and the sheep will be scattered.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnf" title="Zechariah 13:7">f</a></span> </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But after having arisen, I will go before you into Galilee.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And Peter was saying to Him, “Even if all will fall away, yet I <i>will</i> not.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jesus says to him, <span class="red">“Truly I say to you that now this night, before that <i>the</i> rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he kept saying emphatically, “If it is needful of me to die with You, never will I deny You.” And all of them were saying likewise also. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Prays at Gethsemane<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:36-46; Luke 22:39-46)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they come to a place, the name of which <i>is</i> Gethsemane; and He says to His disciples, <span class="red">“Sit here, while I shall pray.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And He takes Peter and James and John with Him; and He began to be greatly awe-struck and deeply distressed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And He says to them, <span class="red">“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here and watch.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And having gone forward a little, He fell upon the ground, and was praying that if it is possible, the hour might pass from Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And He was saying, <span class="red">“Abba, Father, all things <i>are</i> possible to You; take away this cup from Me; but not what I will, but what You <i>will</i>.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And He comes and finds them sleeping. And He says to Peter, <span class="red">“Simon are you asleep? Were you not able to watch one hour? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. For the spirit <i>is</i> willing, but the flesh <i>is</i> weak.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And again having gone away, He prayed, having said the same thing. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And again having returned, he found them sleeping. For their the eyes were heavy, and they did not know what they should answer Him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And He comes the third time and says to them, <span class="red">“Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of the sinful. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Rise, let us go. Behold, the <i>one</i> betraying Me has drawn near!”</span> </p><p class="hdg">The Betrayal of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:47-56; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And immediately while yet He is speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, comes up, and with Him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And the <i>one</i> delivering Him up had given to them a sign, saying: “Whomever I shall kiss is He; seize Him and lead <i>Him</i> away securely.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And having arrived, having come up to Him immediately, he says, “Rabbi!” And he kissed Him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And they laid hands on Him and seized Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And a certain one of those standing by, having drawn the sword, struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And Jesus answering said to them, <span class="red">“Are you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber, to capture Me? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But <i>it is</i> that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And all having left Him, fled. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And a certain young man was following Him, having cast a linen cloth about <i>his</i> naked <i>body</i>. And they seize him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>and having left behind the linen cloth, he fled naked. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 53:1-8; Matthew 26:57-68; John 18:19-24; 1 Peter 2:21-25)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>And they led away Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests, and the elders, and the scribes come together. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>And Peter followed Him from afar off, as far as to within the court of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>And the chief priests and all the Council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they were not finding <i>any</i>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>For many were bearing false testimony against Him, but their testimonies were not alike. <p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>And some having risen up, were bearing false testimony against Him, saying, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>“We heard Him saying, ‘I will destroy this temple, the <i>one</i> made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>And their testimony was thus not alike. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>And the high priest having stood up in the midst, questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not answer? What <i>is it</i> these testify against You?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-61.htm"><b>61</b></a></span>But He was silent, and did not answer.</p><p class="reg"> Again the high priest was questioning Him, and says to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed <i>One</i>?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-62.htm"><b>62</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <span class="red">“I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at <i>the</i> right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-63.htm"><b>63</b></a></span>And the high priest, having torn his garments, says, “Why have we need of witnesses? <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-64.htm"><b>64</b></a></span>You heard the blasphemy. What does it appear to you?”</p><p class="reg"> And all condemned Him to be deserving of death. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-65.htm"><b>65</b></a></span>And some began to spit upon Him, and to cover up His face, and to strike Him and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms. </p><p class="hdg">Peter Denies Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:69-75; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-18)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-66.htm"><b>66</b></a></span>And Peter being below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest comes, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-67.htm"><b>67</b></a></span>and having seen Peter warming himself, having looked at him, she says, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-68.htm"><b>68</b></a></span>But he denied <i>it</i>, saying, “I neither know nor even understand what you say.” And he went forth out into the porch; and the rooster crowed.<span class="fn"><a href="#fng" title="NE and WH do not include ‘and the rooster crowed’">g</a></span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-69.htm"><b>69</b></a></span>And the servant girl, having seen him, began to say again to those standing by, “This is <i>one</i> of them.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-70.htm"><b>70</b></a></span>But he denied <i>it</i> again.</p><p class="reg"> And after a little, again those standing by were saying to Peter, “Truly you are of them, for you also are a Galilean.”<span class="fn"><a href="#fnh" title="BYZ and TR include ‘and your speech is similar’">h</a></span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-71.htm"><b>71</b></a></span>But he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know this man whom you speak of!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-72.htm"><b>72</b></a></span>And immediately a rooster crowed for the second time.</p><p class="reg"> And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, <span class="red">“Before <i>the</i> rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”</span> And having broken down, he began to weep.<A name="fn"><br /><br /></p><A name="fna"></a><span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <span class="fnverse">3</span> <span class="footnote">Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases.
