Now the famine<MH7458> <i>was</i> severe<MH2389> in Samaria<MH8111>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Ahab<MH256> summoned<MH7121> Obadiah<MH5662>, who<MH834> <i>was</i> in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> the household<MH1004>. (Now Obadiah<MH5662> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>feared<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068> greatly<MH3966>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>for when Jezebel<MH348> killed<MH3772> the prophets<MH5030> of the LORD<MH3068>, Obadiah<MH5662> took<MH3947> a hundred<MH3967> prophets<MH5030> and hid<MH2244> them by fifties<MH2572> in a cave<MH4631>, and provided<MH3557> them with bread<MH3899> and water<MH4325>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Ahab<MH256> said<MH559> to Obadiah<MH5662>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> through the land<MH776> to all<MH3605> the springs<MH4599> of water<MH4325> and to all<MH3605> the river<MH5158a> valleys<MH5158a>; perhaps<MH194> we will find<MH4672> grass<MH2682> and keep<MH2421a> the horses<MH5483b> and mules<MH6505> alive<MH2421a>, and not <i>have to</i> kill<MH3772> some<MH4480> of the cattle<MH929>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So they divided<MH2505a> the land<MH776> between them to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>survey<MH5674a> it; Ahab<MH256> went<MH1980> one<MH259> way<MH1870> by<MH905> himself<MH905>, and Obadiah<MH5662> went<MH1980> another<MH259> way<MH1870> by<MH905> himself<MH905>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now as Obadiah<MH5662> was on the way<MH1870>, behold<MH2009>, Elijah<MH452> met<MH7122> him, and he recognized<MH5234> him and fell<MH5307> on his face<MH6440> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Is it you, Elijah<MH452> my master<MH113>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to him, &#8220;It is I. Go<MH1980>, say<MH559> to your master<MH113>, &#8216;Behold<MH2009>, Elijah<MH452> <i>is here.</i>&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>sin<MH2398> have I committed<MH2398>, that you are handing<MH5414, 3027> your servant<MH5650> over to Ahab<MH256>, to put<MH4191> me to<MH4191> death<MH4191>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>As <i>surely as</i> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> lives<MH2416a>, there<MH3426> is<MH3426> no<MH518> nation<MH1471> or kingdom<MH4467> to which<MH834> my master<MH113> has not sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to search<MH1245> for you; and whenever they say<MH559>, &#8216;He is not <i>here,</i>&#8217; he makes the kingdom<MH4467> or nation<MH1471> swear<MH7650> that they could not find<MH4672> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Yet now<MH6258> you are saying<MH559>, &#8216;Go<MH1980>, say<MH559> to your master<MH113>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, Elijah<MH452> <i>is here!</i>&#8221;&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And it will come<MH1961> about<MH1961> when I leave<MH1980, 4480> you that the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> will carry<MH5375> you to where<MH5921, 834> I do not know<MH3045>; so when I come<MH935> and inform<MH5046> Ahab<MH256> and he cannot<MH3808> find<MH4672> you, he will kill<MH2026> me, though <i>I,</i> your servant<MH5650>, have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>feared<MH3372a> the LORD<MH3068> from my youth<MH5271>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Has it not been reported<MH5046> to my master<MH113> what<MH834> I did<MH6213a> when Jezebel<MH348> killed<MH2026> the prophets<MH5030> of the LORD<MH3068>, that I hid<MH2244> a hundred<MH3967> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>prophets<MH5030> of the LORD<MH3068> by fifties<MH2572> in a cave<MH4631>, and provided<MH3557> them with bread<MH3899> and water<MH4325>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Yet now<MH6258> you are saying<MH559>, &#8216;Go<MH1980>, say<MH559> to your master<MH113>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, Elijah<MH452> <i>is here</i>&#8221;&#8217;; he will then kill<MH2026> me!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> said<MH559>, &#8220;As <i>surely as</i> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> lives<MH2416a>, before<MH6440> whom<MH834> I stand<MH5975>, I will certainly<MH3588> present<MH7200> myself to him today<MH3117>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Obadiah<MH5662> went<MH1980> to meet<MH7122> Ahab<MH256> and informed<MH5046> him; then Ahab<MH256> went<MH1980> to meet<MH7122> Elijah<MH452>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When Ahab<MH256> saw<MH7200> Elijah<MH452>, Ahab<MH256> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Is this<MH2088> you, the cause<MH5916> of<MH5916> disaster<MH5916> to Israel<MH3478>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, &#8220;I have not brought<MH5916> disaster<MH5916> to<MH5916> Israel<MH3478>, but you and your father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004> <i>have,</i> because you have abandoned<MH5800a> the commandments<MH4687> of the LORD<MH3068> and you have followed<MH1980, 310> the Baals<MH1168a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, send<MH7971> <i>orders and</i> gather<MH6908> to me all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> at Mount<MH2022> Carmel<MH3760>, <i>together</i> with 450<MH702, 3967, 2572> prophets<MH5030> of Baal<MH1168a> and four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> prophets<MH5030> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>the Asherah<MH842>, who eat<MH398> at Jezebel&#8217;s<MH348> table<MH7979>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">God or Baal on Mount Carmel</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Ahab<MH256> sent<MH7971> <i>orders</i> among all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> and brought<MH6908> the prophets<MH5030> together<MH6908> at Mount<MH2022> Carmel<MH3760>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> approached<MH5066> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> and said<MH559>, &#8220;How<MH4970> long<MH5704, 4970> are you going to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>struggle<MH6452b> with the two<MH8147> choices<MH5589b>? If<MH518> the LORD<MH3068> is God<MH430>, follow<MH1980, 310> Him; but if<MH518> Baal<MH1168a>, follow<MH1980, 310> him.&#8221; But the people<MH5971a> did not answer<MH6030a> him <i>so much as</i> a word<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, &#8220;I alone<MH905> am left<MH3498> as a prophet<MH5030> of the LORD<MH3068>, while Baal&#8217;s<MH1168a> prophets<MH5030> are 450<MH702, 3967, 2572> men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now have them give<MH5414> us two<MH8147> oxen<MH6499>; and have them choose<MH977> the one<MH259> ox<MH6499> for themselves and cut<MH5408> it up<MH5408>, and place<MH7760> it on the wood<MH6086>, but put<MH7760> no<MH3808> fire<MH784> <i>under it;</i> and I will prepare<MH6213a> the other<MH259> ox<MH6499> and lay<MH5414> it on the wood<MH6086>, and I will not put<MH7760> a fire<MH784> <i>under it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then you call<MH7121> on the name<MH8034> of your god<MH430>, and I will call<MH7121> on the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>; and the God<MH430> who<MH834> answers<MH6030a> by fire<MH784>, He is God<MH430>.&#8221; And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> replied<MH6030, 559>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>That is a good<MH2896a> idea<MH1697>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to the prophets<MH5030> of Baal<MH1168a>, &#8220;Choose<MH977> the one<MH259> ox<MH6499> for yourselves and prepare<MH6213a> it first<MH7223>, since<MH3588> <i>there are</i> many<MH7227a> <i>of</i> you, and call<MH7121> on the name<MH8034> of your god<MH430>, but put<MH7760> no<MH3808> fire<MH784> <i>under the ox.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then they took<MH3947> the ox<MH6499> which<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>was given<MH5414> them and they prepared<MH6213a> it, and they called<MH7121> on the name<MH8034> of Baal<MH1168a> from morning<MH1242> until<MH5704> noon<MH6672a>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;O Baal<MH1168a>, answer<MH6030a> us!&#8221; But there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> voice<MH6963> and no<MH369> one<MH369> answered<MH6030a>. And they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>limped<MH6452b> about<MH5921> the altar<MH4196> which<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>they had made<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And at noon<MH6672a> Elijah<MH452> ridiculed<MH2048> them and said<MH559>, &#8220;Call<MH7121> out<MH7121> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963>, since<MH3588> he is a god<MH430>; undoubtedly<MH3588> he is attending<MH7879> to<MH7879> business<MH7879>, or is on the way<MH5509>, or is on a journey<MH1870>. Perhaps<MH194> he is asleep<MH3463>, and will awaken<MH3364>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So they cried<MH7121> out<MH7121> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963>, and cut<MH1413> themselves according to their custom<MH4941> with swords<MH2719> and lances<MH7420> until<MH5704> blood<MH1818> gushed<MH8210> out<MH8210> on them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>When midday<MH6672a> was<MH5674a> past<MH5674a>, they raved<MH5012> until<MH5704> the time of the offering<MH5927> of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice<MH4503>; but there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> voice<MH6963>, no<MH369> one<MH369> answered<MH6030a>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>no<MH369> one<MH369> paid<MH7182> attention<MH7182>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, &#8220;Come<MH5066> forward<MH5066> to me.&#8221; So all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> came<MH5066> forward<MH5066> to him. And he repaired<MH7495> the altar<MH4196> of the LORD<MH3068> which had been torn<MH2040> down<MH2040>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> took<MH3947> twelve<MH8147, 6240> stones<MH68>, corresponding to the number<MH4557> of the tribes<MH7626> of the sons<MH1121> of Jacob<MH3290>, to whom<MH834> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> had come<MH1961>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Israel<MH3478> shall be your name<MH8034>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And with the stones<MH68> he built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>; and he made<MH6213a> a trench<MH8585a> around<MH5439> the altar<MH4196>, large<MH1004> enough <MH1004>to hold<MH1004> two <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>measures<MH5429> of seed<MH2233>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then he laid<MH6186a> out<MH6186a> the wood<MH6086>, and he cut<MH5408> the ox<MH6499> in<MH5408> pieces<MH5408> and placed<MH7760> <i>it</i> on the wood<MH6086>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Fill<MH4390> four<MH702> large<MH3537> jars<MH3537> with water<MH4325> and pour<MH3332> <i>it</i> on the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> and on the wood<MH6086>.&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Do<MH8138> it a<MH8138> second<MH8138> time<MH8138>,&#8221; so they did<MH8138> it a<MH8138> second<MH8138> time<MH8138>. Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;Do<MH8027> it a<MH8027> third<MH8027> time<MH8027>,&#8221; so they did<MH8027> it a<MH8027> third<MH8027> time<MH8027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>The water<MH4325> flowed<MH1980> around<MH5439> the altar<MH4196>, and he also<MH1571> filled<MH4390> the trench<MH8585a> with water<MH4325>. <p class="hdg">Elijah&#8217;s Prayer</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then at the time<MH3117> of the offering<MH5927> of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice<MH4503>, Elijah<MH452> the prophet<MH5030> approached<MH5066> and said<MH559>, &#8220;LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of Abraham<MH85>, Isaac<MH3327>, and Israel<MH3478>, today<MH3117> let it be known<MH3045> that You are God<MH430> in Israel<MH3478> and that I am Your servant<MH5650>, and <i>that</i> I have done<MH6213a> all<MH3605> these<MH428> things<MH1697> at Your word<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Answer<MH6030a> me, LORD<MH3068>, answer<MH6030a> me, so that this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> may know<MH3045> that You, LORD<MH3068>, are God<MH430>, and <i>that</i> You have turned<MH5437> their heart<MH3820> back<MH322>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then the fire<MH784> of the LORD<MH3068> fell<MH5307> and consumed<MH398> the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> and the wood<MH6086>, and the stones<MH68> and the dust<MH6083>; and it licked<MH3897> up<MH3897> the water<MH4325> that was in the trench<MH8585a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> saw<MH7200> <i>this,</i> they fell<MH5307> on their faces<MH6440>; and they said<MH559>, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068>, He is God<MH430>; the LORD<MH3068>, He is God<MH430>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Then Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Seize<MH8610> the prophets<MH5030> of Baal<MH1168a>; do not let one<MH376> of them escape<MH4422>.&#8221; So they seized<MH8610> them; and Elijah<MH452> brought<MH3381> them down<MH3381> to the brook<MH5158a> Kishon<MH7028>, and slaughtered<MH7819> them there<MH8033>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Now Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to Ahab<MH256>, &#8220;Go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354>; for there is the sound<MH6963> of the roar<MH1995> of a <i>heavy</i> shower<MH1653>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/18-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>So Ahab<MH256> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354>.
