The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Golden State, which dropped to 26-16.</em></p> <p>• The Bulls and Warriors entered Friday’s game dead even in overall rebound rate, corralling 51.6 percent of missed shots, tied for sixth in the league. The undersized Warriors, playing without Andrew Bogut all season, have cleared a league-leading 75.1 percent of available defensive rebounds; the Bulls have feasted on second-chance opportunities thanks to the active, physical and long Joakim Noah/Carlos Boozer/Luol Deng front line, which averages nearly eight offensive rebounds combined per game.</p> <p>Those numbers suggested the first meeting between the teams this season should have been fairly even on the glass, or at least hard-fought. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Even with Deng out nursing a hamstring injury, the Bulls dominated the interior on both ends, winning the rebound battle 56-37 and outscoring Golden State 30-6 on second-chance points. This was one team simply bullying the other. Jimmy Butler, starting in place of Deng, tallied a career-high 12 rebounds, combining with Boozer and Noah to outrebound the trio of Carl Landry David Lee and Harrison Barnes 41-16. (Kent Smith/Getty Images)</p></div> <p><strong>By <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130126152158/http://nba.si.com/author/benjamingolliver/" target="_blank">Ben Golliver</a></strong></p> <p>Hours after the New Orleans Hornets announced Thursday that the franchise would be adopting the “Pelicans” moniker following the 2012-13 season, the Charlotte Bobcats indicated they would explore bringing the “Hornets” nickname back to Charlotte.</p> <p>Bobcats president and COO Fred Whitfield released a statement Thursday indicating his franchise would investigate acquiring the nickname, which originally belonged to the Charlotte Hornets before the franchise relocated to New Orleans in 2002.</p> <p>“We are aware of the impending change regarding the team nickname in New Orleans,” Whitfield’s statement read. “We are currently in contact with the NBA and conducting our own due diligence relative to this matter. We will not have any further comment until we have completed this process.”</p> <p>That due diligence, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130126152158/http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/01/24/3811106/hornets-name-change-leaves-bobcats.html" target="_blank">according to the <em>Charlotte Observer</em></a>, includes a survey of season ticket-holders.</p> <p>Bobcats owner Michael Jordan indicated in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130126152158/http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/11/29/3696706/charlotte-might-pounce-if-hornets.html" target="_blank">a Nov. 2012 interview with the <em>Observer</em></a> that he would have interest in reclaiming the nickname.</p> <blockquote><p>“It’s definitely an interest down the road, but right now it’s the New Orleans Hornets,” Jordan told the Observer. “We would definitely entertain the opportunity. Watson <span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">for violating its anti-flopping policy on Friday.</span></p> <p>Watson’s flop occurred in the fourth quarter of a 91-83 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday in Minnesota. With 9:05 remaining in the fourth quarter and Brooklyn leading 72-68, Watson over-exaggerated contact from Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea while playing on-ball defense on the perimeter. Barea used his right arm to clear Watson away from him as he set up to use a high screen and Watson flung himself backwards, falling to the floor. Barea was whistled for an offensive foul.</p> <p>This type of flop was specifically called out in the NBA’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130126152158/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I65Lqjh4fo" target="_blank">official video introducing its flopping policy</a>. In the video, Clippers guard Chris Paul was called out for trying to sell a charge in a similar manner.</p> <p>“As the highlighted defensive player, No. 3 in the red uniform, defends the driving offensive player, he feels slight contact and then launches himself back to the floor,” the video’s narrator explained. “This reaction by the defensive player is an over-embellishment of marginal contact and is intended to draw an unearned offensive foul on his opponent.”</p> <p>Barea has been warned twice this season for flopping in this exact manner. How badly do the Lakers need to trade Dwight Howard, on a a scale of 1 (no need whatsoever) to 10 (must trade him)?</strong></p> <p><strong>Rob Mahoney: </strong>1. I can appreciate how costly it would be if Howard opts to bolt in free agency after the season. I just don’t see how a frenzied, failed regular season is reason enough to bail on the star that could lead the franchise for the next half-decade, much less how any recent events <strong>necessitate</strong> that the Lakers trade him. This team has crumbled at the feet of expectation, and Howard — with everything from his general attitude to his slighter defensive form — has been party to that. But trading him when his market value is at its lowest because of his injured back and impending free agency doesn’t make sense. Seeing the play develop, both Arron Afflalo and Glen Davis tracked DeRozan into the left corner, where he was launched an off-balance, step-back, fade-away jumper over Davis with one second remaining on the clock. The change will be accompanied by a red, blue and gold color scheme that will replace the current teal, purple and blue design. How has your favorite team fared? Below are grades for all 30 teams. Note: Grades take into account performance relative to preseason expectations. (All stats and records are through Jan. 23.)</p> <p><strong>Atlanta Hawks: B</strong><br/> <em>24-18, No. 6 in the East</em></p> <p>One of the biggest offseason winners hasn’t been bad on the court, either. The Hawks are firmly in the playoff picture and should remain there even after losing the electric Lou Williams to a season-ending knee injury. Josh Smith’s uncertain future hangs over this team, but general manager Danny Ferry must be pleased with how well his value-oriented offseason moves played out.</p> <p><strong>Boston Celtics: D+</strong><br/> <em>20-21, No. 8 in the East</em></p> <p>Is there anything working like it’s supposed to in Boston? The good news: So many players have underperformed in so many ways that there’s not just one whipping boy. Kevin Garnett can only play so many minutes; Paul Pierce is marginally worse than he was last year on offense; Rajon Rondo has been infuriating more often than he’s been game-changing; none of the new veteran parts (Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and Leandro Barbosa) have stood out in good ways; and the above-average defense hasn’t been quite good enough to cover up for the below-average offense. Coach Doc Rivers has seemingly played every motivational card in his deck just to keep his team near .500.
