Eighteen months ago, the activist, writer and star of the “Semi-Homemade” show on the Food Network was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through early intervention and discovery — which then led to the decision for a double mastectomy — Lee is now cancer-free. “It’s been quite a year,” Lee told Footwear News. “I have to say that I’m grateful to be on the other side of it. I don’t wish this upon anyone. It’s really important that a cure is found not just for breast cancer, but also for all forms of cancer.” Lee is a survivor who will be honored at this year’s annual QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale” charity gala on Oct. 25, during which she will receive the Jodi Fisher Humanitarian Award. The honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in the fight against breast cancer and also pays homage to Fisher, who died in 2009 following a long battle with leukemia. Lee was apt to recognize Fisher’s memory and her contribution as the visionary behind FFANY Shoes on Sale and her role as the VP of PR at Nine West and Jones Apparel Group. “Jodi passed away at 49 years old, and Read More...

Top 7 NBA Stars to Watch for Sneaker Style This Season

The NBA season tips off tonight, ushering in a new year of tough play on the court and a new crop of must-have kicks for sneakerheads.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Athletic & Outdoor

Focus

North America

Chris Paul

James Harden

Kevin Durant

Kyrie Irving

LeBron James

Paul George

Stephen Curry

<media:group> </media:group>
The NBA season tips off tonight, ushering in not only a new year of tough play on the court but also a new crop of must-have kicks for sneakerheads. While action on the court has not yet begun, plenty has happened in the offseason and preseason — such as endorsement deals and signature shoe unveils — to make sneaker fans wonder who will have the best sneakers throughout the season. James Harden in his signature Adidas sneakers, the Harden Vol. 1. The league will be without one of its stars, Kobe Bryant, for the first time in 20 years, disappointing fans looking for him to lace up any player’s editions. But for fans of the exclusivity and hype of player’s editions, they could expect to see some heat on the feet of a player that frequently wears them, LeBron James. And although his next signature shoe has not yet been unveiled, Nike is sure to drop a new sneaker for its star athlete (as well as one for James’ teammate, Kyrie Irving). Nike’s second biggest star — and newest member of the Golden State Warriors — Kevin Durant debuted his latest signature shoe during the 2016 playoffs, but is already turning heads with the colorways inspired by his Read More...

Look for These 7 NBA Stars to Have the Hottest Sneaker Style This Season

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Athletic & Outdoor

Focus

North America

Chris Paul

James Harden

Kevin Durant

Kyrie Irving

LeBron James

Paul George

Stephen Curry

<media:group> </media:group>
Read More...

Kering Revenues Jump To $3.54 Billion

The house’s luxury sales rose 11.3 % in the third quarter

Gucci gold fur slides.

News

Business

François-Henri Pinault

Kering

Europe

Gucci

st laurent

<media:group> </media:group>
Kering’s luxury revenues grew 11.3 percent in the third quarter, its highest quarterly organic sales growth rate in three years, as Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent bucked a morose economic environment to record strong double-digit sales increases. The market-beating performance helped propel Kering’s overall revenues up 10 percent in the third quarter to 3.18 billion euros, or $3.54 billion. Sales were up 10.5 percent in organic terms during the three-month period. Gucci, which accounts for more than a third of the group’s revenues, continued to reap the benefits of the strategy launched last year by creative director Alessandro Michele and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri. The brand saw organic revenues increase 17 percent in the third quarter, boosted by the success of handbags like the GG Marmont, the Sylvie and the Dionysus. Saint Laurent was up 33.9 percent in the quarter, with permanent collections enjoying continued popularity and customers responding well to new handbag models such as the Sunset Monogramme. Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen each posted growth of around 10 percent or more, while Bottega Veneta saw sales drop 10.9 percent. The sport and lifestyle division registered a 9.3 percent rise in organic sales in the three months ended Sept. 30, with Puma Read More...

10 Fun Shoes For Emoji-Loving Kids

Let their feet do the talking.

Erin E. The colorful icons have taken the children’s fashion world by storm, showing up on everything from T-shirts and socks to backpacks and cell-phone cases. It’s no surprise that footwear brands have embraced the trend in a big way, serving up adorable styles decorated with both appliqués and allover prints. From sneakers to flip-flops, these fun shoes add a playful note to any outfit. To help you lock down the look, we rounded up some of the market’s best emoji-inspired footwear — from designer styles to more affordable options from discount stores such as Target and Walmart. Never one to miss a hot trend, shoe king Steve Madden offers his take: a sleek metallic zip-up sneaker decorated with colorful patches. Tween brand Justice, meanwhile, jazzed up a simple black canvas high-top with pizza, peace-sign and heart appliqués. Steve Madden’s ‘Tcobrah’ metallic sneaker, $65. Skechers went all out with its popular Burst athletic shoe, covering not only the upper but the laces, too, with a whimsical emoji print. Sandal label Tkees took a subtler approach, detailing the straps of its simple leather flip-flops with small ornaments. Arora, founder of Kabaccha, was raised in a family of footwear craftsmen. He honed his skills by studying shoe design in London and Italy, debuting his own direct-to-consumer online business in fall ’15 with fresh takes on classic looks. “So many [brands] make the same black and brown shoes,” said Arora. “Color is my whole concept. It’s a vibrant expression of one’s personality.” Coupled with this, Arora said, he’s able to offer lightweight, comfort-driven Italian dress shoes at competitive prices by eliminating the middleman. His men’s line retails for under $300, with women’s shoes priced at under $275. Now, Arora is reaching out to consumers via a Kickstarter campaign to help him fund the next phase of the business — a spring ’17 expansion of his men’s line and the addition of companion women’s styles. “Women should be multi-dimensional,” said Arora. “They don’t need only heels to be sexy.” Men’s wingtip with brogue detailing. The campaign, which kicked off on Oct. 20, has 36 days to go. For a pledge of $189, consumers can snag a single pair of shoes, while a pledge of $4,900 gets you the entire men’s collection. For the actress and singer, whose grandmother dealt with the disease, the cause is a crucial one. “Breast cancer can affect so many women, and there’s not a lot of awareness,” she said. “Young people especially don’t know the signs, so [supporting this cause] is definitely important to me since I have so many young women who are fans.” In addition to starring in national PSAs, Zendaya’s brand contributed shoes to the fundraiser, which has raised more than $50 million for first-step breast cancer research over the past 23 years. The star is the official PSA spokesperson for “FFANY Shoes on Sale.” Although just 20 years old, Zendaya told Footwear News that she is completely comfortable in the limelight. “I take the job of being a role model very seriously,” she said. “I just want to give young people a positive person to look up to. Before the market open on Tuesday, the Baltimore-based brand reported Q3 results that topped market watchers’ estimates, but also a lower-than-expected Q4 outlook, which led investors to unload the stock. Under Armour’s shares fell more than 16 percent in early-morning trading and remained down 13 percent, to $33, as of 10:30 a.m. ET. While the firm reiterated its full-year guidance, announced in May on the heels of Sports Authority’s completed liquidation, UA CFO Chip Molloy provided a more tepid Q4 outlook on the company’s conference call. Molloy called for 20 percent revenue growth in the fourth quarter, below Wall Street’s predictions of 22 percent growth. “We believe the strength of our brands and an increased breadth of head-to-toe product offerings position us for another quarter of strong growth in what has been a challenging North American retail environment,” Molloy added. Under Armour said its Q3 net income advanced 28 percent in the third quarter of 2016, to $128 million, or 29 cents per diluted share, topping forecasts for diluted earnings per share of 25 cents. After both kickers botched potentially game-winning field goal attempts in overtime during Sunday night’s 6-6 tie between the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” crew got to talking yesterday about whether they could convert such a kick themselves. Just before the start of the Texans-Broncos matchup, each former NFL player on ESPN’s panel made an attempt, including Steve Young, Trent Dilfer, Charles Woodson and Matt Hasselback. Only Randy Moss had the goods. The retired Hall of Fame wide receiver casually drilled two 28-yard field goals in a row — while wearing dress shoes. Afterward, 39-year-old Moss did a little dance on the field to celebrate. Sager, known for his colorful can’t-miss attire, has been battling acute myleloid leukemia since 2014. While he hasn’t been well enough to continue reporting, Nike is making sure his presence is still felt. Tonight, beginning at 7 p.m., 100 pairs of a limited-edition SagerStrong Air Force 1 will go up for auction through Auction Cause and TNT/Bleacher Report. The shoes have a paisley-print upper with brightly colored accents, reminiscent of one of Sager’s fearless courtside looks. Sager and his wife, Stacy, went to Nike with the idea of creating the shoes earlier this summer. Perry, who celebrates her 31st birthday today, has always been partial to wild costumes since her breakthrough in 2007. The singer and designer Jeremy Scott forged a friendship years ago, so she often looks to him for crazy outfits for the red carpet and the stage. This year, Perry wore two different pairs of cowgirl boots by Scott for the American Country Music Awards, where she performed with Dolly Parton. For the period ended Sept. 30, consolidated sales were down 3.7 percent, to 757.7 million euros, or $841 million, compared with 786.9 million euros, or $873.4 million, in first nine months of 2015. At constant exchange rates and including the related effects of hedging contracts, sales would have decreased 4.4 percent, to 751.9 million euros, or $834.6 million. “As expected, the sales figures for the nine months reflect a volatile and uncertain economic and financial environment, characterized by the persistent weakness of consumption in many important markets for luxury goods,” said Diego Della Valle, chairman and chief executive officer. “The fall season started only in the second half of September; the collections now in stores are registering positive feedback. But today the label has unveiled an exclusive collaboration with the supermodel, The Gigi Boot. And you can buy it right now. The high heeled, hiker style bootie was co-designed by Hadid herself and comes complete with a stacked heel, metallic eyelets and two-toned laces designed to wrap around the ankle. There are three fabrications: black crocodile print calf leather, metallic silver “iron specchio” and bronze metallic, “copper glass.” The style brings to mind a very shiny Timberland boot. A short film directed by James Franco and starring Hadid, titled #DoItRight, teased on social media last week, also debuts in full. Shot at Brooklyn’s iconic Gleason’s Gym, the film features a jabbing, kicking Gigi in the ring, wearing the boot, natch. The soundtrack was composed by Martin Solveig and Tkay Maidza and the concept was inspired by Hadid’s real-life workout regimen. The Brazilian brand, which last year was named the official flip-flops of Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, has expanded the partnership to help celebrate the launch of Disney’s upcoming film “Moana.” In addition to creating a special series of “Moana” flip-flops featuring characters from the animated movie, Havaianas will also serve as a sponsor of the world premiere in Hollywood on Nov. 14. There, it will have a presence on the red carpet and at a special premiere party. Of the partnership (which is a first for the brand), Havaianas USA president Marcio Moura said in a statement, “The opportunity is a natural fit, not only because of our existing Disney Alliance partnership, but also because the vibrant and tropical setting of ‘Moana’ is synonymous with the spirit of Havaianas.” “Moana” is slated to premiere in U.S. theaters on Nov. 23. The animated film follows the adventures of a spirited Polynesian girl who sets sail in search of a fabled land, with characters voiced by stars like Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Scherzinger and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho in the title role. Original songs were co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative mind beyond the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Havaianas’ “Moana” flip-flops are available now for purchase, for $20 Read More...

Inside the Event That Sells 75,000 Pairs of Shoes

For the first time, FFANY’s Shoes on Sale is open to the public this year.

Giuseppe Zanotti's suede stiletto sandal is one of the many luxe styles on offer at the FFANY Shoes on Sale gala.

Awards

Parties

FN Spy

North America

FFANY Shoes on Sale

QVC

Zendaya

<media:group> </media:group>
The 23rd annual QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale” fundraising gala returns this week, featuring an even larger assortment of footwear for sale than ever. More than 87,000 pairs have been donated by 85 brands, 16 of which are new to the event. Typically, about 75,000 pairs of shoes are sold during the live gala and accompanying QVC telethon, said Mike George, president and CEO of QVC. He estimated that this year’s event could add from $1 million to $5 million to the total of $50 million raised by the fundraiser in its history. FFANY Shoes on Sale will be held Oct. 25, once again at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, hosted by QVC personality Jill Martin. And in an unusual twist, the complementary three-hour QVC telethon, which typically runs after the gala, aired last week, on Oct. 20. Newcomers among the 85 brands participating in Shoes on Sale include Daya by Zendaya (who is also the 2016 PSA spokesperson), Carter’s, Fila, Tretorn, ED by Ellen Degeneres and Ann Marino by Bettye Muller. In addition, the fundraiser has doubled its selection of men’s footwear. A Daya by Zendaya heel, available at the FFANY Shoes on Sale fundraiser. Teddy Safarian, who tattoos out of Think Tank South in Littleton, is known on the Internet as the “Boost God.” Since receiving the name from a follower on social media, Safarian has created a clothing line using that name and become the go-to expert voice on all shoes featuring the acclaimed midsole technology. The 34-year-old, who is also a longtime sneaker addict, has more than 80 pairs of Boost styles in his collection, which is growing almost daily. Safarian — who admitted to being turned off by today’s sneakerhead culture up until buying his first pair of Boost-infused shoes this year — was introduced to the midsole compound while visiting Round Two, a Los Angeles-based consignment shop. While there, Safarian picked up a white monochrome Adidas NMD. After trying them on he bought black NMDs the same day, and four pairs of Triple White Ultra Boosts that week. “I bought my first pair of Ultra Boosts in May, which is laughable when I think about how much money I’ve spent,” he said.
