I welcome constructive feedback!

Years ago, one of my managers handed me a thumb drive with a bunch of utilities, installers, and scripts for our environment and I thought it was a cool idea. The problem was it was 16 gigs which, despite being pretty big at the time, was fairly limited. The bigger issue was we tossed these drives on our keychains and stuffed them in our pockets. Most of them didn’t survive for more than 2 months and the idea was kind of abandoned.

It was a great idea, though. It’s so handy to have a massive digital toolbox you can carry in your pocket. Utilities may be easy to download, but if you already have it on you it’ll save the time and trouble of locating, downloading, extracting, etc. May not be much, but in today’s environments 5 or 10 minutes here or there can really add up.

Another benefit is with larger capacity drives out today, you can do emergency backups of systems that are one reboot away from being a real headache to recover data from. Ever done a mad dash to find a drive to back up user data to? Yeah, me too…

Recently, I started thinking about this and it hit me how tech has come a long way since then. Both in terms of removable storage and supporting applications. The idea really took off when I discovered Ventoy, a brilliant utility that lets you drop multiple ISO files on a drive and boot to any one of your choosing through a GRUB boot menu. I also found that Corsair makes a rugged drive with great performance.

Basically, you start by building your drive with the Ventoy utility (1.0.14 or higher for this tutorial) and partition off the space you want for your non-ISO utilities. You can just run everything from one partition with no problems, but I wanted a way to securely carry some of my utilities because I occasionally use it to transfer customer data and other confidential files. So, I secure the non-Ventoy partition with Bitlocker. Then, I install Portable Apps, set up the apps, then copy the rest of my data over.

It looks like a lot of steps, but it’s really simple. Most guides I write are intended for processes that even the simplest omission can cause compliance nightmares, and it’s hard to turn that off.

edit
I forgot to mention that I’m using a 256 GB Corsair Survivor Stealth drive. They seem rugged enough to survive rattling around in a pocket with keys and wallets and whatnot… The performance of the drive has been excellent so far, as well.

Step 1: Set up Ventoy Step 1 - Download

Download the Ventoy installer from Download . The only catch is that they can’t be more than one directory deep on the drive. Any more than that and the loader can’t see them. There is an option to manually navigate the folder structure, but it’s easier to keep them within the first directory level.

You can also add programs that aren’t native to Portable Apps via its installer by creating a folder for it under F:\\PortableApps (replace F with whatever drive letter your Portable Apps partition maps to) and drop the exe file (and any supporting files) in the folder. For example, I added ProduKey from Nirsoft by unzipping the download to F:\\PortableApps\\ProduKey. The application will show up in the menu when you run the PortableApps Launcher.

The Portable Apps platform is quite powerful and has many capabilities beyond just serving standalone applications. I recommend checking out their documentation so you can get the full benefit of these features.

@type":"HowToStep
Set up Ventoy Step 1 - Download

Download the Ventoy installer from https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html.

The only catch is that they can’t be more than one directory deep on the drive. Any more than that and the loader can’t see them. There is an option to manually navigate the folder structure, but it’s easier to keep them within the first directory level.

You can also add programs that aren’t native to Portable Apps via its installer by creating a folder for it under F:\PortableApps (replace F with whatever drive letter your Portable Apps partition maps to) and drop the exe file (and any supporting files) in the folder. For example, I added ProduKey from Nirsoft by unzipping the download to F:\PortableApps\ProduKey. The application will show up in the menu when you run the PortableApps Launcher.

The Portable Apps platform is quite powerful and has many capabilities beyond just serving standalone applications. I recommend checking out their documentation so you can get the full benefit of these features.

   7 Spice ups

  robert-zed (Robert Zed) July 3, 2020, 3:01pm 2

Good write up.
