class="rich-text global-paragraph-style--reader">
It’s an exciting day at LinkedIn and for our guest today—Shane Evans, the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) of Gong. Today, we’re hosting a Sales Connect customer event in New York City where we are thrilled that Shane will be sharing his expertise in a breakout session.

While we couldn’t extend invitations to everyone in our network for the NYC event, we invite you to join us for the live stream of the keynote at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET. If you can't watch it live, it will also be available for replay after the event.

I was thrilled to speak to Shane because first, he’s had a meteoric sales career and second, because he’s the CRO of an organization that sells sales technology to other sellers. That means that he’s not only steeped in how to lead large revenue teams, but he’s also fully plugged into the mindset of his peers—Gong customers and many joint Gong and LinkedIn Sales Navigator customers, too.

Needless to say, the conversation was both thoughtful and insightful—leaving me incredibly inspired. I hope it does the same for you.

Now, let’s dive in.

We have a tradition at LinkedIn when we introduce people and that is, “Tell us something not on your LinkedIn profile?”

One thing you won’t find on my LinkedIn profile is that I’m an outdoor enthusiast. Living in Utah, I’m surrounded by countless outdoor adventures right in my backyard. There’s always something active to dive into!

For me, these experiences are the best way to recharge and connect with friends, family, and colleagues. Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to take my entire leadership team on an offsite trip to Lake Powell. We all crammed onto a houseboat, and you’d be amazed at how quickly you bond when you’re sharing a space with 15 to 20 people and just a couple of bathrooms!

It turned into an incredible bonding experience where we learned things about each other that might have taken years otherwise. I’m lucky to have a fantastic team that embraces the blend of business, leisure, and fun.

The CRO role is a relatively new role that has emerged in the sales function. I’m curious about your perspectives on the CRO role and how you see the role evolving in the future?

When we think about traditional roles, the Head of Sales typically manages the sales processes within an organization. In contrast, the modern CRO resembles a President, overseeing end-to-end revenue across all functions while ensuring alignment and seamless execution throughout the entire customer journey.

To illustrate the difference, Heads of Sales often have specific functional areas reporting to the CEO, while a CRO must navigate and integrate all these functions. The CRO role is evolving, requiring a cross-functional mindset to break down silos and address process or technical limitations.

One major challenge I see in many organizations is that even with a CRO in place, teams often operate in silos. Operations, functions, and tools can become isolated, stopping where each department ends. To truly leverage the CRO role—regardless of reporting structure—it’s crucial to adopt an end-to-end perspective. This means analyzing data across the entire customer journey and optimizing it from start to finish.

This is where the real opportunity lies: redefining how organizations can function with a modern approach to revenue operations and flows. It’s an exciting time to be a CRO because there’s the potential to push boundaries and redefine what it means to operate in today’s environment. We have the chance to envision and shape the future of our roles in meaningful ways.

Could you provide an example of how your role as a CRO enables you to address a common challenge in a way that a head of sales, with their more focused responsibilities, might not be able to?

Let me share two examples.

First, let's talk about presales. In a CRO role within a presales environment, conflicts often arise between the Head of Sales and the CMO over lead attribution. Who gets credit for a lead—the marketing team or the sales team? As a CRO, your focus shifts from attribution to partnership. You’re looking at the entire process—from generating market awareness to converting leads—as an end-to-end pipeline.

Now, on to post-sales. The Head of Sales usually has a limited view, focusing primarily on their sales team without considering the broader picture. In a post-sales context, they might overlook critical areas like value adoption, realization, retention, and expansion, especially when working with customer success teams.

Many CROs face the challenge of feeling disconnected from these responsibilities, thinking, "This isn't part of my role." But that shouldn't matter. You need to act as a steward for the entire business. This mindset echoes the presidential approach I mentioned earlier. By partnering with various teams and thinking beyond just closing deals, you can drive a much larger impact across the organization, embracing both pre- and post-sales strategies.

You’ve had such a successful career at so many great companies—Qualtrics, MX, TalkDesk, and now Gong. Can you share more about the secret to your successful career?

I learned early in my career from a mentor just how vital people and teams are to success. One mantra I live by is "people first, process second." Many leaders focus on establishing processes and operating rhythms, but I believe you can't do that effectively without a strong team in place first.

The most crucial decision any manager makes is their first hire—whether they’re stepping into a new company or a new leadership role. That initial hire sets the tone for what you can achieve. While every subsequent hire builds on that foundation, the first one is critical.

When it comes to talent, it’s essential to find individuals who are not only coachable, but also eager to learn and grow. I want team members with high energy and an insatiable curiosity. A classic approach to assessing talent is the skill and will matrix: look for those who have the will to succeed, and then teach them the skills needed for the job. This doesn't apply universally, of course; certain roles, like enterprise customer success or marketing, require a solid baseline of knowledge.

But if you can find people who are willing to learn and grow, the possibilities are endless. To progress into an executive or leadership role, you’ll struggle to get far without the right talent and a committed team by your side.

Once you have the right team, the next step is establishing an effective operating rhythm. How do you align everyone? How do you create the structure and flow that helps the team understand what success looks like? At Gong, we emphasize productivity, predictability, and growth, which translates into a clear operating rhythm that drives success and propels the company forward.

Ultimately, if you want to be a great leader and achieve significant milestones in your career, your progress will depend on the team you build and how you invest in their development. That’s the key to unlocking your potential.

Here comes one of my favorite questions. What was your biggest failure in sales and how did that experience transform you?

Here’s the good news: I've had my share of failures throughout my career and I actually encourage my teams to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. It's something I’m quite comfortable discussing.

Looking back to my early days, I was an avid reader and would often come across books like Color Code and StrengthsFinder and took those assessments to uncover my strengths and understand my “DNA.”

From those assessment reports, I realized that achievement was a core motivator for me. I think back to middle school, where receiving high grades sparked a sense of accomplishment that drove me to improve. I learned that I’m achievement-oriented and thrive on tackling exciting new challenges.

However, I also discovered that with any strength comes the potential for imbalance. When I became overly focused on achievement, I began to lose sight of the essential skills necessary for true success. In my eagerness to climb the ladder, I made several career moves—joining newer companies in pursuit of progress—only to find I might have left behind valuable opportunities.

Midway through my journey, I encountered a mentor who helped me see the importance of aligning with the right leaders and seeking guidance for my development. While I stumbled by being too quick to jump ship, I realized there’s immense value in honing my skills and focusing on my current role. When you commit to excellence where you are, unexpected opportunities often present themselves—doors begin to open that you didn’t even know existed.

We all have our strengths, but when ambition intertwines with them, it can sometimes lead us astray. It’s crucial to remain aware of your abilities and keep them in check, ensuring you don’t rush into decisions that might hinder your growth. Learning to tame those strengths and concentrate on doing exceptional work in your current position can truly unlock your potential.

In a LinkedIn-Ipsos survey that we released yesterday, we found that only roughly one quarter of sales leaders globally are highly confident that they are future ready. From our perspective, being future ready is about having the technologies, the skills, and best practices, so that your team can have the right conversations with people that matter to achieve exponential growth.

How are you approaching being future ready at Gong and helping your customers do the same?

I love this question! We could dive into this topic for hours. From my experience, there are very few companies truly prepared for the future. The rules of the game have shifted—the playbooks, processes, and frameworks we once relied on are no longer as relevant in what we’re calling the AI economy. The margin for error is shrinking, especially for revenue leaders like myself, who now have about 18 months to demonstrate real impact and ensure the company is heading in the right direction.

To help organizations prepare for the future, I’d like to outline a few key building blocks. The first is a deep and up-to-date understanding of your customers. It’s essential to know how they prefer to buy and interact with your teams. Are you in tune with their needs? Do you have a reliable way to test any changes you might consider? Ideally, you should be able to A/B test various ideas and strategies to capture real-time feedback.

The second building block is, perhaps surprisingly, a thorough understanding of your people. Talent will be the foundation for being future-ready. Does your team possess the skills and mindset necessary to navigate the AI economy? Many businesses still operate on an annual planning cycle, but we need to pivot at least quarterly—if not monthly. Are your team members prepared to adapt to these rapid changes?

Most organizations start with technology, which brings me to the third building block. Once you have a pulse on your customers and have equipped your team, it’s time to assess your tools and technology. The future sales tech stack will require fewer applications that are intelligent, providing guidance, recommendations, and predictions. It’s no longer enough to just understand your marketplace; you need to know how to pivot with your tools to offer the guidance people need.

Leaders can’t simply guess their way out of a performance dip or throw money at problems as we may have done in the past few years. Instead, we must leverage data in our daily planning, coaching, and execution. That’s why I’m excited to be at Gong, where we capture valuable data about our customers and teams, making tools more streamlined and effective.

As I watch my kids do their homework in entirely new ways, I realize that the skills we need are evolving. It’s essential to focus on the people aspect, understanding the stakeholders we lead, and preparing them for the future. Ultimately, it’s less about the technology and more about empowering our teams to thrive in this new landscape.

Here’s another interesting finding from our research. We found that sellers only spend 24% of their time, or about 10 hours a week, actually selling and nearly 20 hours a week on administrative tasks like updating a CRM and researching customers and prospects before a meeting. Of course, AI can help offload that administrative burden and carve out more time for selling.

As a sales leader, what is your advice to other sales leaders to help accelerate AI-adoption so that your team can focus more of their time on relationship building and selling?

For years as a revenue leader, I’ve had to remind my team that if they didn’t update the CRM, it didn’t happen. I thought that I needed that information to do my job effectively. But when you really dig into the data in the CRM, it often falls short of being meaningful for decision-making.

Here’s a telling example: during an average 30-minute meeting, a seller might exchange 5,000 to 6,000 words with a prospect, yet only 50 to 60 words—about 1%—make it into the CRM. And even that 1% is rarely substantial. It typically amounts to comments like, “The prospect loves me!” or “I did a great job; they’ll close by the end of the period.” This doesn’t provide the actionable insights we need.

Historically, people have spent so much time inputting data into these systems, but what if we could change that? With AI—especially what we’re doing at Gong—we’re automating the process of updating databases. By capturing interactions—whether they’re emails, phone calls, or Slack messages—we’re able to gather the other 99% of contextual data. This not only saves sellers four to six hours a week, but also enhances the quality of the information we collect.

But it’s not just about giving time back; it’s crucial to provide AI-driven recommendations for the next best actions. Imagine having follow-up notes drafted for you based on past interactions, guiding you smoothly to the next stage in the sales process. When you come in on Monday, picture receiving a personalized agenda highlighting the best activities to engage in based on your pipeline.

This approach is about enhancing productivity and providing the guidance sellers crave to boost their win rates and crush their quotas. It’s like having a built-in assistant that helps them navigate their revenue activities more effectively.

Ultimately, no one wants to spend their time updating a database; they want to engage with people and celebrate their successes. By alleviating some of the monotony and providing clear guidance, we can empower our teams to focus on what truly matters.

Ok, here’s a softball. At LinkedIn, we’re raving fans of Gong and I know that your team are raving fans of Sales Navigator. I would love to hear your perspectives on how our AI-powered solutions are—as we say—better together.

We’re big fans of Sales Navigator, especially its contact recommendations and AccountIQ features. Our reps rely on it daily. Recently, we launched an exciting integration with Sales Navigator and Gong Engage, our AI-powered sales engagement solution that helps customer-facing professionals build and develop their early-stage pipeline.

We’ve been closely collaborating with our sales development team to raise market awareness, but we noticed that our conversion rates weren’t quite where we wanted them to be. The issue was that we were operating in a single-threaded manner—typically, an SDR would generate just one contact for a new opportunity before trying to qualify and pass it along.

Now, thanks to Sales Navigator, we’ve implemented a new requirement for our SDRs: they must identify at least three contacts for each qualified opportunity. With Engage, they have direct access to Sales Navigator, enabling them to pinpoint the next best contact and build stronger relationships. We’ve already seen a remarkable improvement in our conversion rates by adopting this multi-threaded approach.

The integration means no more logging into multiple tools or switching back and forth. We can seamlessly access everything we need to identify the right contacts that drive conversion. It’s been exciting to see companies like ADP, Canva, and Okta leverage Gong and Sales Navigator to streamline their workflows and enhance account research.

This partnership exemplifies what it means to be future-ready—driving intelligence and connecting tools in ways that simplify and elevate effectiveness. With access to embedded information and the right next-best contact from Sales Navigator, teams can perform more impactful outreach and achieve better results.

We truly believe this is a "Better Together" story, empowering companies to support their teams in becoming more multi-threaded on their target accounts.

It’s time to wrap up. Looking forward, how do you think B2B sales will evolve in the next 1-2 years and what do other sales leaders need to do now to prepare?

Let me start with what I don’t think is going to happen. To illustrate my point, let’s look at the example of autonomous driving. For over 20 years, we’ve been hearing that there won’t be any drivers in the future. Fast forward two decades, and while we’ve made strides with driver assistance technologies, we still don’t have fully autonomous vehicles that can operate entirely without human intervention.

So, to imagine that AI will completely replace sales development representatives (SDRs) or customer success managers (CSMs) in the next one, two, or even five years is unrealistic. Instead, I believe we should focus on leveraging the tools and data at our disposal to enhance our effectiveness and become better resources for our customers, helping them make informed decisions.

As a seller or revenue professional, the key is to embrace new technology, capture as much data as possible, and discover how that information can make you more effective. If I told a revenue professional there’s a tool that could increase their attainment by 5, 7, or even 15 points, I have no doubt they would be eager to try it. Yet, when faced with something new, there can be hesitation to jump in.

What I encourage revenue professionals to do is to iterate, test, and explore how to leverage available information in ways that enhance their performance, support their teams, and help them achieve better results.

I envision that in one to two years, we’ll have a seamless experience as revenue professionals. We won’t need to log into eight to ten different systems just to get through our daily routines, nor will we have to report to multiple departments about our progress. Instead, everything will be automated, giving us easy access to data that enables better decision-making and fosters genuine human connections.

That’s what excites me about the future—it’s all within reach if we choose to use it responsibly and adapt it to our unique workflows. Each of us has different nuances in our daily routines, and that’s what makes this journey so exciting!

I couldn't have said it better myself! We are definitely on an exciting journey together. I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to Shane for sharing his time, wisdom, and perspectives on how he, his team, and Gong customers, are navigating the path to future ready.
