Council President's Inaugural Message</h1> <article> <p style="text-align: left;"><img style="margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 5px; width: 139px; height: 164px; float: left;" src="/images/files/images/People/Don_Tan_smaller.jpg" alt="Don Tan smaller" width="139" height="164" data-mce-width="139" data-mce-height="164" />It is a great honor and privilege to be elected to the inaugural presidency of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Council (TEC).</p> <p style="text-align: left;">TEC started as an initiative by IEEE Future Directions Committee under IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) in 2011 and then, because of its success, transitioned into a community in 2014 (under my leadership) with 6 sponsoring societies. The community grew into an organization with more than 6,000 members, hosting a slew of technical activities, publications, conferences, information curation, etc. In 2022, the TAB and the IEEE Board of Directors (BoD) approved a plan to transition the community into a full technical council (a technical council has the same responsibilities and privileges as a technical society, except it does not have membership per se). The Council begins its full operation, starting January 1, 2024. Extensive preparation work happened in 2022 and 2023.</p> </article> <section> <aside>  <p>Since its inception, the TEC has enjoyed the privilege of having an excellent leadership of three chairs: Phil Krein (2014-2017), Yaobin Chen (2025-2018) and Bruno Lequesne (2019-2022). Their dedication and success have laid a solid foundation for us to build on. In 2023 I had a great pleasure to work with all of you as the chair of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community. Among the many challenges that we faced, the most difficult one was to secure financial income streams, which involves “heavy lifting” to say the least for a “mission impossible” (as put it by some). I am glad to report that we accomplished our goals by reaching an agreement with sister societies for revenue sharing of some existing products, which we have helped to create and to grow. This doubles our revenue streams immediately. We have also reached an agreement with China Power Supply Society to financially co-sponsor ISETTE (International Symposium of Emerging Technologies on Transportation Electrification), a workshop with heavy content in electrified locomotives and electrified ships, which complements our portfolio of conference offerings nicely.  We have also agreed to resume and expand our share of the IEEE Electrification Magazine and to grow it to be more focused and more impactful to our industry and to our profession. Going forward, we will march towards our goal of doubling our revenue in 3-5 years while also doubling our “membership.” We are in the process of setting up an award committee and a fellow evaluation committee so we can recognize the huge talent pool that we have within TEC. We will enhance our presence both in conferences and publications. We will work to develop new products and services while facing the challenges of open access. We will actively pursue joint technical committees with representatives from our sponsoring societies. The new pedigree of technical committees will create new technical and business opportunities in the cross-cutting areas, which is exactly what TEC is envisioned and positioned to do. We will develop our own and/or joint chapters so our local “members” will have a professional home that can help enhance their technical careers and technological know-how. We will enhance our educational activities by actively supporting the education committee’s many planned activities.
