Compared to component-level testing, system-level test offers a much smaller degree of observability about the performance of particular system elements. The information received during the irradiation of a system might be therefore not sufficient for the identification of every system under test (SUT) malfunction. As a consequence, no action might be taken to recover the system operation while certain parts of its functionality would be lost due to the radiation-induced effects. This can lead to the incorrect execution of the system-level test and improper conclusions about radiation-induced effects. The present paper demonstrates a method allowing an efficient identification of system-level failures based on the system total current consumption monitoring. The proposed technique can be easily implemented with common instrumentation and at the same time provides valuable feedback on SUT operation. The retrieved current consumption information can be used to identify system failures that may be not observable through the communication channels that are by default included in the tested setup. Furthermore, the posttest analysis can be performed on the collected data to investigate the SUT condition along the complete timeline of its irradiation. The verification of the proposed method was performed during the qualification test of a system designed for applications at the high-energy particle accelerator facility.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Characterization of Fragmented Ultrahigh-Energy Heavy Ion Beam and Its Effects on Electronics Single-Event Effect Testing

Ultrahigh-energy (UHE) (>5 GeV/n) heavy ion beams exhibit different properties when compared to standard and high-energy ion beams. Most notably, fragmentation is a fundamental feature of the beam that may have important implications for electronics testing given the ultrahigh energies and, hence, ranges, preserved by the fragments. In this work, both the primary lead ion beam, available in the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN) north area (NA), and its fragments are characterized by means of solid-state detectors. This input is later used to improve the measurements of single-event effects (SEEs) in commercial components with this beam. Moreover, the energy deposition distribution in the solid-state detectors is compared to that obtained with Monte Carlo simulations.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

An Analysis of the Significance of the 14N(n, p) 14C Reaction for Single-Event Upsets Induced by Thermal Neutrons in SRAMs

The thermal neutron threat to the reliability of electronic devices caused by $^{10}\text{B}$ capture is a recognized issue that prompted changes in the manufacturing process of electronic devices with the aim of limiting as much as possible the presence of this isotope nearby device sensitive volumes (SVs). $^{14}\text{N}$ can also capture thermal neutrons and release low-energy protons (LEPs; through the $^{14}\text{N}$ (n, p) $^{14}\text{C}$ reaction) that have high enough linear energy transfer (LET) to cause single-event upsets (SEUs). Typically, nitrogen is used in thin barrier layers made of TaN or TiN or even as insulator in the form of Si3N4. Numerical simulations on SVs calibrated on proton and ion experimental data and with an accurate description of the metallization layer on top of the sensitive region show that the presence of nitrogen in these thin barrier layers can be enough to justify the experimentally observed thermal neutron SEU cross Section for a static random access memory (SRAM) sensitive to LEPs. Nevertheless, the expected SEU cross Section from thermal neutrons is usually a few orders of magnitude lower than that of high-energy particles, therefore, not representing an important threat in atmospheric applications. At the same time, for high-energy accelerators, the contribution to the total soft error rate (SER) could become substantial, though easy to handle by margins.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Silicon solid-state detectors for monitoring high-energy accelerator mixed field radiation environments

This paper investigates an application of the 1000µm-thick silicon solid-state detector for monitoring of a mixed-field radiation environment, in particular an accelerator environment. The calibrations of the detector against both an alpha source and high-energy protons are presented. The protons measurements are benchmarked against the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations. As the detector might be deployed in a future RadMON version, a simulated accelerator use case is presented, highlighting the enhanced sensitivity (by 3-4 orders of magnitude) with respect to SRAM-based solutions, in case of High Energy Hadron (HEH) fluence monitoring.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

SEE Testing on commercial power MOSFETs

This work compiles the outcome of several irradiation test campaigns, carried out with the aim of studying the susceptibility to hard Single Event Effects (SEE) of various commercial power MOSFET references. High-Energy Neutron and Mixed Fields

The energy deposition spectra in a silicon detector have been measured at chip irradiation (ChipIr) and Cern High energy AcceleRator Mixed field (CHARM) facilities. The measurement was possible thanks to a fast electronic chain that can cope with high instantaneous fluxes. A computational study of the energy deposition in a silicon detector allows for the comparison of high-energy spallation facilities dedicated to the irradiation of microelectronics and for the validation of radiation transport models. The measured time structure of the facilities pulses is also presented with an example on how to use this result to correct in the case of large dead times (DTs).

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Single Event Effect Testing With Ultrahigh Energy Heavy Ion Beams

Single event effect (SEE) testing with ultrahigh energy (UHE) heavy ions, such as the beams provided at CERN, presents advantages related to their long ranges with a constant linear energy transfer value. In the present work, the possibility to test components in parallel is being examined, and results from the CERN 2018 UHE Pb test campaigns are studied. However, the intercepting material in the beam line contributes to the modification of the beam structure by generation of fragments produced via nuclear interactions. This is especially relevant for UHE heavy ion beams, representative of energies in space, which are not fully investigated through conventional ground-level testing. This article is dedicated to the study of the longitudinal energy deposition mechanisms in silicon by the aforementioned heavy ion beams and their fragments. The presented studies have been carried out using Monte Carlo simulations triggered by experimentally observed phenomena.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Thermal Neutron-Induced SEUs in the LHC Accelerator Environment

In addition to high-energy hadrons, which include neutrons, protons, and pions above 20 MeV, thermal neutrons (ThNs) are a major concern in terms of soft error rate (SER) for electronics operating in the large hadron collider (LHC) accelerator at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Most of the electronic devices still contain Boron-10 inside their structure, which makes them sensitive to ThNs. The LHC radiation environment in different tunnel and shielded areas is analyzed through measurements and FLUKA simulations, showing that the ThN fluence can be considerably higher than the high-energy one, up to a factor of 50. State-of-the-art commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components such as SRAM, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA), and Flash memories of different technologies are studied to derive the expected single-event upset (SEU) rate due to ThNs, relative to the high-energy hadron contribution. We find that for the studied parts and most of the accelerator applications, ThNs are the dominating source of upsets with respect to the high energy particles yielding even to neglect the latter in some cases. Indeed, they can induce, in electronics, up to more than 90% of the total upsets. The estimation is performed also for ground-level and avionic applications, and although in general, ThNs are not the main source of SER, in Flash memories they can play the same role as high energy neutrons. Related radiation hardness assurance (RHA) considerations for the qualification of components and systems against ThNs are presented.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Direct Ionization Impact on Accelerator Mixed-Field Soft-Error Rate

We investigate, through measurements and simulations, the possible direct ionization impact on the accelerator soft-error rate (SER), not considered in standard qualification approaches.
