It is often associated with abundance, prosperity, and the best portions of offerings to God.

Literal Use and Dietary Laws

In the Old Testament, fat is frequently mentioned in the context of dietary laws and sacrificial offerings. Leviticus 3:16 states, "All the fat belongs to the LORD." This directive underscores the importance of offering the best portions to God, as fat was considered the richest and most desirable part of the animal. The Israelites were instructed to burn the fat of sacrificial animals on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord (Leviticus 3:5).

The consumption of fat from certain animals was prohibited. Leviticus 7:23-25 commands, "You must not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep, or goats. The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it." This prohibition highlights the sanctity of the fat reserved for God and the importance of obedience to His commandments.

Symbolic Use

Fat is also used symbolically in the Bible to represent prosperity and blessing. In Genesis 45:18, Pharaoh tells Joseph's brothers, "I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land." Here, "fat" symbolizes the abundance and richness of the land's produce, indicating a time of plenty and divine favor.

In the Psalms, fat is used metaphorically to describe spiritual satisfaction and abundance. Psalm 63:5 declares, "My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with joyful lips my mouth will praise You." The imagery of being satisfied with the "richest of foods" conveys a deep sense of fulfillment and contentment found in God's presence.

Judgment and Reproof

Conversely, fat can also symbolize excess and complacency, leading to spiritual neglect. In Deuteronomy 32:15, the Israelites are reproved for their unfaithfulness: "But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you grew fat, thick, and sleek—then he forsook God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation." Here, "fat" signifies a state of self-indulgence and pride that results in turning away from God.

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, fat serves as a multifaceted symbol, representing both the richness of God's blessings and the potential for spiritual complacency. It underscores the importance of offering the best to God, recognizing His provision, and maintaining a humble and obedient heart.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Fat
The Hebrews distinguished between the suet or pure fat of an animal and the fat which was intermixed with the lean. (Leviticus 3:3,9,17; 7:3,23) The ground of the prohibition was that the fat was the richest part of the animal, and therefore belonged to him.
