<span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>So the people<MH5971a> came<MH935> to Bethel<MH1008> and sat<MH3427> there<MH8033> before<MH6440> God<MH430> until<MH5704> evening<MH6153>, and raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>profusely<MH1419, 1065>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, &#8220;Why<MH4100>, LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, has this<MH2088> happened<MH1961> in Israel<MH3478>, that one<MH259> tribe<MH7626> is<MH6485> missing<MH6485> today<MH3117> from Israel<MH3478>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> the next<MH4283> day<MH4283> that the people<MH5971a> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> and built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> there<MH8033>, and offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> and peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559>, &#8220;Who<MH4310> is there among<MH4480> all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> who<MH834> did not go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the LORD<MH3068> in the assembly<MH6951>?&#8221; For <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>they had taken<MH1961> a solemn<MH1419> oath<MH7621> concerning <i>anyone</i> who<MH834> did not go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the LORD<MH3068> at Mizpah<MH4709>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;He shall certainly<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> were<MH5162> sorry<MH5162> for their brother<MH251> Benjamin<MH1144>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;Today<MH3117> one<MH259> tribe<MH7626> is cut<MH1438> off<MH1438> from Israel<MH3478>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>What<MH4100> are we to do<MH6213a> for wives<MH802> for those<MH1992a> who are left<MH3498>, since we have sworn<MH7650> by the LORD<MH3068> not to give<MH5414> them any<MH4480> of our daughters<MH1323> as wives<MH802>?&#8221; <p class="hdg">Provision for Their Survival</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4310> one<MH259> is there of the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> that did not go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the LORD<MH3068> at Mizpah<MH4709>?&#8221; And behold<MH2009>, no<MH3808> one<MH376> had come<MH935> to the camp<MH4264> from Jabesh-gilead<MH3003, 1568> to the assembly<MH6951>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For when the people<MH5971a> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>counted<MH6485>, behold<MH2009>, not one<MH376> of the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jabesh-gilead<MH3003, 1568> was there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the congregation<MH5712> sent<MH7971> twelve<MH8147, 6240> thousand<MH505> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>of the valiant<MH1121, 2428> warriors<MH376> there<MH8033>, and commanded<MH6680> them, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> and strike<MH5221> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jabesh-gilead<MH3003, 1568> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>, along with the women<MH802> and the children<MH2945>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And this<MH2088> is the thing<MH1697> that you shall do<MH6213a>: you shall utterly<MH2763a> destroy<MH2763a> every<MH3605> male<MH2145>, and every<MH3605> woman<MH802> who has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>slept<MH3045, 4904> with a male<MH2145>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And they found<MH4672> among<MH4480> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jabesh-gilead<MH3003, 1568> four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> young<MH5291> virgins<MH1330> who<MH834> had not known<MH3045> a man<MH376> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>sleeping<MH4904> with him; and they brought<MH935> them to the camp<MH4264> at Shiloh<MH7887>, which<MH834> is in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then the whole<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and spoke<MH1696> to the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> who<MH834> were at the rock<MH5553> of Rimmon<MH7417c>, and proclaimed<MH7121> peace<MH7965> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And <i>the tribe of</i> Benjamin<MH1144> returned<MH7725> at that time<MH6256>, and they gave<MH5414> them the women<MH802> whom<MH834> they had allowed<MH2421a> to<MH2421a> live<MH2421a> from the women<MH802> of Jabesh-gilead<MH3003, 1568>; but they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>were not enough<MH3651> for them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the people<MH5971a> were<MH5162> sorry<MH5162> for Benjamin<MH1144>, because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> had created<MH6213a> a gap<MH6556> in the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then the elders<MH2205> of the congregation<MH5712> said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4310> are we to do<MH6213a> for wives<MH802> for those who are left<MH3498>, since<MH3588> the women<MH802> have been eliminated<MH8045> from Benjamin<MH1144>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, &#8220;<i>There must be</i> an inheritance<MH3425> for the survivors<MH6413> of Benjamin<MH1144>, so that a tribe<MH7626> will not be wiped<MH4229a> out<MH4229a> from Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But we cannot<MH3201, 3808> give<MH5414> them wives<MH802> from our daughters<MH1323>.&#8221; For the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> had sworn<MH7650>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Cursed<MH779> is he who gives<MH5414> a wife<MH802> to Benjamin<MH1144>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So they said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, there is a feast<MH2282> of the LORD<MH3068> from year<MH3117> to year<MH3117> in Shiloh<MH7887>, which<MH834> is on the north<MH6828> side<MH6828> of Bethel<MH1008>, on the east<MH4217, 8121> side<MH4217, 8121> of the road<MH4546> that goes<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Bethel<MH1008> to Shechem<MH7927>, and on the south<MH5045> side<MH5045> of Lebonah<MH3829>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And they commanded<MH6680> the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> and lie<MH693> in<MH693> wait<MH693> in the vineyards<MH3754>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and watch<MH7200>; and behold<MH2009>, if<MH518> the daughters<MH1323> of Shiloh<MH7887> come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>take<MH2342a> part<MH2342a> in the dances<MH4246>, then you shall come<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the vineyards<MH3754>, and each<MH376> of you shall seize<MH2414> his wife<MH802> from the daughters<MH1323> of Shiloh<MH7887>, and go<MH1980> to the land<MH776> of Benjamin<MH1144>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And when<MH3588> their fathers<MH1> or<MH176> their brothers<MH251> come<MH935> to complain<MH7378> to us, we shall say<MH559> to them, &#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Give<MH2603a> them to us voluntarily<MH2603a>, because<MH3588> we did not take<MH3947> for each<MH376> man<MH376> <i>of Benjamin</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>a wife<MH802> in battle<MH4421>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>nor<MH3588, 3808> did you give<MH5414> <i>them</i> to them, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>otherwise you would now<MH6256> be guilty<MH816>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/21-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>, and took<MH5375> wives<MH802> according to their number<MH4557> from those who danced<MH2342a>, whom<MH834> they seized<MH1497>.
