at the Civil Rights Movement as simply a moment in history, the University of Tennessee at Martin prides itself on being one of only two universities in the nation that hold an annual conference.</p> <p>“Four or five years back, one of our speakers said to me ‘who else is doing this?’ and I started to look around,” says Dr. David Barber, co-coordinator of the UT Martin Civil Rights Conference. </p> <p>“At the time, I couldn’t find anyone else doing it. So, I started boasting ‘we are the only ones doing it.’ It is something to be proud of, but it’s a sad commentary on public universities.” </p> <p>The university is thankful to offer students the opportunity to learn from those who did not just learn about the Civil Rights Movement, but lived it.</p> <p>“I am very proud of our continuing support of programming to enhance diversity initiatives such as the annual Civil Rights Conference that brings authentic perspective in ways that only first-hand knowledge reflects. Our faculty, staff and students are very fortunate to have this annual opportunity to learn from those who were a part of our past,” said UT Martin Chancellor Tom Rakes.</p> <div class="spike">RELATED <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615174643/http://www.usatodayeducate.com/staging/index.php/pulse/university-of-mississippi-latest-frat-suspended-for-racist-act" target="_blank" target="_blank">University of Mississippi latest to suspend fraternity for racist act</a></div> <p>UT Martin’s 14<sup>th</sup> annual Civil Rights Conference concluded Thursday, Feb. 27 with a keynote presentation by David Dennis, who was one of the Freedom Riders during the 1960s.</p> <p>“Dave Dennis was an obvious choice. [His] message is relevant to college students because he demonstrates that the struggle for civil rights isn’t over … meeting people like Dennis shows that they are humans like you and me, and if they can create change in the face of incredible adversity, so can I,” said Dr. Renee LaFleur, co-coordinator of the UT Martin Civil Rights Conference.</p> <p>Dennis not only participated in the First Freedom Ride from Montgomery, Ala. to Jackson, Miss., he co-organized countless sit-ins, and was co-directors of both the Council of Federated Organization and Freedom Summer of 1964. Dennis has worked tirelessly to effect social justice and change in America throughout his life. Dennis says his own children and grandchildren keep him going with the activism.</p> <p>“The issue and problem still exists; so I will do whatever I can to make it a better world for [my children and grandchildren] and for all kids” Dennis said.</p> <p>He continues his activism work today with the Algebra Project, which “uses mathematics … to ensure quality public school education for every child in America,” according to the program’s website.</p> <div class="spike">RELATED <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615174643/http://www.usatodayeducate.com/staging/index.php/opinion/opinion-comparing-the-occupy-and-civil-rights-movements" target="_blank" target="_blank">Opinion: Comparing the Occupy and civil rights movements</a></div> <p>Throughout the week, UT Martin had several guest speakers, including Florence Roach, who played a role in the Academy Award nominate film, <em>The Help</em>; Yohuru Williams, who is the director of black studies at Fairfield University; Mark Anthony Neal, who is a professor of black popular culture at Duke University and Howard Romaine who worked on projects involving racial equality, poverty, labor and the Vietnam War in the ‘60s and ‘70s.</p> <p>Williams’ presentation was directed at the students in the audience. He told the audience that no matter their age, they could make a change. Many of the people involved in the 1960s were young and many were in college, just like the students in the audience.</p> <p>“[Williams] told the history by talking about the responsibility that all of us have today to continue the work of the Civil Rights Movement. He showed that the young people who made up the Movement in the ‘50s, ‘60s and into the ‘70s are no different than the young people who were sitting in the auditorium. The qualities in an individual, which allowed those individuals to make history in the 60s, are in all of us, and I think we all need to realize that,” Barber said.</p> <p>Williams spoke to the audience and told them the lessons taught on the civil rights movement are most often the incomplete version of what actually happened.</p> <p>“Williams demonstrated that we have a sanitized version of the Civil Rights history. The version we have is Rosa Parks sat down, and Martin Luther King stood up. All the rest is history. The reality of the movement is that tens of thousands of people participated and made the forward motion to change to the social reality. People just like the students in the auditorium,” Barber said.</p> <p>The Civil Rights Conference that UT Martin sponsors is still relevant in the eyes of the university.</p> <p>“The importance of the continuation of the Civil Rights Conference is to put the agenda of the Civil Rights Movement forward in this country. It’s to say that what people were fighting for then is still important to this day. I think if Martin Luther King were to return to this country today, I think he would be very disappointed with where things are.
