The Jews were distinguished from their neighbours in their dress, as well as in their diet, and thus taught not to be conformed to the way of the heathen in other things. They proclaimed themselves Jews wherever they were, as not ashamed of God and his law. The fringes were not appointed for trimming and adorning their clothes, but to stir up their minds by way of remembrance, 2Pe 3:1. If they were tempted to sin, the fringe would warn them not to break God's commandments. We should use every means of refreshing our memories with the truths and precepts of God's word, to strengthen and quicken our obedience, and arm our minds against temptation. Be holy unto your God; cleansed from sin, and sincerely devoted to his service; and that great reason for all the commandments is again and again repeated, I am the Lord your God.<a name="bar" id="bar"></a><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/barnes/numbers/15.htm">Barnes' Notes on the Bible</a></div>Death had indeed been assigned as the penalty <a href="/exodus/31-14.htm">Exodus 31:14</a>; <a href="/exodus/35-2.htm">Exodus 35:2</a>; but it had not been determined how that death was to be inflicted. <a name="jfb" id="jfb"></a><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/jfb/numbers/15.htm">Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary</a></div>35, 36. The command to wear Tassels on the Edge of the Upper Garment appears to have been occasioned by the incident just described. The Israelites were to wear &#1510;&#1497;&#1510;&#1514;, tassels, on the wings of their upper garments, or, according to <a href="http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/22-12.htm">Deuteronomy 22:12</a>, at the four corners of the upper garment. &#1499;&#1468;&#1505;&#1493;&#1468;&#1514;, the covering in which a man wraps himself, synonymous with &#1489;&#1468;&#1490;&#1491;, was the upper garment, consisting of a four-cornered cloth or piece of stuff, which was thrown over the body-coat (see my Bibl. Archol. ii. pp. 36, 37), and is not to be referred, as Schultz supposes, to the bed-coverings also, although this garment was actually used as a counterpane by the poor (see <a href="http://biblehub.com/exodus/22-25.htm">Exodus 22:25-26</a>). "And upon the tassel of the wing they shall put a string of hyacinth-blue," namely, to fasten the tassel to the edge of the garment. &#1510;&#1497;&#1510;&#1514; (fem., from &#1510;&#1497;&#1509;, the glittering, the bloom or flower) signifies something flowery or bloom-like, and is used in <a href="/ezekiel/8-3.htm">Ezekiel 8:3</a> for a lock of hair; here it is applied to a tassel, as being made of twisted threads: lxx &#x3ba;&#x3c1;&#x3b1;&#769;&#x3c3;&#x3c0;&#x3b5;&#x3b4;&#x3b1;; <a href="http://biblehub.com/matthew/23-5.htm">Matthew 23:5</a>, "borders." The size of these tassels is not prescribed. The Pharisees liked to make them large, to exhibit openly their punctilious fulfilment of the law. For the Rabbinical directions how to make them, see Carpzov. apparat. pp. 197ff.; and Bodenschatz, kirchliche Verfassung der heutigen Juden, iv. pp. 11ff. <div class="vheading2">Links</div><a href="/interlinear/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Interlinear</a><br /><a href="/texts/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Parallel Texts</a><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/niv/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="http://bibleapps.com/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Bible Apps</a><br /><a href="/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Parallel</a><br /><a href="http://bibliaparalela.com/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="http://holybible.com.cn/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="http://saintebible.com/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 French Bible</a><br /><a href="http://bibeltext.com/numbers/15-37.htm">Numbers 15:37 German Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/">Bible Hub</a><br /></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="mdd"><div align="center"><div class="bot2"><table align="center" width="100%"><tr><td align="center"><div align="center"> <script id="3d27ed63fc4348d5b062c4527ae09445"> (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=51ce25d5-1a8c-424a-8695-4bd48c750f35&cid=3a9f82d0-4344-4f8d-ac0c-e1a0eb43a405'; </script> <script id="b817b7107f1d4a7997da1b3c33457e03"> (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=cb0edd8b-b416-47eb-8c6d-3cc96561f7e8&cid=3a9f82d0-4344-4f8d-ac0c-e1a0eb43a405'; </script><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-ATF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-2'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-300x250-ATF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-0' style='max-width: 300px;'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-BTF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-3'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-300x250-BTF --> <div id='div-gpt-ad-1529103594582-1' style='max-width: 300px;'> </div><br /><br /> <!-- /1078254/BH-728x90-BTF2 --> <div align="center" id='div-gpt-ad-1531425649696-0'> </div><br /><br /> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:200px;height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3753401421161123" data-ad-slot="3592799687"></ins> <script> (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); </script><br /><br /> </div> <div id="left"><a href="../numbers/15-36.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Numbers 15:36"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Numbers 15:36" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="../numbers/15-38.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Numbers 15:38"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Numbers 15:38" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div> <div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
