Several top police organizations Thursday endorsed the Republican’s bid for governor.</p><p>“Law enforcement has always meant a lot to me,” Abbott said after a news conference announcing the endorsements in Dallas.</p><p>“The safety of families comes first. The first and foremost function of government is to keep people safe. I’m proud that these large law enforcement organizations support me.”</p><p>Abbott picked up support from the Dallas Police Association, the Houston Police Officer’s Union and the Department of Public Safety Officers Association.</p><p>They endorsed him over former Republican Party Chairman Tom Pauken and Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth. Abbott is facing Pauken in the March GOP primary. Davis is unopposed for the Democratic nomination for governor.</p><p>“He’s been very good to law enforcement. He stuck to his word. He’s fought crime very hard,” said Fred Frazier, who heads the DPA’s political action committee. “We’re going to stick with our guy.”</p><p>Josh Thurlkill, president of the Texas Municipal Police Association, said Abbott should be commended for putting child predators in jail.</p><p>“He’s always been a supporter of law enforcement.
