Catalog entry: The historian Mason Locke Weems, commonly known by his clerical title, Parson Weems, pulls back a curtain to point at 6-year-old George Washington. Bearing an adult head and holding an axe, George gazes blankly up at his father, Augustine, who questions his son while holding a partially cut cherry tree. All of this takes place in front of a 20th-century brick building, which Wood modeled after his own home in Iowa. The scene illustrates the fable of Washington and the cherry tree, which Weems invented in 1806 for the first president's biography. Wood playfully suggests the artifice of the tale here, presenting the story in the manner of a costumed stage play rather than a real event. Amid the action, two Black figures pick cherries in the background, a reference to Washington' slaveholding past and a reminder of of what often gets left out in historical mythmaking." width="200" height="200" /> </a> </div> <div class="card-body ilf-content"> <a class="font-weight-semi-bold d-block mb-5 font-16 ilf-title" href="/story/did-george-washington-really-say-i-cant-tell-a-lie" >Did George Washington Really Say, “I Can’t Tell a Lie”? </a> </div> </div> <div class="imagelink-with-image-on-the-side card card-horizontal tlr-img-with-side-link ml-15 link-gray-900 mb-10" > <div class="position-relative card-media" style="flex: 0;"> <a class="ilf-image position-relative" href="/story/6-important-mughal-emperors"> <img loading="lazy" src="https://cdn.britannica.com/09/172209-131-02E18D09/Shah-Jahan-watercolour-gold-ink-paper-1690.jpg?w=200&h=200&c=crop" alt="Shah Jahan. The move did not settle differences; it merely <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="sublimated" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sublimated" data-type="MW">sublimated</a> them. The two parties had closed ranks only to defend a labour system that had become a symbol of the Southern way of life. In January 1861 Mississippi seceded from the union, and within a year the state was in the clutch of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/American-Civil-War" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">American Civil War</a> (1861–65). The people suffered; the land was devastated; and, by the end of the war, the state was in economic ruin.</p><!--[MOD7]--><span class="marker MOD7 mod-inline"></span></section> <section data-level="2" id="ref279887"><h2 class="h2">The aftermath of the Civil War</h2> <!--[PREMOD8]--><span class="marker PREMOD8 mod-inline"></span><div class="assemblies multiple medialist slider js-slider position-relative d-inline-flex align-items-center mw-100" data-type="other"><div class="slider-container js-slider-container overflow-hidden d-flex"><div class="rw-track d-flex align-items-center"><div class="position-relative rw-slide col-100 px-20 "><figure class="md-assembly m-0 mb-md-0 card card-borderless print-false" data-assembly-id="96250" data-asm-type="image"><div class="md-assembly-wrapper card-media" data-type="image"><a href="https://cdn.britannica.com/72/70872-050-349752EA/New-Albany-Miss-1900.jpg" class="gtm-assembly-link position-relative d-flex align-items-center justify-content-center media-overlay-link card-media" data-href="/media/1/385567/96250"><picture><source media="(min-width: 680px)" srcset="https://cdn.britannica.com/72/70872-050-349752EA/New-Albany-Miss-1900.jpg?w=300"><img src="https://cdn.britannica.com/72/70872-050-349752EA/New-Albany-Miss-1900.jpg?w=300" alt="New Albany, Miss." data-width="1600" data-height="936" loading="eager"></picture><div class="position-absolute top-10 left-10 assembly-slide-tag rounded-lg">1 of 3</div><button class="magnifying-glass btn btn-circle position-absolute shadow btn-white top-10 right-10" aria-label="Zoom in"><em class="material-icons link-blue" data-icon="zoom_in"></em></button></a></div><figcaption class="card-body"><div class="md-assembly-caption text-muted font-14 font-serif line-clamp"><span><a class="gtm-assembly-link md-assembly-title font-weight-bold d-inline font-sans-serif mr-5 media-overlay-link" href="https://cdn.britannica.com/72/70872-050-349752EA/New-Albany-Miss-1900.jpg" data-href="/media/1/385567/96250">New Albany, Miss.</a><span>New Albany, Miss., <em>c.</em> 1900.</span><button class="js-more-btn d-none btn btn-unstyled font-12 bg-white js-content" aria-label="Toggle more/less fact data"><span class="link-blue">(more)</span></button></span></div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="position-relative rw-slide col-100 px-20 "><figure class="md-assembly m-0 mb-md-0 card card-borderless print-false" data-assembly-id="96365" data-asm-type="image"><div class="md-assembly-wrapper card-media" data-type="image"><a href="https://cdn.britannica.com/97/71197-050-8172DA9C/Cotton-mill-Tupelo-Miss-Lewis-Hine-photograph-1911.jpg" class="gtm-assembly-link position-relative d-flex align-items-center justify-content-center media-overlay-link card-media" data-href="/media/1/385567/96365"><picture><source media="(min-width: 680px)" srcset="https://cdn.britannica.com/97/71197-050-8172DA9C/Cotton-mill-Tupelo-Miss-Lewis-Hine-photograph-1911.jpg?w=300"><img src="https://cdn.britannica.com/97/71197-050-8172DA9C/Cotton-mill-Tupelo-Miss-Lewis-Hine-photograph-1911.jpg?w=300" alt="Tupelo, Miss., U.S.: cotton mill" data-width="1600" data-height="918" loading="eager"></picture><div class="position-absolute top-10 left-10 assembly-slide-tag rounded-lg">2 of 3</div><button class="magnifying-glass btn btn-circle position-absolute shadow btn-white top-10 right-10" aria-label="Zoom in"><em class="material-icons link-blue" data-icon="zoom_in"></em></button></a></div><figcaption class="card-body"><div class="md-assembly-caption text-muted font-14 font-serif line-clamp"><span><a class="gtm-assembly-link md-assembly-title font-weight-bold d-inline font-sans-serif mr-5 media-overlay-link" href="https://cdn.britannica.com/97/71197-050-8172DA9C/Cotton-mill-Tupelo-Miss-Lewis-Hine-photograph-1911.jpg" data-href="/media/1/385567/96365">Tupelo, Miss., U.S.: cotton mill</a><span>Cotton mill in Tupelo, Miss., U.S., 1911;
