The act of flying suggests swiftness and the ability to act beyond human limitations, highlighting God's omnipresence and omnipotence. This can be connected to other scriptures where God is described as riding on the clouds or the heavens, such as <a href="/psalms/18-10.htm">Psalm 18:10</a> and <a href="/isaiah/19.htm">Isaiah 19:1</a>, reinforcing His role as the divine warrior and protector.<p><b>He soared on the wings of the wind.</b><br>The phrase "soared on the wings of the wind" further illustrates God's supreme authority over creation. Wind in the Bible often symbolizes the Spirit of God, as seen in <a href="/genesis/1-2.htm">Genesis 1:2</a> and <a href="/john/3-8.htm">John 3:8</a>. This metaphor suggests that God moves with the power and freedom of the wind, unhindered by earthly constraints. It also conveys the idea of God's swift intervention in the affairs of humanity, as He comes to the aid of His people. The imagery of soaring on the wind can be seen as a type of Christ, who, in the New Testament, is described as having authority over the natural elements, such as calming the storm in <a href="/mark/4-39.htm">Mark 4:39</a>. This connection underscores the continuity of God's power and presence from the Old Testament to the New Testament, revealing His unchanging nature and His active involvement in the world.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/d/david.htm">David</a></b><br>The author of this song of praise, David is reflecting on God's deliverance and protection throughout his life. In this psalm the cherub is his chariot, on which he rides forth to judgment. <span class="cmt_word">He was seen.</span> There can be little doubt that the right reading is preserved in <a href="/psalms/18-10.htm">Psalm 18:10</a>, where we find a verb signifying the swooping down of a bird of prey upon its quarry (<a href="/deuteronomy/28-49.htm">Deuteronomy 28:49</a>; <a href="/jeremiah/48-40.htm">Jeremiah 48:40</a>). The gathering of waters would describe the massing of the rain clouds. The difference here also consists only in one letter. <span class="cmt_word">Out of the brightness,</span> which closely surrounds the Deity in the midst of the black mass of the tempest, the lightning flashes forth. This brightness is the Shechinah (see above), to which St. Paul also refers where he says that God's dwelling is in "the unapproachable light" (<a href="/1_timothy/6-16.htm">1 Timothy 6:16</a>). <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/2_samuel/22-11.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">He mounted</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב</span> <span class="translit">(way·yir·kaḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7392.htm">Strong's 7392: </a> </span><span class="str2">To ride, to place upon, to despatch</span><br /><br /><span class="word">a cherub</span><br /><span class="heb">כְּר֖וּב</span> <span class="translit">(kə·rūḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3742.htm">Strong's 3742: </a> </span><span class="str2">Probably an order of angelic beings</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and flew;</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיָּעֹ֑ף</span> <span class="translit">(way·yā·‘ōp̄)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5774.htm">Strong's 5774: </a> </span><span class="str2">To fly, to faint</span><br /><br /><span class="word">He soared</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיֵּרָ֖א</span> <span class="translit">(way·yê·rā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7200.htm">Strong's 7200: </a> </span><span class="str2">To see</span><br /><br /><span class="word">on</span><br /><span class="heb">עַל־</span> <span class="translit">(‘al-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5921.htm">Strong's 5921: </a> </span><span class="str2">Above, over, upon, against</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the wings</span><br /><span class="heb">כַּנְפֵי־</span> <span class="translit">(kan·p̄ê-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine plural construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3671.htm">Strong's 3671: </a> </span><span class="str2">An edge, extremity, a wing, a flap, a quarter, a pinnacle</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the wind.</span><br /><span class="heb">רֽוּחַ׃</span> <span class="translit">(rū·aḥ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7307.htm">Strong's 7307: </a> </span><span class="str2">Wind, breath, exhalation, life, anger, unsubstantiality, a region of the sky, spirit</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/2_samuel/22-11.htm">2 Samuel 22:11 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/2_samuel/22-11.htm">OT History: 2 Samuel 22:11 He rode on a cherub and flew (2Sa iiSam 2 Sam ii sam) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/2_samuel/22-10.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="2 Samuel 22:10"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="2 Samuel 22:10" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/2_samuel/22-12.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="2 Samuel 22:12"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="2 Samuel 22:12" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
