Modern Era</a>,” which emerged from a workshop held at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel at the end of September 2021. The underlying idea is to take the how-to book seriously as a genre, regardless of which topics are being dealt with, be it counteracting a pandemic, locating and extracting natural resources or preparing a tasty meal. ‘How-to book’ serves as a guiding term for a series of other genre terms, such as advice book, instruction manual or recipe booklet, which have so far remained underexplored as an overarching ensemble of practical knowledge in their cultural studies research and library cataloguing.
