<A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>he answered, when you are in the city, you will meet a man with a pitcher of water; follow him to the house, where he goes in: <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and say to the man of the house, our master sent to ask for a room, where he may eat the passover with his disciples. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and he will show you a large upper room ready fitted: there prepare the supper. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>so they went, and having found every thing as Jesus had said, they made ready the passover.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">The Last Supper<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#20">Matthew 26:20&#8211;30</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#17">Mark 14:17&#8211;26</a>; <a href ="../1_corinthians/11.htm#17">1 Corinthians 11:17&#8211;34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The hour of eating being come, he, and the twelve apostles sat down to table. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and he said to them, I have ardently desired to eat this passover with you, before I suffer. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>for I declare unto you, I shall not celebrate this passover with you any more, to the time, when it shall have its accomplishment in the kingdom of the messiah. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>having then taken the cup, and given thanks, he said, take this, and distribute it to one another. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>for I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine to the time when the kingdom of God shall come. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>then he took bread, and having given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to them, saying, this represents my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and after supper he likewise gave the cup, saying, this cup is the new testament sealed by my blood, which is shed for you. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>yet there's the hand that is to seize me, now upon the table. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>the son of man indeed must die, as it was decreed: but wo to that man by whom he is betrayed. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>upon this they began to enquire of one another, which of them it was that should do such an action.<p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Who Is the Greatest?<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now there had been a dispute among the disciples, which of them should be accounted the greatest. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Jesus therefore told them, the kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they, who are invested with their authority, take the title of benefactors. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>but you must not be such: the greatest of you must be as the junior, and he that governs as he that serves. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>for who is greatest, he that sits at table, or he that waits? is it not the person at table? yet I am among you as one that serves.<p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>but since you did not abandon me in my trials, <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>I commit the kingdom to you, as my father committed it to me; <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>that you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom, and seated on thrones may judge the twelve tribes of Israel.<p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter&#8217;s Denial<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#31">Matthew 26:31&#8211;35</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#27">Mark 14:27&#8211;31</a>; <a href ="../john/13.htm#36">John 13:36&#8211;38</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then said Jesus, Simon, Simon, satan has demanded to shake you, and my disciples, like wheat in a sieve. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>but as for thee, I have pray'd that you faith may not fail, do you in return establish thy brethren. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Peter answer'd, Lord, I am ready to accompany you both to prison, and to death. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>but Jesus said, before the cock proclaims the day, you will thrice deny that ever you knew me.<p> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>When I sent you, added Jesus, without either purse, or bag, or shoes, was you in any want? not at all, answer'd they. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>but now, said he, let him that hath a purse, and a bag, take them both; and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment to buy one. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>for take notice, that scripture, "and he was number'd among the transgressors," is yet to be accomplished in my person: and all that relates to me is going to be consummated. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Lord, said they, you see, we have two swords, he reply'd, that's enough.<p> <A name="40"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#36">Matthew 26:36&#8211;46</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#32">Mark 14:32&#8211;42</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Then he went out, and retired as usual to the mountain of olives, where his disciples followed him. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>at his arrival there, he said to them, pray that you may withstand the trial. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>At length he withdrew from them about a stone's cast, where falling upon his knees, <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>he pray'd in these words, father, "O that you would divert this cup from me! nevertheless not my will, but thine be done." <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>then an angel from heaven appear'd to him, and comforted him. <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>and being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was like grumes of blood falling to the ground. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>then rising from prayer, he came to his disciples, and finding them asleep, oppress'd with grief, why do you sleep? <A name="47"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>said he, rise, and pray that you may withstand the trial.<p> <A name="48"></a><p class="hdg">The Betrayal of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#47">Matthew 26:47&#8211;56</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#43">Mark 14:43&#8211;52</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm">John 18:1&#8211;14</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Before he had done speaking, the company appears, Judas one of the twelve marching in front, who advanc'd to Jesus to give him a kiss. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>but Jesus said to him, Judas is it thus you betray the son of man, with a kiss? <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>they who were about him seeing what would happen, said to him, shall we smite with the sword? <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>and one of them struck a servant of the high priest, and slash'd off his right ear. <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>but Jesus oppos'd, and said, forbear, stop there, and having touch'd his ear, he healed him. <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>then said Jesus to the chief priests, the officers of the temple, and the rulers, who were come to take him, are you come here with swords and staves as in pursuit of a robber?
