<span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and they took<MH7617> captive<MH7617> the women<MH802> <i>and all</i> who<MH834> were in it, from<MH4480> the small<MH6996b> to the great<MH1419>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>without<MH3808> killing<MH4191> anyone<MH376>, and drove<MH5090a> <i>them</i> off<MH5090a> and went<MH1980> their way<MH1870>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>When David<MH1732> and his men<MH376> came<MH935> to the city<MH5892b>, behold<MH2009>, it was burned<MH8313> with fire<MH784>, and their wives<MH802>, their sons<MH1121>, and their daughters<MH1323> had been taken<MH7617> captive<MH7617>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> and the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with him raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058> until<MH5704, 834> there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> strength<MH3581b> in them to weep<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now David&#8217;s<MH1732> two<MH8147> wives<MH802> had been taken<MH7617> captive<MH7617>, Ahinoam<MH293> the Jezreelitess<MH3159> and Abigail<MH26> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>widow<MH802> of Nabal<MH5037> the Carmelite<MH3761>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Also, David<MH1732> was<MH6887a> in<MH6887a> great<MH3966> distress<MH6887a> because<MH3588> the people<MH5971a> spoke<MH559> of stoning<MH5619> him, for all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> were<MH4843> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>embittered<MH4843>, each<MH376> one<MH376> because<MH5921> of his sons<MH1121> and his daughters<MH1323>. But David<MH1732> felt<MH2388> strengthened<MH2388> in the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>, the son<MH1121> of Ahimelech<MH288>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> bring<MH5066> me the ephod<MH646>.&#8221; So Abiathar<MH54> brought<MH5066> the ephod<MH646> to David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Shall I pursue<MH7291, 310> this<MH2088> band<MH1416> of<MH1416> raiders<MH1416>? Will I overtake<MH5381> them?&#8221; And He said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Pursue<MH7291>, for you will certainly<MH5381> overtake<MH5381> them, and you will certainly<MH5337> rescue<MH5337> <i>everyone.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> left<MH1980>, he and the six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who<MH834> were with him, and they came<MH935> to the brook<MH5158a> Besor<MH1308>, <i>where some</i> who were left<MH3498> behind<MH3498> stayed<MH5975>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> pursued<MH7291>, he and four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376>, for two hundred<MH3967> who<MH834> were too<MH4480> exhausted<MH6296> to cross<MH5674a> the brook<MH5158a> Besor<MH1308> stayed<MH5975> <i>behind.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now they found<MH4672> an Egyptian<MH4713> in the field<MH7704> and brought<MH3947> him to David<MH1732>, and gave<MH5414> him bread<MH3899> and he ate<MH398>, and they provided<MH8248> him water<MH4325> to<MH8248> drink<MH8248>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They also gave<MH5414> him a slice<MH6400> of fig<MH1690> cake<MH1690> and two<MH8147> cakes<MH6778> of<MH6778> raisins<MH6778>, and he ate<MH398>; then his spirit<MH7307> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>revived<MH7725>. For he had not eaten<MH398> bread<MH3899> or drunk<MH8354> water<MH4325> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117> and three<MH7969> nights<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;To whom<MH4310> do you belong? And where<MH335> are you from?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;I am a young<MH5288> man<MH5288> of Egypt<MH4713>, a servant<MH5650> of an Amalekite<MH6003>; and my master<MH113> abandoned<MH5800a> me when<MH3588> I became<MH2470a> sick<MH2470a> three<MH7969> days<MH3117> ago. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>We carried<MH6584> out<MH6584> an<MH6584> attack<MH6584> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Negev<MH5045> of the Cherethites<MH3774>, and on that which<MH834> belongs to Judah<MH3063>, and on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Negev<MH5045> of Caleb<MH3612>, and we burned<MH8313> Ziklag<MH6860> with fire<MH784>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Will you bring<MH3381> me down<MH3381> to this<MH2088> band<MH1416> of<MH1416> raiders<MH1416>?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Swear<MH7650> to me by God<MH430> that you will not kill<MH4191> me or hand<MH5462, 3027> me over<MH5462> to my master<MH113>, and I will bring<MH3381> you down<MH3381> to this<MH2088> band<MH1416>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now when he had brought<MH3381> him down<MH3381>, behold<MH2009>, they were dispersed<MH5203> over<MH5921> all<MH3605> the land<MH776>, eating<MH398> and drinking<MH8354> and celebrating<MH2287> because of all<MH3605> the great<MH1419> plunder<MH7998> that they had taken<MH3947> from the land<MH776> of the Philistines<MH6430> and from the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>slaughtered<MH5221> them from the twilight<MH5399> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>until<MH5704> the evening<MH6153> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>the next<MH4283> day<MH4283>; and not a man<MH376> of them escaped<MH4422>, except<MH3588, 518> four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> who<MH834> rode<MH7392> on camels<MH1581> and fled<MH1272>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> recovered<MH5337> all<MH3605> that the Amalekites<MH6002> had taken<MH3947>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>rescued<MH5337> his two<MH8147> wives<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And nothing<MH3808> of theirs<MH1992a> was<MH5737c> missing<MH5737c>, whether<MH4480> small<MH6996b> or<MH5704> great<MH1419>, sons<MH1121> or daughters<MH1323>, plunder<MH7998>, or<MH5704> anything<MH3605> that they had taken<MH3947> for themselves<MH1992a>; David<MH1732> brought<MH7725> <i>it</i> all<MH3605> back<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>captured<MH3947> all<MH3605> the sheep<MH6629> and the cattle<MH1241> <i>which the people</i> drove<MH5090a> ahead<MH6440> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>the <i>other</i> livestock<MH4735>, and they said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH2088> is David&#8217;s<MH1732> plunder<MH7998>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Plunder Is Divided</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When David<MH1732> came<MH935> to the two hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who<MH834> were too<MH4480> exhausted<MH6296> to follow<MH1980, 310> David<MH1732> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>had been left<MH3427> behind<MH3427> at the brook<MH5158a> Besor<MH1308>, and they went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> David<MH1732> and to meet<MH7122> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with him, then David<MH1732> approached<MH5066> the people<MH5971a> and greeted<MH7592, 7965> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the wicked<MH7451a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>worthless<MH1100> men<MH376> among<MH4480> those who<MH834> went<MH1980> with David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;Since<MH3282, 834> they did not go<MH1980> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>us, we will not give<MH5414> them any<MH4480> of the spoils<MH7998> that we have recovered<MH5337>, except<MH3588, 518> to every<MH376> man<MH376> his wife<MH802> and his children<MH1121>, so that they may lead<MH5090a> <i>them</i> away<MH5090a> and leave<MH1980>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;You must not do<MH6213a> so<MH3651>, my brothers<MH251>, with what<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has given<MH5414> us, for He has protected<MH8104> us and handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to us the band<MH1416> of<MH1416> raiders<MH1416> that came<MH935> against<MH5921> us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/30-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And who<MH4310> will listen<MH8085> to you in this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>?
