</table><br/> London: Geoff Miller was appointed to the new role of national selector for the England cricket team on Friday. <br/><br/>The former England spinner was picked over David Graveney, who was chairman of selectors for 11 years, and will take up a new role of performance manager, overseeing the development of young players. <br/><br/>The 55-year-old Miller will be joined on a four-man panel of selectors by England coach Peter Moores and part-timers Ashley Giles and James Whitaker. <br/><br/>"Geoff is the ideal person to take on this new and important role," managing director of England cricket Hugh Morris said. "He has played at the highest level, possesses in-depth knowledge of the domestic game and as a member of the selection panel for the past seven years he has extensive experience of the selection process." <br/><br/>Miller had sat with Graveney and Moores on the previous panel of selectors, which was disbanded as part of last year's review of English cricket by former PGA Europe Tour executive director Ken Schofield. <br/><br/>The review was set up following England's humiliating 5-0 series loss to Australia in the Ashes series and was designed to help improve the standard of the national team. <br/><br/>Giles, Warwickshire director of cricket, only retired from playing in August because of injury, while Whitaker managed England's 'A' and under-19 teams after a 20-year playing career that included English County Championships with Leicestershire in 1996 and '98. <br/><br/>"As someone who has only recently retired from international cricket, Ashley Giles will be able to bring a new perspective to the panel and a keen understanding of what it takes to succeed in the modern game," Morris said. <br/><br/>Graveney was in charge of selection throughout England's rise from last in the
