The first part of the paper deals with origination of the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava (1919); the second part pays attention to the origination of the Seminar of Education and beginnings of teaching of pedagogy at the given faculty, based on archival research findings; and the third part of the paper outlines a strife for the character of pedagogy after the sociopolitical changes in 1989. In the period of socialism, which lasted in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1989, pedagogy lost its international character and was influenced exclusively by the Russian pedagogy based on the principles of Marxism-Leninism. A more complex reflection of pedagogy of this period has been missing so far, which represents a challenge for us, historians of Until the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the study subject history of education was part of the curriculum of teacher training schools which were established by the school act of 1868. However, it consisted only of an overview of pedagogical past and the knowledge had an informative character. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia (1918), history of education developed in two directions: firstly, at teacher training schools (orig. učiteľské ústavy), where together with theory of education (orig. pedagogika) and didactics (orig. didaktika) it formed basic educational disciplines and secondly, as an academic discipline at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava. The incorporation of history of education into academic education, either at the Faculty of Arts (since 1922/23) or later at faculties of education (from 1946) stimulated development of this academic discipline and historical-educational research as well. The aim of the paper is to reconstruct individual phases and turning points in the development of history of education in Slovakia, accentuating the period from the establishment of Czechoslovakia to research in Slo-vakia, which is pointed out e.g. by Hamada (1995); Michalička (2004, 2012); Kudláčová (2009, 2010, 2012), resulted in a state in which educational past is no longer reflected and it causes disturbance of historical continuity of pedagogy. Historians of education are aware of it and they have been pointing out the importance of reflection on educational past. The aim of this paper is: 1) to point out the development and transformations in the perception of the academic discipline history of education and historical-educational research in Slovakia, especially in the 20 th century; 2) to identify current problems in the examined field and 3) to point out possible foundations and direction in the given field in Slovak as well as broader European context. His concept of education as well as his ideas on how to resolve many of the world’s complex problems were at the time highly progressive and have influenced the society’s way of thinking in Slovakia as well. After the collapse of Austria-Hungarian Monarchy and due to strong Magyarization, education and training in Slovakia were in bad situation. Under the influence of the protagonists of the reform movement in the Czech Republic, for example Václav Příhoda, Ludmila Žofková, František Musil, inspirations of educational reform movement began to develop in Slovakia, too. Its most important centre was the city Trnava. The arrival of Musil in 1931 marked the beginning of organized education of teachers, which acquired the official status of Trnava Education Seminar in the year 1934 and together with the journal Our School considerably influenced teachers in the Trnava region and in other parts of Slovakia, too. In the first years after the end of the war, attempts at political, economic, or cultural contacts with Western countries could still be observed in several Central European countries for some time. Universities maintained their traditional internal academic structure, organisation of student enrolment, content of studies, etc. This situation was mainly fostered by the needs of the country&#39;s reconstruction, which at the same time masked the political pragmatism of the new, but not yet fully strengthened, people&#39;s democratic regimes. Gradually, they became a priority concern of the Communist Party, whose aim was to gain ideological control over them. The following study focuses on specific features of the educational system in the Slovak territory after the First World War. The study deals with major issues that occurred as a result of the post-war situation and were closely related to the formation of the new Czechoslovak state. Besides some key factors which influenced the transformation and development of education (legislation, the issue of language and national identity), it also discusses individual levels of education. In relation to the changes in the system of education in the studied period, the spread of female education in its various institutionalized and non-institutionalized forms is mentioned. After the establishment of a common state of Czechs and Slovaks – the 1st Czechoslovak Republic (1918), there were new conditions for reform movements and ideas of pedagogical thinking. The study is focusing on social events and transformations that guide the school system and education. The paper analyses specifically, what inspired the education and practical functioning of schools in Slovakia in this new state formation of the multinational Republic.
