<span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>For if<MG1487> Abraham<MG11> was justified<MG1344> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>by works<MG2041>, he has<MG2192> something<MG2745> to<MG2745> boast<MG2745> about<MG2745>; but not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>before<MG4314> God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>For what<MG5101> does the Scripture<MG1124> say<MG3004>? “ABRAHAM<MG11> BELIEVED<MG4100> GOD<MG2316>, AND IT WAS CREDITED<MG3049> TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS<MG1343>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> to the one who works<MG2038b>, the wages<MG3408> are not credited<MG3049> as a favor<MG5485>, but as what<MG3783> is<MG3783> due<MG3783>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But to the one who does not work<MG2038b>, but believes<MG4100> in Him who justifies<MG1344> the ungodly<MG765>, his faith<MG4102> is credited<MG3049> as righteousness<MG1343>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>just<MG2509> as<MG2509> David<MG1160b> also<MG2532> speaks<MG3004> of the blessing<MG3108> of the person<MG444> to whom<MG3739> God<MG2316> credits<MG3049> righteousness<MG1343> apart<MG5565> from works<MG2041>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“BLESSED<MG3107> ARE THOSE WHOSE<MG3739> LAWLESS<MG458> DEEDS<MG458> HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN<MG863>, <t><p class="indent1">AND WHOSE<MG3739> SINS<MG266> HAVE BEEN COVERED<MG1943>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“BLESSED<MG3107> IS THE MAN<MG435> WHOSE<MG3739> SIN<MG266> THE LORD<MG2962> WILL NOT TAKE<MG3049> INTO<MG3049> ACCOUNT<MG3049>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Is this<MG3778> blessing<MG3108> then<MG3767> on <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>the circumcised<MG4061>, or<MG2228> on <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>the uncircumcised<MG203> also<MG2532>? For we say<MG3004>, “FAITH<MG4102> WAS CREDITED<MG3049> TO ABRAHAM<MG11> AS RIGHTEOUSNESS<MG1343>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>How<MG4459> then<MG3767> was it credited<MG3049>? While he was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>circumcised<MG4061>, or<MG2228> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>uncircumcised<MG203>? Not while <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>circumcised<MG4061>, but while <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>uncircumcised<MG203>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and he received<MG2983> the sign<MG4592> of circumcision<MG4061>, a seal<MG4973> of the righteousness<MG1343> of the faith<MG4102> which <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>he had while uncircumcised<MG203>, so<MG1519> that<MG1519> he might be the father<MG3962> of all<MG3956> who believe<MG4100> without<MG203> being<MG203> circumcised<MG203>, that righteousness<MG1343> might be credited<MG3049> to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and the father<MG3962> of circumcision<MG4061> to those<MG3588> who not only<MG3440> are of the circumcision<MG4061>, but who also<MG2532> follow<MG4748> in the steps<MG2487> of the faith<MG4102> of our father<MG3962> Abraham<MG11> which <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>he had while uncircumcised<MG203>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>For the promise<MG1860> to Abraham<MG11> or<MG2228> to his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>descendants<MG4690> that he would be heir<MG2818> of the world<MG2889> was not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>through<MG1223> the Law<MG3551>, but through<MG1223> the righteousness<MG1343> of faith<MG4102>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>For if<MG1487> those<MG3588> who are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>of the Law<MG3551> are heirs<MG2818>, then faith<MG4102> is made<MG2758> void<MG2758> and the promise<MG1860> is nullified<MG2673>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>for the Law<MG3551> brings<MG2716> about<MG2716> wrath<MG3709>, but where<MG3757> there is no<MG3756> law<MG3551>, there also is no<MG3756> violation<MG3847>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For this<MG3778> reason<MG1223> <i>it is</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>by faith<MG4102>, in<MG2443> order<MG2443> that<MG2443> <i>it may be</i> in<MG2596> accordance<MG2596> with<MG2596> grace<MG5485>, so<MG1519> that<MG1519> the promise<MG1860> will be guaranteed<MG949> to all<MG3956> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>descendants<MG4690>, not only<MG3440> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>those<MG3588> who are of the Law<MG3551>, but also<MG2532> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>those<MG3588> who are of the faith<MG4102> of Abraham<MG11>, who<MG3739> is the father<MG3962> of us all<MG3956>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>(as it is written<MG1125>: “I HAVE MADE<MG5087> YOU A FATHER<MG3962> OF MANY<MG4183> NATIONS<MG1484>”) in<MG2713> the<MG2713> presence<MG2713> of Him whom<MG3739> he believed<MG4100>, <i>that is,</i> God<MG2316>, who gives<MG2227> life<MG2227> to<MG2227> the dead<MG3498> and calls<MG2564> into being<MG1510> things that do not exist<MG1510>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>In hope<MG1680> against<MG1909> hope<MG1680> he believed<MG4100>, so<MG1519> that<MG1519> he might become<MG1096> a father<MG3962> of many<MG4183> nations<MG1484> according<MG2596> to that which had been spoken<MG3004>, “SO<MG3779> SHALL YOUR <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>DESCENDANTS<MG4690> BE.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/romans/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Without<MG3361> becoming<MG770> weak<MG770> in faith<MG4102> he contemplated<MG2657> his own<MG1438> body<MG4983>, now <i>as good as</i> dead<MG3499> since he was about<MG4225> a hundred<MG1541> years<MG1541> old<MG1541>, and the deadness<MG3500> of Sarah’s<MG4564> womb<MG3388>;
