But Elisha<MH477> said<MH559>, &#8220;As <i>surely as</i> the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a> and as you yourself<MH5315> live<MH2416a>, I will not leave<MH5800a> you.&#8221; So they went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Bethel<MH1008>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of the prophets<MH5030> who<MH834> <i>were at</i> Bethel<MH1008> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to Elisha<MH477> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Are<MH3045> you aware<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> will take<MH3947> away your master<MH113> from over<MH5921> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>you today<MH3117>?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Yes<MH1571>, I am<MH3045> aware<MH3045>; say<MH2814> nothing<MH2814> <i>about it.</i>&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Elisha<MH477>, please<MH4994> stay<MH3427> here<MH6311>, for the LORD<MH3068> has sent<MH7971> me to Jericho<MH3405>.&#8221; But he said<MH559>, &#8220;As <i>surely as</i> the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, and as you yourself<MH5315> live<MH2416a>, I will not leave<MH5800a> you.&#8221; So they came<MH935> to Jericho<MH3405>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of the prophets<MH5030> who<MH834> <i>were</i> at Jericho<MH3405> approached<MH5066> Elisha<MH477> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Do you know<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> will take<MH3947> away your master<MH113> from over<MH5921> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>you today<MH3117>?&#8221; And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>answered<MH559>, &#8220;Yes<MH1571>, I know<MH3045>; say<MH2814> nothing<MH2814> <i>about it.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Please<MH4994> stay<MH3427> here<MH6311>, for the LORD<MH3068> has sent<MH7971> me to the Jordan<MH3383>.&#8221; But he said<MH559>, &#8220;As <i>surely as</i> the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, and as you yourself<MH5315> live<MH2416a>, I will not leave<MH5800a> you.&#8221; So the two<MH8147> of them went<MH1980> on. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now fifty<MH2572> men<MH376> of the sons<MH1121> of the prophets<MH5030> went<MH1980> and stood<MH5975> opposite<MH4480, 5048> <i>them</i> at a distance<MH7350>, while the two<MH8147> of them stood<MH5975> by the Jordan<MH3383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Elijah<MH452> took<MH3947> his coat<MH155>, folded<MH1563> it, and struck<MH5221> the waters<MH4325>, and they were divided<MH2673> here<MH2008> and there<MH2008>, so that the two<MH8147> of them crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> on dry<MH2724> ground<MH2724>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When they had crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a>, Elijah<MH452> said<MH559> to Elisha<MH477>, &#8220;Ask<MH7592> <i>me</i> what<MH4100> I should do<MH6213a> for you before<MH2962> I am taken<MH3947> from you.&#8221; And Elisha<MH477> said<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> let a double<MH8147> portion<MH6310> of your spirit<MH7307> be upon me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, &#8220;You have asked<MH7592> a hard<MH7185> thing<MH7185>. <i>Nevertheless,</i> if<MH518> you see<MH7200> me when I am taken<MH3947> from you, it shall be so<MH3651> for you; but if<MH518> not, it shall not be <i>so.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And as they were walking<MH1980> along and talking<MH1696>, behold<MH2009>, a chariot<MH7393> of fire<MH784> <i>appeared</i> with horses<MH5483b> of fire<MH784>, and they separated<MH6504> the two<MH8147> of them. Then Elijah<MH452> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> by a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>whirlwind<MH5591b> to heaven<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Elisha<MH477> was watching<MH7200> <i>it</i> and he was crying<MH6817> out<MH6817>, &#8220;My father<MH1>, my father<MH1>, the chariot<MH7393> of Israel<MH3478> and its horsemen<MH6571b>!&#8221; And he did not see<MH7200> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Elijah again<MH5750>. Then he took<MH2388> hold<MH2388> of his own clothes<MH899b> and tore<MH7167> them in two<MH8147> pieces<MH7168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>He also took<MH7311> up<MH7311> the coat<MH155> of Elijah<MH452> that had fallen<MH5307> from him, and he went<MH7725> back<MH7725> and stood<MH5975> by the bank<MH8193> of the Jordan<MH3383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> the coat<MH155> of Elijah<MH452> that had fallen<MH5307> from him and struck<MH5221> the waters<MH4325>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;Where<MH346> is the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Elijah<MH452>?&#8221; And when he also<MH637> had struck<MH5221> the waters<MH4325>, they were divided<MH2673> here<MH2008> and there<MH2008>; and Elisha<MH477> crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a>. <p class="hdg">Elisha Succeeds Elijah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now when the sons<MH1121> of the prophets<MH5030> who<MH834> <i>were</i> at Jericho<MH3405> opposite<MH4480, 5048> <i>him</i> saw<MH7200> him, they said<MH559>, &#8220;The spirit<MH7307> of Elijah<MH452> has settled<MH5117> on Elisha<MH477>.&#8221; And they came<MH935> to meet<MH7122> him and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to the ground<MH776> before him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Behold<MH2009> now<MH4994>, there<MH3426> are<MH3426> with your servants<MH5650> fifty<MH2572> strong<MH2428> men<MH376>; please<MH4994> let them go<MH1980> and search<MH1245> for your master<MH113>, in<MH6435> case<MH6435> the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> has taken<MH5375> him up<MH5375> and cast<MH7993> him on some<MH259> mountain<MH2022> or<MH176> into some<MH259> valley<MH1516>.&#8221; But he said<MH559>, &#8220;You shall not send<MH7971> <i>anyone.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Yet when they urged<MH6484> him until<MH5704> he was<MH954> ashamed<MH954> <i>to refuse,</i> he said<MH559>, &#8220;Send<MH7971> <i>them.</i>&#8221; So they sent<MH7971> fifty<MH2572> men<MH376>; and they searched<MH1245> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, but did not find<MH4672> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>They returned<MH7725> to him while he was staying<MH3427> in Jericho<MH3405>; and he said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Did I not say<MH559> to you, &#8216;Do not go<MH1980>&#8217;?&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> said<MH559> to Elisha<MH477>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009> now, the site<MH4186> of the city<MH5892b> is pleasant<MH2896a>, as my lord<MH113> sees<MH7200>; but the water<MH4325> is bad<MH7451a> and the land<MH776> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>is<MH7921> unfruitful<MH7921>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Bring<MH3947> me a new<MH2319> jar<MH6746>, and put<MH7760> salt<MH4417> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>in it.&#8221; So they brought<MH3947> <i>it</i> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the spring<MH4161> of water<MH4325> and threw<MH7993> salt<MH4417> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>in it and said<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: &#8216;I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>purified<MH7495> these<MH428> waters<MH4325>; there shall not come<MH1961> from there<MH8033> death<MH4194> or <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>unfruitfulness<MH7921> any<MH5750> longer<MH5750>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So the waters<MH4325> have been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>purified<MH7495> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of Elisha<MH477> which<MH834> he spoke<MH1696>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from there<MH8033> to Bethel<MH1008>; and as he was going<MH5927> up<MH5927> by the road<MH1870>, <i>some</i> young<MH6996a> boys<MH5288> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the city<MH5892b> and ridiculed<MH7046> him and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, you baldhead<MH7142>; go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, you baldhead<MH7142>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>When he looked<MH6437> behind<MH310> him and saw<MH7200> them, he cursed<MH7043> them in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>.
