Elon Musk-owned social media platform, but Bluesky is not without challenges</strong></p> <p>In the week after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States for a second time, one million people joined previously little-known social media platform Bluesky.</p> <p>As of this week, the number of people joining the site had rocketed to one million each day.</p> <p>The mass migration is mostly down to users deciding to leave X, the social networking site formerly known as Twitter and now owned by the billionaire—and political ally of Trump—Elon Musk.</p> <p>Many academics have felt conflicted about their continued presence on the platform since Musk bought it for roughly $44 billion (£35bn) in 2022. In November last year, <a href="https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-europe-universities-2023-11-social-media-the-x-odus/">concerns were being raised</a> about how Musk’s changes to X’s application programming interface (API) harmed researchers’ ability to use data from the site.</p> <p>This summer, the higher education IT firm Jisc announced it would no longer post on X as it was concerned by the “direction in which X has been taken”. Researchers were also becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the proliferation of far-right content on the site, but <a href="https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-universities-2024-8-should-universities-consider-leaving-x/">efforts to regroup on alternative social media platforms</a> such as Mastodon and Threads never sustained momentum.</p> <p>Now, however, the sudden flood of users to Bluesky is prompting many researchers to follow suit.</p> <p><b>‘Low-quality posts’</b></p> <p>Janja Komljenovic, a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Research in Digital Education, recently deleted her account on X and has set up a Bluesky account instead.</p> <p>Her decision to move “coincided with the US election”, although she had been thinking about switching platforms for around a year. Since Musk took over, “it seemed there was far more advertising” and she saw “more and more low-quality posts” on X, she said.</p> <p>“The things I would see were so irrelevant, or stupid, or extremist,” she said. “There were fewer and fewer posts from my network that I would see.”</p> <p>“Among the people I talk to, everyone feels the same: we lost that room we had on X to chat, to exchange ideas,” she added.</p> <p>Komljenovic said she felt hopeful about Bluesky. “It’s not the same yet as Twitter was in the golden days, because for that you do need a large network and for network effects to kick in,” she said. “But now I feel like perhaps it’s a movement where you see bigger numbers.”</p> <p><b>Bluesky thinking</b></p> <p>Andy Tattersall, an information specialist at the University of Sheffield’s School of Medicine and Population Health, has decided to leave X permanently at the end of the year.</p> <p>“All my posts on X are about things that are bad about X and good about Bluesky,” he said.</p> <p>The uptick in academics using Bluesky seems to be playing out in Tattersall’s account. Two weeks ago, he had 200 followers; now he has more than 700. “This exodus [from X] is certainly the most notable I’ve seen,” he said.</p> <p>Tattersall expects research organisations and universities will be looking to join Bluesky within the next year. “I’m sure most of them are now talking about exit strategies on X.”</p> <p>Some researchers will miss the platform that X offered. One unnamed owner of an anonymous account that posted about problems in higher education, which had 25,000 followers, said that closing the account “was a difficult choice as it served multiple purposes, not least calling out a lot of problems in HE while not attracting personal ire”.</p> <p>But they found that “in spite of the good it potentially did”, hosting the account on X in its current form “was simply untenable”.</p> <p><b>Siloed spaces?</b></p> <p>Tattersall pointed out that certain functionalities, such as the ability to post videos and threaded messages, have only been added to Bluesky recently. “It hasn’t got the functionality X has got, but it’s getting there slowly,” he said.</p> <p>He also warned that while Bluesky might be enjoyed by academics at the moment, with its friendlier atmosphere to X, social media itself is “problematic” and that researchers may be mistaken to think Bluesky will “be a very different place to X forever”.</p> <p>“I think ultimately, five years down the line, we might be talking about all moving to another platform, and that’s the way of the digital world,” he said.</p> <p>Not everyone is looking to join the exodus. Daniel Gilman, a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge’s faculty of history, feels that academics should be reaching the largest audience possible.</p> <p>“One of the greatest strengths of academia—and the part I find most empowering—is engaging with people who think entirely differently from me,” he said. “Leaving platforms like X risks intensifying the echo chamber effect, as people retreat into increasingly siloed spaces.”</p> <p>While he is also on Bluesky, which he says he finds “a fun and fantastic niche for academics” that “has created space for meaningful academic connections”, he stressed that “no single platform can, or should, replace others entirely”.</p> <p>“Academic discourse thrives when we engage broadly, seeking collaboration and critique from diverse perspectives,” he said. “I’m all for joining Bluesky, just not for quitting X.”</p> <p>“I hope many people will join Bluesky who have views I disagree with.”</p> <p><i>Additional reporting by Sophie
