And he said<MH559>, “I brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> out of Egypt<MH4714> and led<MH935> you into the land<MH776> which<MH834> I have sworn<MH7650> to your fathers<MH1>; and I said<MH559>, ‘I will never<MH3808, 5769> break<MH6565a> My covenant<MH1285> with you, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and as for you, you shall not make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with the inhabitants<MH3427> of this<MH2088> land<MH776>; you shall tear<MH5422> down<MH5422> their altars<MH4196>.’ But you have not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>obeyed<MH8085, 6963> Me; what<MH4100> is this<MH2088> <i>thing that</i> you have done<MH6213a>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Therefore I also<MH1571> said<MH559>, ‘I will not drive<MH1644> them out<MH1644> from you; but they will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>become<MH1961> <i>like thorns</i> in your sides<MH6654>, and their gods<MH430> will be a snare<MH4170> to you.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now when the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, the people<MH5971a> raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So they named<MH7121, 8034> that place<MH4725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Bochim<MH1066>; and there<MH8033> they sacrificed<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Joshua Dies</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When Joshua<MH3091> had dismissed<MH7971> the people<MH5971a>, the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> went<MH1980>, each<MH376> one to his inheritance<MH5159>, to take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The people<MH5971a> served<MH5647> the LORD<MH3068> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of Joshua<MH3091>, and all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of the elders<MH2205> who<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>survived<MH748, 3117, 310> Joshua<MH3091>, who<MH834> had seen<MH7200> all<MH3605> the great<MH1419> work<MH4639> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> He had done<MH6213a> for Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126>, the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068>, died<MH4191> at the age<MH1121, 8141> of 110<MH3967, 6235>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And they buried<MH6912> him in the territory<MH1366> of his inheritance<MH5159> in Timnath-heres<MH8556a>, in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669>, north<MH6828> of Mount<MH2022> Gaash<MH1608>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>All<MH3605> that generation<MH1755> also<MH1571> were gathered<MH622> to their fathers<MH1>; and another<MH312> generation<MH1755> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> after<MH310> them who<MH834> did not know<MH3045> the LORD<MH3068>, nor even<MH1571> the work<MH4639> which<MH834> He had done<MH6213a> for Israel<MH3478>. <p class="hdg">Israel Serves the Baals</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> did<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>served<MH5647> the Baals<MH1168a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and they abandoned<MH5800a> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of their fathers<MH1>, who had brought<MH3318> them out<MH3318> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, and they followed<MH1980, 310> other<MH312> gods<MH430> from the gods<MH430> of the peoples<MH5971a> who<MH834> were around<MH5439> them, and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to them; so they provoked<MH3707> the LORD<MH3068> to<MH3707> anger<MH3707>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>They abandoned<MH5800a> the LORD<MH3068> and served<MH5647> Baal<MH1168a> and the Ashtaroth<MH6252b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the anger<MH639> of the LORD<MH3068> burned<MH2734> against Israel<MH3478>, and He handed<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to plunderers<MH8154>, and they plundered<MH8155> them; and He sold<MH4376> them into the hands<MH3027> of their enemies<MH340> around<MH5439> <i>them,</i> so that they could<MH3201> no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> stand<MH5975> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>against<MH6440> their enemies<MH340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Wherever<MH3605, 834> they went<MH3318>, the hand<MH3027> of the LORD<MH3068> was against them for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>evil<MH7463a>, as the LORD<MH3068> had spoken<MH1696> and just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the LORD<MH3068> had sworn<MH7650> to them, so that they were<MH6887a> severely<MH3966> distressed<MH6887a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> raised<MH6965> up<MH6965> judges<MH8199> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>who saved<MH3467> them from the hands<MH3027> of those who plundered<MH8154> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Yet<MH1571> they did not listen<MH8085> to their judges<MH8199>, for they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>committed<MH2181> infidelity<MH2181> with<MH310> other<MH312> gods<MH430> and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to them.
