Or<MH176> <i>even</i> if<MH3863> we had died<MH4191> in this<MH2088> wilderness<MH4057b>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So why<MH4100> is the LORD<MH3068> bringing<MH935> us into this<MH2088> land<MH776> to fall<MH5307> by the sword<MH2719>? Our wives<MH802> and our little<MH2945> ones<MH2945> will become<MH1961> plunder<MH957>! Would it not be better<MH2896a> for us to return<MH7725> to Egypt<MH4714>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So they said<MH559> to one<MH376> another<MH251>, “Let’s appoint<MH5414> a leader<MH7218> and return<MH7725> to Egypt<MH4714>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> and Aaron<MH175> fell<MH5307> on their faces<MH6440> in the presence<MH6440> of all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> of the congregation<MH5712> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126> and Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312>, of those who had spied<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>, tore<MH7167> their clothes<MH899b>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and they spoke<MH559> to all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, saying<MH559>, “The land<MH776> which<MH834> we passed<MH5674a> through to spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> is an exceedingly<MH3966> good<MH2896a> land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>If<MH518> the LORD<MH3068> is pleased<MH2654a> with us, then He will bring<MH935> us into this<MH2088> land<MH776> and give<MH5414> it to us—a land<MH776> which<MH834> flows<MH2100> with milk<MH2461> and honey<MH1706>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Only<MH389> do not rebel<MH4775> against the LORD<MH3068>; and do not fear<MH3372a> the people<MH5971a> of the land<MH776>, for they will be our <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>prey<MH3899>. Their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>protection<MH6738> is gone<MH5493> from them, and the LORD<MH3068> is with us; do not fear<MH3372a> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712> said<MH559> to stone<MH7275> them with stones<MH68>. Then the glory<MH3519b> of the LORD<MH3068> appeared<MH7200> in the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150> to all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="hdg">Moses Pleads for the People</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, “How<MH575> long<MH5704> will this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> be<MH5006> disrespectful<MH5006> to Me? And how<MH575> long<MH5704> will they not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>believe<MH539> in Me, despite all<MH3605> the signs<MH226> that I have performed<MH6213a> in their midst<MH7130>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>I will strike<MH5221> them with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>plague<MH1698> and dispossess<MH3423> them, and I will make<MH6213a> you into a nation<MH1471> greater<MH1419> and mightier<MH6099> than<MH4480> they.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to the LORD<MH3068>, “Then the Egyptians<MH4714> will hear<MH8085> of it, for by Your strength<MH3581b> You brought<MH5927> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> up<MH5927> from their midst<MH7130>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and they will tell<MH559> <i>it</i> to the inhabitants<MH3427> of this<MH2088> land<MH776>. They have heard<MH8085> that You, LORD<MH3068>, are in the midst<MH7130> of this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>, because<MH834> You, LORD<MH3068>, are seen<MH7200> eye<MH5869> to eye<MH5869>, while Your cloud<MH6051> stands<MH5975> over<MH5921> them; and You go<MH1980> before<MH6440> them in a pillar<MH5982> of cloud<MH6051> by day<MH3119>, and in a pillar<MH5982> of fire<MH784> by night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now if You put<MH4191> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>all<MH376> at once<MH259>, then the nations<MH1471> who<MH834> have heard<MH8085> of Your fame<MH8088> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>say<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>‘Since<MH4480> the LORD<MH3068> could<MH3201> not bring<MH935> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> into the land<MH776> which<MH834> He promised<MH7650> them by<MH7650> oath<MH7650>, He slaughtered<MH7819> them in the wilderness<MH4057b>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So now<MH6258>, please<MH4994>, let the power<MH3581b> of the Lord<MH136> be<MH1431> great<MH1431>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> You have declared<MH1696>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>‘The LORD<MH3068> is slow<MH750> to anger<MH639> and abundant<MH7227a> in mercy<MH2617a>, forgiving<MH5375> wrongdoing<MH5771> and violation<MH6588> <i>of His Law;</i> but He will by<MH5352> no<MH3808> means<MH5352> leave<MH5352> <i>the guilty</i> unpunished<MH5352>, inflicting<MH6485> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>punishment<MH5771> of the fathers<MH1> on the children<MH1121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>to the third<MH8029> and the fourth<MH7256> <i>generations.</i>’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> forgive<MH5545> the guilt<MH5771> of this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> in accordance with the greatness<MH1433> of Your mercy<MH2617a>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> You also have forgiven<MH5375> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>, from Egypt<MH4714> even until<MH5704> now<MH2008>.” <p class="hdg">The LORD Pardons and Rebukes</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “I have forgiven<MH5545> <i>them</i> in accordance with your word<MH1697>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>however<MH199>, as I live<MH2416a>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>all<MH3605> the earth<MH776> will be filled<MH4390> with the glory<MH3519b> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Certainly<MH3588> all<MH3605> the people<MH376> who have seen<MH7200> My glory<MH3519b> and My signs<MH226> which<MH834> I performed<MH6213a> in Egypt<MH4714> and in the wilderness<MH4057b>, yet have put<MH5254> Me to<MH5254> the<MH5254> test<MH5254> these<MH2088> ten<MH6235> times<MH6471> and have not listened<MH8085> to My voice<MH6963>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>shall by no<MH518> means<MH518> see<MH7200> the land<MH776> which<MH834> I swore<MH7650> to their fathers<MH1>, nor<MH3808> shall any<MH3605> of those who were<MH5006> disrespectful<MH5006> to Me see<MH7200> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But as for My servant<MH5650> Caleb<MH3612>, because<MH6118> he has had<MH1961, 5973> a different<MH312> spirit<MH7307> and has followed<MH310> Me fully<MH4390>, I will bring<MH935> him into the land<MH776> which<MH834> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>entered<MH935>, and his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> shall take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now the Amalekites<MH6003> and the Canaanites<MH3669a> live<MH3427> in the valleys<MH6010>; turn<MH6437> tomorrow<MH4279> and set<MH5265> out<MH5265> for the wilderness<MH4057b> by the way<MH1870> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Red<MH5488> Sea<MH3220>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872> and Aaron<MH175> again, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“How<MH4970> long<MH5704, 4970> <i>shall I put up</i> with this<MH2088> evil<MH7451a> congregation<MH5712> who<MH834> are grumbling<MH3885b> against<MH5921> Me? I have heard<MH8085> the complaints<MH8519b> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> which<MH834> they are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>voicing<MH3885b> against<MH5921> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Say<MH559> to them, ‘As I live<MH2416a>,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, ‘just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you have spoken<MH1696> in My hearing<MH241>, so<MH3651> I will do<MH6213a> to you; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>your dead<MH6297> bodies<MH6297> will fall<MH5307> in this<MH2088> wilderness<MH4057b>, all<MH3605> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>numbered<MH6485> men according to your complete<MH3605> number<MH4557> from twenty<MH6242> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605>, who<MH834> have grumbled<MH3885b> against<MH5921> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>By no<MH518> means<MH518> will you come<MH935> into the land<MH776> where<MH834> I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>swore<MH5375, 3027> to settle<MH7931> you, except<MH3588, 518> for Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312> and Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Your children<MH2945>, however, whom<MH834> you said<MH559> would become<MH1961> plunder<MH957>—I will bring<MH935> them in<MH935>, and they will know<MH3045> the land<MH776> which<MH834> you have rejected<MH3988a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But as for you, your dead<MH6297> bodies<MH6297> will fall<MH5307> in this<MH2088> wilderness<MH4057b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Also, your sons<MH1121> will be shepherds<MH7462a> in the wilderness<MH4057b> for forty<MH705> years<MH8141>, and they will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>suffer<MH5375> <i>for</i> your unfaithfulness<MH2184>, until<MH5704> your bodies<MH6297> perish<MH8552> in the wilderness<MH4057b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>In accordance with the number<MH4557> of days<MH3117> that you spied<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>, forty<MH705> days<MH3117>, for every<MH3117> day<MH3117> you shall suffer<MH5375> the punishment<MH5771> for<MH5771> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>guilt<MH5771> a year<MH8141>, <i>that is,</i> forty<MH705> years<MH8141>, and you will know<MH3045> My opposition<MH8569>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>I, the LORD<MH3068>, have spoken<MH1696>, I certainly<MH518, 3808> will do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> to all<MH3605> this<MH2088> evil<MH7451a> congregation<MH5712> who are gathered<MH3259> together<MH3259> against<MH5921> Me. They shall be<MH8552> worn<MH8552> out<MH8552> in this<MH2088> wilderness<MH4057b>, and there<MH8033> they shall die<MH4191>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>As for the men<MH376> whom<MH834> Moses<MH4872> sent<MH7971> to spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>, and who returned<MH7725> and led all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712> to grumble<MH3885b> against<MH5921> him by bringing<MH3318> a bad<MH1681> report<MH1681> about<MH5921> the land<MH776>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>those men<MH376> who brought<MH3318> the bad<MH7451a> report<MH1681> of the land<MH776> also died<MH4191> by a plague<MH4046> in the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But Joshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126> and Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312> remained<MH2421a> alive<MH2421a> out of those<MH1992a> men<MH376> who went<MH1980> to spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>. <p class="hdg">Israel Repulsed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Now when Moses<MH4872> spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, the people<MH5971a> mourned<MH56> greatly<MH3966>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>In the morning<MH1242>, however, they got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>ridge<MH7218> of the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, saying<MH559>, “Here<MH2009> we are; and we will go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the place<MH4725> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>promised<MH559>, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>we have sinned<MH2398>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>But Moses<MH4872> said<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> then<MH2088> are you violating<MH5674a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>, when <i>doing so</i> will not succeed<MH6743b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Do not go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, for the LORD<MH3068> is not among<MH7130> you, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>to prevent<MH3808> you from being defeated<MH5062> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>by your enemies<MH340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/14-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>For the Amalekites<MH6003> and the Canaanites<MH3669a> will be there<MH8033> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>to confront<MH6440> you, and you will fall<MH5307> by the sword<MH2719>, since<MH3588, 5921, 3651> you have turned<MH7725> back<MH7725> from following<MH310> the LORD<MH3068>.
