The Hebrew root for "do" is "עָשָׂה" (asah), which means to make, accomplish, or act with purpose. It reflects God's active role in the unfolding of His divine plan. In the context of Numbers 33, God is reminding the Israelites of His sovereignty and the consequences of disobedience. This serves as a powerful reminder that God's actions are not arbitrary but are deeply connected to His covenant promises and justice.
to you
The pronoun "you" is directed at the Israelites, God's chosen people. It is a personal address, emphasizing the relational aspect of God's covenant. Historically, the Israelites were set apart to be a holy nation, a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:6). This personal address serves as a reminder of their unique identity and the responsibilities that come with it. It also highlights the personal nature of God's dealings with His people, where each individual and the community as a whole are accountable to Him.
what I had planned
The phrase "what I had planned" indicates God's foreknowledge and intentionality. The Hebrew word for "planned" is "חָשַׁב" (chashab), which means to think, plan, or calculate. This reflects the idea that God’s actions are not reactive but are part of a divine strategy. In the broader biblical narrative, this speaks to the omniscience of God, who knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). It reassures believers that God’s plans are perfect and just, even when they involve discipline.
to do to them
The "them" refers to the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, whom God had judged for their iniquity. The historical context here is crucial; the Canaanites were known for practices that were abhorrent to God, such as idolatry and child sacrifice. God's judgment on them was both a fulfillment of His promise to Abraham and a demonstration of His holiness. For the Israelites, this serves as a sobering warning that they are not immune to judgment if they fall into the same sins. It underscores the biblical principle that God is impartial and that His justice applies to all nations, including His chosen people.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(56) Moreover it shall come to pass . . . --Better, And it shall come to pass that, as I have thought (or, determined) to do unto them, so will I do unto you. It must be borne in mind that the idolatrous inhabitants of Canaan were never wholly exterminated, and the pernicious influence which they exercised was felt throughout the whole of the history of the Israelites until the judgments threatened against them were finally executed in the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 56. - I shaft do unto you as I thought to do unto them, i.e., I shall execute by other hands upon you the sentence of dispossession which ye shall have refused to execute upon the Canaanites. The threat (although in fact fulfilled) does not necessarily involve any prophecy, since to settle down among the remnants of the heathen was a course of action which would obviously and for many reasons commend itself to the Israelites. Indolence and cowardice were consulted by such a policy as much as the natural feelings of pity towards vanquished and apparently harmless foes. The command to extirpate was certainly justified in this case (if it could be in any) by the unhappy consequences of its neglect. Israel being what he was, and so little severed in anything but religion from the ancient heathen, his only chance of future happiness lay in keeping himself from any contact with them. On the morality of the command itself, see on the passages referred to, and on the slaughter of the Midianites. As a fact, the extirpation of the conquered did not offend the moral sense of the Jews then any more than it did that of our heathen Saxon ancestors. Where both races could not dwell in security, it was a matter of course that the weaker was destroyed. Such a command was therefore justified at that time by the end to be attained, because it was not contrary to the moral law as then revealed, or to the moral sense as then educated. Being in itself a lawful proceeding, it was made a religious proceeding, and taken out of the category of selfish violence by being made a direct command of God.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
And then
וְהָיָ֗ה (wə·hā·yāh)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, be

I will do to you
אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (’e·‘ĕ·śeh)
Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singular
Strong's 6213: To do, make

what
כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (ka·’ă·šer)
Preposition-k | Pronoun - relative
Strong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order that

I had planned
דִּמִּ֛יתִי (dim·mî·ṯî)
Verb - Piel - Perfect - first person common singular
Strong's 1819: To compare, to resemble, liken, consider

to do to them.”
לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (la·‘ă·śō·wṯ)
Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct
Strong's 6213: To do, make

Links
Numbers 33:56 NIV
Numbers 33:56 NLT
Numbers 33:56 ESV
Numbers 33:56 NASB
Numbers 33:56 KJV

Numbers 33:56 BibleApps.com
Numbers 33:56 Biblia Paralela
Numbers 33:56 Chinese Bible
Numbers 33:56 French Bible
Numbers 33:56 Catholic Bible

OT Law: Numbers 33:56 It shall happen that as I thought (Nu Num.)
