field-item-last field-item-0" property="content:encoded"> <p><strong>Car thefts became a growing problem during the pandemic and continue to wreak havoc on drivers worldwide as thieves began to employ new methods to commit their crimes. Hyundai and Kia, two brands suffering from theft, have successfully reduced stolen vehicles after releasing their anti-theft software despite failing to intimidate thieves thoroughly.</strong></p> <p>Kia and its parent company, Hyundai, have been suffering significantly from car thefts, thanks to a TikTok video released in July 2022 that demonstrated how to hot wire a Kia or Hyundai model using only a USB connector. The number of stolen Kia's and Hyundai's soared from 1,207 in 2019 to 6,210 in 2022 in the US only. The number of thefts climbed so remarkably that the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recommended YouTube and TikTok to bring down the 'How to' videos regarding stealing vehicles. </p> <p>The social media-triggered theft spree has become much worse in 2023. NICB figures show that 48,445 Hyundai Elentras and 42,813 Hyundai Sonatas were stolen in 2023 in the US, representing the top two car models targeted by thieves. Third place belonged to Kia Optima, with around 30,000 thefts. Kia had six models on the list of most stolen cars, including Soul, Forte, and Sportage, which were stolen over 21,000 times, over 16,000 times, and around 16,000 times, respectively.</p> <p>Worse, the social media challenge among thieves has resulted in eight fatalities and 14 car accidents in the US so far, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). These developments have caused panic among drivers, as between the first half of 2020 and the first half of 2023, insurance claims for Hyundai and Kia models increased over 1000% in the US, according to CNN.</p> <p>Two carmakers responded to the wave of thefts by releasing software updates. The most recent upgrade, released in February 2024, covers four million cars. The upgrade sets the factory alarm and activates the 'ignition kill' feature when the doors are locked with the key fob, preventing thieves from starting the car. According to insurance data, the Highway Loss Data Institute said the theft claims had dropped 53% in early August. Vehicle theft has shrunk by 64% overall, showing a remarkable drop in thefts in Kia and Hyundai models. </p> <h2>What other solutions are there? </h2> <p>Many OEMs prefer to supply their anti-theft systems from the vehicle anti-theft market, which, according to KBV Research, is expected to reach a volume of $20.4 billion by 2028. </p> <p>Developing smart vehicle anti-theft solutions includes various technologies, including sensors, electronic locking and latch systems. Regarding patents, Hyundai Motor is far ahead among OEMs in anti-theft solutions. Other OEMs coming forward in this area are BYD, Ford, Porsche, General Motors and Toyota. Toyota's anti-theft system integrates with the keyless system and includes a glass breakage sensor (GBS) with a highly sensitive microphone to detect any intrusions. </p> <h2>Drivers need to take additional measures</h2> <p>Vehicle theft is a <a href="https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/safety/europe/features/protecting-fleet-vehicles-car-theft-rises-across-europe?a=API07&t%5B0%5D=Safety&t%5B1%5D=Insurance&t%5B2%5D=Fleet%20Europe%20Days&curl=1" target="_blank">major issue in Europe</a> and the US and is emerging as a severe threat to fleets. Recent research revealed that 45% of small fleets don't even have vehicle security measures. Eurostat figures reveal that Italy is the top hot spot for thefts, where 131,679 vehicles were stolen in 2023. </p> <p>Countering vehicle theft is not only possible with software updates, however. Fleets are adopting new methods to complement the methods, from double-checking doors and windows to conventional car locking wheel nuts. Kia and Hyundai's software update is a significant win against thefts, but to avoid thefts 100% requires a solid approach to vehicle security, especially for fleets. </p> <p><em><strong>Main
