This theme underscores the persistent rebellion of humanity against God's will and the cost of delivering His message.<br><br><b>Old Testament Context</b><br><br>In the Old Testament, prophets were often met with hostility and violence. Their role was to call the people of Israel back to faithfulness, denouncing idolatry and injustice. This often put them at odds with the ruling authorities and the general populace. <br><br>One of the earliest examples is the prophet Zechariah, son of Jehoiada, who was stoned to death by order of King Joash. This event is recorded in <a href="/2_chronicles/24-20.htm">2 Chronicles 24:20-21</a>: "Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said to them, 'This is what God says: Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has forsaken you.' But they conspired against him, and by order of the king, they stoned him in the courtyard of the house of the LORD."<br><br>The prophet Jeremiah also faced severe persecution. He was beaten, put in stocks (<a href="/jeremiah/20-2.htm">Jeremiah 20:2</a>), and later thrown into a cistern (<a href="/jeremiah/38-6.htm">Jeremiah 38:6</a>) for his prophecies against Jerusalem.<br><br><b>New Testament Context</b><br><br>The New Testament continues this theme with the persecution of apostles and early Christian leaders. Jesus Himself foretold the suffering and martyrdom that His followers would endure. In <a href="/matthew/23-34.htm">Matthew 23:34</a>, He declares, "Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town."<br><br>The martyrdom of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is a poignant example. <a href="/acts/7-59.htm">Acts 7:59-60</a> recounts, "While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' And when he had said this, he fell asleep."<br><br>The apostle James, the brother of John, was also killed by the sword under King Herod's orders, as recorded in <a href="/acts/12-2.htm">Acts 12:2</a>.<br><br><b>Theological Implications</b><br><br>The killing of prophets and apostles highlights the cost of discipleship and the resistance of the world to God's truth. It serves as a sobering reminder of the spiritual battle between light and darkness. Jesus' lament over Jerusalem in <a href="/matthew/23-37.htm">Matthew 23:37</a> encapsulates this struggle: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!"<br><br>This theme also points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the greatest prophet and apostle, who was crucified for the sins of humanity.
