Chains are mentioned in several contexts throughout the Scriptures, reflecting their significance in ancient culture and spiritual symbolism.

Literal Chains

Chains were commonly used in ancient times for binding prisoners and captives. In the Old Testament, chains are often associated with captivity and subjugation. For instance, in 2 Kings 25:7, King Zedekiah is captured by the Babylonians, and "they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon." This use of chains signifies the physical restraint and humiliation of those defeated in battle.

In the New Testament, chains are similarly used to describe the imprisonment of individuals. The Apostle Paul frequently refers to his own chains as a literal representation of his imprisonment for the sake of the Gospel. In Acts 28:20, Paul states, "For this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain." Here, chains symbolize the physical limitations imposed on Paul due to his ministry.

Metaphorical Chains

Beyond their literal use, chains also carry metaphorical meanings in the Bible. They often symbolize spiritual bondage or the power of sin. In Proverbs 5:22, it is written, "The iniquities of the wicked man entrap him; the cords of his sin entangle him." This imagery of being ensnared by chains or cords illustrates the binding nature of sin and its ability to hold individuals captive.

Conversely, chains can also represent divine authority and power. In Revelation 20:1-2, an angel descends from heaven "holding in his hand a great chain," which he uses to bind Satan for a thousand years. This chain signifies the authority of God over evil and His power to restrain the forces of darkness.

Symbol of Honor and Authority

In some instances, chains are depicted as symbols of honor and authority. In the account of Joseph, after interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, Joseph is elevated to a position of power, and "Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck" (Genesis 41:42). Here, the chain is a mark of distinction and authority bestowed upon Joseph.

Similarly, in Daniel 5:29, after interpreting the writing on the wall, Daniel is clothed in purple, and "a gold chain was placed around his neck," signifying his elevation to a position of honor in the Babylonian kingdom.

Spiritual Implications

The concept of chains in the Bible also extends to spiritual implications, particularly in the context of liberation and freedom. In Acts 12:6-7, when Peter is imprisoned, an angel of the Lord appears, and "the chains fell off Peter’s wrists," symbolizing divine intervention and the breaking of physical and spiritual bondage.

In summary, chains in the Bible serve as powerful symbols of both physical and spiritual realities. They represent captivity and restraint, but also authority, honor, and the potential for divine liberation. Through these varied uses, chains underscore the themes of bondage and freedom that are central to the biblical narrative.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Chain
Chains were used,

As badges of office;

For ornament;

For confining prisoners.

the gold chain placed about Joseph's neck, (Genesis 41:42) and that promised to Daniel, (Daniel 5:7) are instances of the first use.
