Why<MH4100> do you test<MH5254> the LORD<MH3068>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But the people<MH5971a> were<MH6770> thirsty<MH6770> for water<MH4325> there<MH8033>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>they grumbled<MH3885b> against<MH5921> Moses<MH4872> and said<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> is it that you have you brought<MH5927> us up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>, to kill<MH4191> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>us and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>our children<MH1121> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>our livestock<MH4735> with thirst<MH6772>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> cried<MH6817> out<MH6817> to the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, “What<MH4100> am I to do<MH6213a> with this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>? A little<MH4592> more<MH5750> and they will stone<MH5619> me!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, “Pass<MH5674a> before<MH6440> the people<MH5971a> and take<MH3947> with you some<MH4480> of the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478>; and take<MH3947> in your hand<MH3027> your staff<MH4294> with which<MH834> you struck<MH5221> the Nile<MH2975>, and go<MH1980>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, I will stand<MH5975> before<MH6440> you there<MH8033> on the rock<MH6697> at Horeb<MH2722>; and you shall strike<MH5221> the rock<MH6697>, and water<MH4325> will come<MH3318> out<MH3318> of it, so that the people<MH5971a> may drink<MH8354>.” And Moses<MH4872> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651> in the sight<MH5869> of the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then he named<MH7121, 8034> the place<MH4725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Massah<MH4532> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Meribah<MH4809> because<MH5921> of the quarrel<MH7379> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and because<MH5921> they tested<MH5254> the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, “Is the LORD<MH3068> among<MH7130> us, or<MH518> not?” <p class="hdg">Miraculous Battle against Amalek</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Amalek<MH6002> came<MH935> and fought<MH3898a> against<MH5973> Israel<MH3478> at Rephidim<MH7508>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Choose<MH977> men<MH376> for us and go<MH3318> out<MH3318>, fight<MH3898a> against Amalek<MH6002>. Tomorrow<MH4279> I will station<MH5324> myself on the top<MH7218> of the hill<MH1389> with the staff<MH4294> of God<MH430> in my hand<MH3027>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Joshua<MH3091> did<MH6213a> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> Moses<MH4872> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>told<MH559> him, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>and fought<MH3898a> against Amalek<MH6002>; and Moses<MH4872>, Aaron<MH175>, and Hur<MH2354> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the top<MH7218> of the hill<MH1389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3512c> Moses<MH4872> held<MH7311> his hand<MH3027> up<MH7311>, that Israel<MH3478> prevailed<MH1396>; but when<MH3512c> he let<MH5117> his hand<MH3027> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>down<MH5117>, Amalek<MH6002> prevailed<MH1396>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Moses’ hands<MH3027> were heavy<MH3515>. So they took<MH3947> a stone<MH68> and put<MH7760> it under<MH8478> him, and he sat<MH3427> on it; and Aaron<MH175> and Hur<MH2354> supported<MH8551> his hands<MH3027>, one<MH259> on one<MH2088> side<MH2088> and one<MH259> on the other<MH2088>.
