We also have a social worker, dietitian, genetic counselor, and a communication specialist. She is director of the ALS Center at UCSF Medical Center. She is particularly interested in research involving electrophysiological and genetic predictors in ALS. Her patients have the opportunity to participate in research projects or clinical trials of new treatments. She also is interested in the overlap of ALS and frontotemporal dementia, a related disease involving degeneration of the nervous system. Cathy earned her bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Arizona. She earned her medical degree and a doctorate in neurosciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. At UCSF, she served as chief resident in neurology and completed a fellowship in electromyography and neuromuscular disorders. She is also very involved with the The ALS Association Golden West Chapter and the California ALS Research Network.</p> <p><strong><img alt="" height="224" src="/sites/g/files/tkssra3426/f/wysiwyg/LR.jpeg" style="float:left" width="150" />Laura Rosow, MD<br /> Neurologist, Associate Director<br /> (<a href="https://profiles.ucsf.edu/laura.rosow" target="_blank">ucsf profile</a>)</strong></p> <p>Dr. Laura Rosow is a neurologist who cares for patients with a variety of neurological disorders, including neuropathy; muscle diseases related to the nervous system; neuromuscular junction disorders, such as myasthenia gravis; and diseases of the spine and nerve roots. Sampognaro is a neurologist who specializes in caring for patients with neuromuscular disorders, including myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease). In his research, Sampognaro investigates how ALS develops at the molecular level. Paul earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
