And responding He says to him, <FR>Thou sayest it.<Fr> <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And the chief priests were accusing Him of many things. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Pilate again asked Him, saying, Do you not answer? behold, how many things they witness against you. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And Jesus responded nothing at all; so that Pilate marveled.<p> <A name="7"></a><p class="hdg">The Crowd Chooses Barabbas<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#15">Matthew 27:15–23</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#13">Luke 23:13–25</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But during the feast he was accustomed to release unto them one prisoner, whom they asked, <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And there was one called Barabbas, having been bound along with the insurrectionists, who had committed murder during the insurrection. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And the multitude crying out began to ask, as he was always accustomed to do unto them. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Pilate responded to them, saying, Do you wish that I may release unto you the King of the Jews? <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him on account of envy. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the chief priests persuaded the multitude that he should rather release unto them Barabbas.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">Pilate Delivers Up Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#24">Matthew 27:24–26</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Pilate responding again said to them, Then what do you wish that I shall do unto Him whom you call the King of the Jews. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they again cried out, Crucify Him. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Pilate said to them, For what evil hath He done? And they cried out uproariously, Crucify Him. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And Pilate, wishing to do the multitude a favor, released unto them Barabbas. And having scourged Jesus, he delivered Him up that He should be crucified.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Soldiers Mock Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#27">Matthew 27:27–31</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#63">Luke 22:63–65</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm">John 19:1–15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And the soldiers led Him into the court, which is the judgment hall; and call around Him the whole band. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they put on Him a purple robe, and having plaited a thorny crown, put it on Him. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And they began to mock Him, Hail, King of the Jews! <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And they continued to strike His head with a reed, and spit on Him, and putting down their knees worshiped Him. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And when they mocked Him, they divested Him of the purple robe, and put on Him His own raiment: and lead Him away in order that they may crucify Him.<p> <A name="22"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32–44</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#26">Luke 23:26–43</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#16">John 19:16–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And they compel a certain Simon, a Cyrenean, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he must take His cross.<p> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And they lead Him to Golgotha, a place which is interpreted, The place of a skull. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And they gave Him myrrhed wine to drink: and He did not take it. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And they crucify Him, and divide His garments, casting the lot upon them, what each one may take. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And the superscription of His accusation was written over Him, THE KING OF THE JEWS.<p> <A name=""></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And they crucify two thieves along with Him; the one on His right, and one on His left. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-27.htm"><b>28</b></a></span> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-27.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And passing by they continued to blaspheme Him, wagging their heads, and saying, Aha, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>save thyself, and come down from the cross. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Likewise also the chief priests mocking to one another with the scribes, continued to say, He saved others; He is not able to save Himself. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Let Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, in order that we may see and believe. And those being crucified along with Him were reproaching Him.<p> <A name="34"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#45">Matthew 27:45–56</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#44">Luke 23:44–49</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#28">John 19:28–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And it being the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, <FR><i>Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?</i><Fr> which is interpreted, <FR>My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And certain ones of those standing by said, Behold, He is calling Elijah. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And one running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and reaching it forth on a reed, gave Him drink, saying, Let Him alone, let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And Jesus, sending forth a loud voice, expired. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from top even to the bottom. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And the centurion standing by in front of Him, seeing that He thus expired, said; Surely this man was the Son of God.<p> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And there were women looking on from a distance: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and Joses, and Salome; <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>who when He was in Galilee, were accustomed both to follow Him, and minister unto Him. And many other women who came up to Jerusalem along with Him.<p> <A name="43"></a><p class="hdg">The Burial of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#57">Matthew 27:57–61</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#50">Luke 23:50–56</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#38">John 19:38–42</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And it already being evening, since it was the Preparation, which is the day before the Sabbath, <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Joseph, who is from Arimathea, an honorable councilor, who also himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; having taken courage came to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/15-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And Pilate was astonished if He had died already.
